The demon of contrariness had not yet entered the mule's soul. But when Joe turned his face towards the west and the mule turned her innocent countenance in the same direction the trouble began. Claflin is an attractive place to even a mule. The animal in question after going about 100 yards stopped short.

First gently, then in sharp tones Mr. Harden urged her to get Finding verbal appeals were of no avail, he applied the more forcible argument of four-year-old club. One might have' thought that convincing lo gic would have had the desired effect Not much. The "swat" of the cltfb re' sounded on the mule's ribs like'u Bush- ton ball player batting the "Sphere for a lome run, but the mule simply took it out in batting her eye. Then Mr.

Har den led her a few paces towards the western horizon. That did not suit the mule. She turned around and despite her driver's vigorous protests gracefully ambled into town again. This horse play we should haw said mule play continued with pleasing variations for some time and drew quite a crowd, some of the sportively inclined spectaters oifering odds on the- mule The contest was long and stubborn, so was the mule, and her feminine pertina city came out on top. Mr.

Harden was compelled to drive home and chan ani mules. Thus, even in this enlightened age does Lite lower creation occasionly assert its power to overthrow the mastership of man. Attention. N. E. R. Moses. Great Bend, Kans.

A pleasant surprise was tendered tha 'Modern Woodmen of America at Claflin Friday evening. The wives and daughters of the members swooped down on the lodge about nine o'clock. Their "ammunition" consisted of ice cream and cake aud the boys unconditionally surrendered to the fair sex. A highly sociable time was had. The editor was sent for, but with our proverbial ill-luck we could not be found.

Mrs. Ryan and Miss Bailey, representing a committee of "the ladies, called at the Leader office the morning after, however, and ten-ered the force a toothsome supply of cake which Satan in Ghief and his demons enjoyed hugely, and can scarce find fitting words to return thanks. God bless the ladies. We notice Brother Townsley, of the Great Bend News and lYibune, copies our little effusion anent the "chigg'6'r" and credits it to "Exchange." If there is one rule of this office that is observed to the letter it is never to copy anything without giving it proper credit, and we naturally take exception to having others break it, far as it effects us. If an item is worthy of being reprinted, it is also worthy 'of being credited and properly credited.

The Christian Endeavor people request us to announce that all members should remain at the church after the services next Sunday, as a meeting of hat society will be held to elect delegates to at tend the district convention to take place at Great Bend next wtek. There will also be a consecration mooting next Tuesday evening at which a full attendance is desired. For all the news take the Leaves; Whew! Monday V'as a sizzler. Everybody is threshing. A combination of hot weather, moisture, fall plowing and threshing seems to have kept the farmers 'away from; town the past, week and business of all kinds has been remarkably quiet. 8:15, Closing Address, by Rev. Nathan lirown, blei'hng, lvau-. Notice to Banner Subscribers. As the Leader has taken the Banner subscription list, and as lips price of the Leader is ll.SO per year, and that of the Banner was we "have decided to make the following, arrangement, which we trust will be satisfactory to Banner patrons. To all "subscribers who are paid in advance to the Banner, the Leader will be sent Until their time expires without extra charge.

To those who are in arrears with that paper, but who pay up a year in advance the Leader will be sent at the rate of $1.00 until the advance time expires. Those in arrears to the Banner, who do not pay iu advance by August.1, their arrearages to that date will be reckoned at the rate of $1.00 per annum, and at per annum thereafter. As an illustration, if yoA'ir subscrip tion to the Banner is paid to. say Feb- ruar'y 1, 1894, by paying, us 1.00 before August 1, you will be credited on our books till February 1, 189.1. But if you should, let your arrears to the Banuer run on, the rate after Augi'tit 1 will be $1.50 a year.

Our clubbing rates will be found in Another column, and will be found of great advantage to those who wish to xiomhine their home paper with a met ropolitan daily or weekly publication. Concerning a Mule. The Saying that you can leaxl a horse to water but you can't make him drink Is a very true aphorism. But the case or a mule is more serious, xon can hitch a mule up to a cart but that is no guarantee that you can make him go in a direction contrary to said mule' wishes. A mule looks as innocent Mary's little lamb, bu ou occasions can be "ornerier" than the multiplied cus-sedness of a thousand cbiggers.

This is a rule which has no exceptions. Show us an exception and we will show you a dead mule. Joe Harden south-east, of town owns a mule. It is a lady mule. If nnytJiing a lady mule is meaner than a mule of the mab persuasion.
