SxvniiR, President. E. T. Lehmai-, Cashier, la a Century Old Tet Continue to UUllze His sturdy Hkull a Hatter ing Ituin-A Kevlew oi Ills I.lfa. It may bo nn open question, writes a' Willlamstown correspondent of the Bow-ton Globe, who Is tho best-known man in the vicinity, President Franklin Car-tar of Williams college or Abrarn Parsons, better known ivs "Abe the Bunter." Certain it Is that Abe Is known to thousands and that his fnmoi is fully earned.

It was no scratch hit or lucky bunt that (rave Abe a place In the niches of fume. The Lord was kind to Abe in giving him an unusually thick skull and a horn about an inch long on the frontal bone, but ho has developed tho talent given him nnd has made the most of his opportunities. Abe the Hunter is an exceedingly jolly old negro, who lives in the part of this town known lis White Oaks, and claims that he was 101 years old last 4th of July. The story of the old negro runs like fills: His first recollections were thoso of a pickaninny on a plantation in South Carolina. His master's name was Mclnstor.

There Abe lived until he was 14 years old, as he thinks. Up to tho time of his sale as a slave from tho auction bloek, together with his mothev and three sisters, his most vivid recollections are of trials of bunting with a young ram. The ram would take a position, lower his head, and with a burst of speed start for Abe, who Llways met tho rain half way, the two heads coming together with great force, but tho ram, a Alio tells it, was always beaten. Hy the sale Abe was separated from his relatives, and sold, as ho thinks, to Stephen Miller, of Clavcraek, N. Y.

Here he staid for five years, and then ran away and went to Sheffield, where lie worked fov James Curtis os a house servant. In running away from Miller he was pursued by dogs, and es-1 caped only after killing one. From Sheffield Aba went to Old Stoelc-bridgo, whero ho lived for a number of years, working for Gan. WUliums, the Carters, I'radloys, Drawers, Cro'sbysi Cashier Adams and Maj. Bun-ill, all of 'whom are now dead.

Long before the war ho located in Vi'illiamstown, whero he has worked for many people. Hoys, since ho came hero, have become gray-haired men. All tho pant years ho had continued bnnting, vtatil lie waa confident that hothing less than a blow from a triphammer or a pile-driver would break his skull. The first act, however, that brought him fame occurred many years ago. Abe was th'cn living over a blacksmith Shop on Water street.

In the night ho was awakened by an alarm of fire, and getting out on the street found that Harvey Cole's store waa on fire. The door was locked, the key was missing, and. at the suggestion of a Mr. Powers, Abe went at it head first, and after repeated attacks it yielded. This gave Abe great prestige a stock in trade, so to speak; but with the confidence thus acquired he passed on to greater It came about in this way: Abo and his wife's brother were at South Will liamstown one day and they found Farmer Blake having troublo with a two-year old bull that he wanted to kill.

The bull was in nn inclosuro and pawing the turf la great shape, and, by his almost human bellowing, asking for uomo ono to swing a red cloth in front of him, Abe offered to make tho bull lower his colors) but took a biff drink of cider brandy before he began the net. Ho then entered tho Inclosure against the earnest protestations of Farmer Blake, Who asked Abo among other thing.1: "Are you a dashed fool enough to go in there with that wild bull throwing dirt, with nothing to kill him with?" It was apother case of David and Goliath. Tho big bull and Abo both bunted, and while Abo was shaken badly the bull was stunned so that his throat was cut forthwith. Abe does hot say so, but doubtless tho cider brandy wan called upon to assii.t. in tho cole ''ration that followed.

Then the students tempted Abo to show hii prowess to them. He was blindfolded arid something placed in a bag. Then the bandage was removed and ho was told that if lio could break the contents of the bujj by bunting his head agiunst it a valuable present would bo given him. Tho contents of the bag proved to be a big cheese, nnd Abe had no difficulty in oinashing it. Do was then blindfolded again, and it was nss-nned Unit another cheese had beea pl teed in the.

hug, but instead a bitf grindstone, an inoli and a half in thickness, waa inihstituted. The first bunt failed to shatter It, but Abe, rwalidug that Lis vcputuiion whs at titakc, went ut it agnin and broke it Into four pieces "wid my ninrrer-head." For this act he was given five dollars in money, two big cheeses, two pounds of tobacco nnd assurances from the college boys that if he as sick as a result of the grindstone act ho should be well cured for, but ho as able to work as usual the following duy and experienced no trouble whatever from the bunting. And so for many years Abe has been a faturc-a bunting so to speak with many of tho college boys in the Williarhstown firmament, ne has given them hits of fun, nnd they iu turn have chhivied In giv.pmtVsiy f'rr old nvin's oomfoH, and support, Invocation Rev. For nearly eighty years, says an English papcf, the house of commons lias been accustomed to vote ten pounds sterling a year to a person who appears In tho estimates as the "Daughter of a Toulonose Emigrant." What her name Is and why her father's emigration established a claim on tho Itrilish taxpayer aw questions frequently nnlcecl ia the house of commons, but never answered. The general, vague Impress-fiion is that the unknown father of this anonymous emigrated ot the timn that Napoleon was a captain in the French artillery nnd began to ells-tlnffuish himself ot Toulon, and that is nearly one hundred years ago. The treasury recently discovered that tho lady is dead Riid this year, for the first tlmo within the memory of living man, this sum of ten pounds will not ba asked for in corrirruUeo of supply.
