At one time last week it was thought tho end had come, but Jiypcrdomic injections of brandy rallied the patient, since which time his condition has been slightly improved. Planning to Marry. Below we append the kind of letters the governor of Kansas occasionly receives, and the sensible answer that he indites thereto. "Givernor Martin's recent noble work in materially aiding the settlement of the strike of the railroad men has won for him widespread popularity, as is seen from the following request for aid from a young lady in the east. His answer is given below: Hon.

John A. Martin, Governor of Kan. A'ind Sir: Please excuse the seeming impertinence of this letter. I am a poor girl. I am engaged to a young manand we wish to get married, and go west ami take up a claim, but we have not money enough.

Will you please send me $o0 or flOOP Please send it and you will make two persons very, very happy. Please do send mo some money. It would be a God scud to us. Yours truly, 25, 1885. THE GOVERNOR'S HEl'LY.

Dear am: I acknoledge the receipt of your very curious letter of the 25th. inst. The State of Kansas is not remarkably generous to its oflicers, and it does not afford salaries that would justify them in making such donations as, you request. I hope the young man to whom you are engaged is energetic, industrious and intelligent. If he is, or $100 will not be a serious obstacle in the way of your marriage, and a good 4wife will materially assist him in conquering a respectable place in the world.

Thousands of men who are now prosperous and prominent began their married life with hardly a dollar in their pocketd. What has been Uoue. may bo done. If your intended husband is worthy of a good wile, he can go west and take a claim and soon earn money enough to furnish a home for you. Yours, very respectfully, John A.

Jaktin, Governor. March 28. 1835. KANSAS' BOAIID OF AGRICULTURE. Wo have received the fourth annual re port of the state board of agriculture of Kansas.

It is an elegantly printed vol ume of over 700 pages, containing an immense amount of valuable informa tion of a descriptive and statistical char acter ot every county in the stale, accompanied by colored sectional maps of each county, A complete summary of the progress and development of the state since its organization is given, be-sids the reports for tho year 1883 and 1884. The period covered by these years has been one of gieat prosperity in all branches of industry in Kansas. The population du'ing the year increase cd there were 2,000,000 addition. al acres put under cultivation; the numbers of the various kinds of live stock have increased largely during the same time, the interest keeping abreast with the advancement made in agriculture. By consulting the pages of this exhaus tive report anyone will be convinced that tho state of Kansas hascvery reas-i to be proud of her record The facts presented fully warrant the state in issuing such a complete report.

Kansas is a great state, and it owes its prosperity in a great measure to the liberal expenditure of money in judicious advertising by which it has attracted the attention of home-seekers from all over the world Had Nebraska followed a similar course 8he would to-day have been as great a state as Kansas. Tho thoroughness with which tho Kansas state board of agriculture has done its work is worthy of following even at this late day by the Nebraska board. In addition to biennial reports the Kansas board issues annual pamphlets giving information eon-concerning and capabilities of tho slat i to those seeking homes in the west, and it also publishes quarterly crop reports, and monthly crop re-ports during the six mouths begining with April. During the past two years the board has published 250.000 copies of reports of all kinds, All this work is done under the supervision of William Sims, secretary of th board who is evidently an expert at the business. If Nebraska could secure the services of such a man to advertise her resources, she would indeed be fortunate, and if our board would study the methods of he Kansas board it could learn a great ileal.

At present the Nebraska board virtually Amounts to not hing. Its principal business is attending to tho state fair and figuring out how to wake both night Homo thief stole a load of wheat from J. F. O'Donnell who lives six miles northeast ot "Kirwin, borrowing 0' Don- noil's team to do the haulingwith. Tho team was found in tho stable next morn ing in a worn condition.

Kir win Independent From the Phillipsburg Times, we learn that lightning came near causing a con flagration at Phillipsburg last wednes- iay night. A hay stack, near a-'barn, was struck at the hour of midnight, and only prompt action upon the part of the citizens, prevented a serious conflagration.
