The latter formerly lived here and was around renewing old acquaintances. Mr. Alma Byers is here visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Veech Byers.

He has disposed of his newspaper it Ironton, and is going to Panama. (Received too late last week.) Thanksgiving is almost here, and we hope all who can will be present -et our Thanksgiving supper entertainment given by the Devon school. The proceeds will be invested in a new bell for the school house. The Downer family were agreeably surprised last Saturday by the arrive of Roy Downer from the west, who has not visited his home for some time. He is a son of the late J.

B. Downer who died last August, "and Roy did not know of his father's death until he reached home, he be- ing out on the plains with a band of some five thousand sheep the greater part of the summer and therefore the dispatch and letters sent him failed to reach their destination. Little Gladys Gardner is very sick with typhoid fever. Mrs. D.

F. Hall tells" us that her son, Phil Taylor, who lives in Portland, and who has many friends here, met with quite a painful but we hope not serious accident a short time ago He was carrying a heavy piece of lumber which had a spike nail driven through it and in some way he dropped the lumber on his foot, running the nail through it. The wound is healing nJcely, but has been very sore. James Welker made a business trip to Mapleton last Wednesday. Mrs.

John Downer left for Gainesville, Texas, last Sunday, where she expects to spend the winter. Newt Johnson intends to move on the Hendrix ace eomc time soon. Burt Jones has lots of bad mck. His. horse fell on his new buggy Sunday, breaking the tongue of the buggy and several places in the harness.

Miss Rose the county superintendent of schools, was in our neighborhood a short time ago, and visited with Mrs B. Wiltse. Rev. Orchard and wife and daughters came out from Fort Scott to spend the day at the Centerville farm, Saturday. Mr.

and -Mrs. Jordan are the par-ents of a new baby boy. -Mother and child are nicely. Protracted meeting is still in progress -at Crescent. Dunkerton is the possessor of a fine' new rubber tired road wagon-but is too much in love with it to get much good out of it.

Clyde Downer made a trip over from Joplin this week. Little Dorothy Huston is. quite sick with typhoid fever. Mrs. Clayton, of Walkertown, lost a fine horse while visiting her W.

A. Clayton, of Devon, last week. Miss Lottie Fox made a business trip through our neighborhood Saturday. She is working to win the piano in -the contest we hope she will be successful, for; she is a fine little lady and well deserves it. Mr.

Cochran, received a dispatch this morning telling him that his sister is dead. She has been an Invalid for a long time and for the past few months has traveled In California and other western states hoping to recover her health, but. returned to her home in Burlington Junction, end died within a few days. Mrs. Jim Price is in a very serious condition.

Quite a number of our young people attended the band concert and oyster supper at Redfieid, Saturday night. Jess Robinson has sold his farm and purchased four houses and lots in lola. r. Robinson will move to Iola In the spring. Gus Rastettor, while husking 'corn the other day, caught held of a big snake which had crawled up the stalk and coiled around the ear of corn.
