The Only Distinctly Populist Daily of a Metropolitan Character West of the Mississipi, Arkansas, A Suetch of The Hills. Pemuina, Baxter County, March 20, 1895. Editor Kansas As my friendH and nolirhbors of Crawford county requested I should wnto thorn ray Views of the hills of the south, I will sond you a sketch, and if you sea fit to publish it, do so. I loft Pittiburg Noy. 28, 1891, and sailed for the hills, or the land of Big Rod Atmles as it is called by some.

I traveled through Jasoer, Nowlon, Barry, Stono, Taney and Ozark, Counties, in and then in Baxter County, around Carrvoll, Borry, County, There Is sorao good country, with some government land. All tho government land that Is good is taken up. My travel from there to my presont location was over hills and rocks, some places bo sidling I bad to swing on the up hill side of the wagon to keep from turning over. Baxter County is rough and rocky with plenty of good water, Umber and range for stock. The people here are clever and poor, They live as they did fifty years ago, lotr cabins, chinked with small poles and supplied with rock or stick and mud chimneys covered with boards split from logs, and poles for ratters, and puncheon floor with the door hung on wooden nine out of every ton have no windows.

The furniture consists of borne made chairs, table, bed-steads and a box for a cupboard all made of poles and boards split out of logs, with an old fashioned oven and lid for stoye, Their occupation is raising a little corn for bread, find tobacco, cotton and hogs. spin and weave their own yarn and cloth and live on corn bread, bacon and sasafrass tea. Thev dont even raise any potatoes to eat, There are men here forty and fifty years old that never were out of the county. They soem to know there are other states out side of and that Cleveland is president, and that there ip no party as good as the Democratic and Republican party. One of the lending merchants of Baxter said he was 43 years old and never heard of a 16 penny nail, and never knew there was any nails made larger than a 30, Another one in tho County Seat never knew there waa any such thing as tea dust or sif tings, but for all of that there is a chance for a man to make a living here if he can put up with gouging amongst the rocks and stumps, with a ono horse plow and a bull toustuo for a cultivator, Ihey hardly know what money is here.

They trade with each other for what they want. Anything from a pocket knife to a horse is a legal tender here. A man can get a claim that is improved from the squatters from $50 to $300. As I said before the people are poor.like myself, 1 haye been here four months and hayo been all over the country and have only been able to get two days work and you may know it went pretty hard to walk four miles and maul rails ten long hours for only 50 cents in trade, as that is the wages here, but I am here too poor to even walk out, Now Dear Editor, if my friends would chip in and SUBSRIPTION RATES.
