Sam Conover, who was last week sentenced by Judge Pickler to go "over the road" to the penitentiary for a period not to exceed five years for the theft of some alfalfa seed, this morning came near to going "over the road" in a way in which there would have been no return. The prisoners at the county jail were awakened earlier than usual today, as it was desired to take Mr. Conover to Lansing, but when breakfast was offered to Mr. Conover he declined, remarking that he would't need any breakfast.

A short time later the sheriff and his deputy received a hasty summons to "come quick" as Cor over was about to die. Dr. D. S. O'Brien was called in a hurry and found that Mr.

Conover was in a very bad fix and near to death from the effects of something he had taken internally, presumably with suicidal intent, and it was only by the hardest of work that he was pulled through alive. The officers were at a loss to understand where Mr. Conover had obtained any poison until upon questioning the man's wife it was found that she had last week given him a sma I amount of laudanum, as he was complaining of having a bad toothache. It is presumed that it was this laudanum that he drank. Although Mr.

Conover is very sick, he is out of danger and will probably be able to take his sad and to be regretted journey to Lansing in a few days.
