Temperance Sentiment Growing. are now near the close of the last month of the year 1901, and the year itself will soon be reckoned among the past. What an eventful year What volumes of history it will take to record the scenes that have transpired And, to think of the thousands and tens of thousands in this land of ours who have gone down to their graves on account of this evil of intemperance And the hearts that have been wrung with anguish by a father, son or brother, who became addicted to the drink habit. Never has there been such uyear of suffering from thisr curse of- Never srrmany: homes made desolate. Never in all the history of our country has there been so many murders, suicides and crime committed as in the year just in This County.

There was a goodly attendance at the Rhuhama Baptist church last Sunday evening to hear H. G. Fraser's lecture, at the close of which a Temperance and Xaw Enforcement Union' was formed. The officers elected were W. Blackstone, President.

C. P. Crouch, Vice President. Mrs. G.

H. Perkins, Secretary. C. N. Adams, Treasurer.

At Homevyood, on Monday evening there was a full house, notwithstanding there were other meetings which called for the attendance of some who would have been glad to be present. Here also a Union was formed, with the following officers L. Bliekenstaff, President. J. A.

Funk, Vice President. S. Iv. Garnett, Secretary. G.

B. Daily, Treasurer. Franklin county is comparatively free from joints, and the good people are determined to keep it so. There has not been a place yet visited by Mr. Fraser where the people have not willingly organized for the purpose of holding Temnpr.

Do they know that every one of them may be called on to prove that the applicant is a person of good moral character; that he does not use in-toxicating liquors, and that he can be entrusted with the responsibility of selling this poison? And how many of them know the value of his fixtures and drug stock Plow many would go on (he stand and wear th a oc Co wd ery a a 1 way sold whisky within the meaning of the law Not a mother's son of them would dare do it.

The fact of the matter is, Cowdery must be shut off. He's had things too much his own way in this town for the past twenty years. He will make a desperate fight for this permit, and the temperance people of Ottawa should do everything in their power to prevent this place from dispensing the rottenest kind of whisky that ever 'went down a man's throat. By so doing you will wipe out one of worst 'temptations to the young men in Ottawa. The churches of Ottawa gave their Sunday school children a fine treat Tuesday night.

Excellent programs were given. This week we present to the public gaze another applicant for a whisky license and list of his backers, who say he is, a fit person to handle the stuff that has downed many a young man in this community. That these petitioners of Doc Cowdery are mistaken will be proved to them a good deal stronger than were the "Ninety" in the case of the "Live Druggist." This man has been violating the prohibitory law of Kansas ever since he went into the business of a druggist. The; Guardian knows it, a great many of our citizens know it, the Probate Judge knows it, and Doc himself knows it. That he.will be granted a permit, no one doubts.

liquor power. A mere glance at the record of the past year on this one phase is enough to appal one. Yet, "thank God, the picture is not all dark. There are some gleams of hope. And as the panorama passes before us, the promise, especially in Kansas, seems to grow brighter.

The hosts of Temperance are preparing for the greatest, battle of the ages. We feel our heart swelling with hope that the time is fast coming when Kansas will be free from the joint and the whisky drug store. The tokens of this happy change are to be seen rignt here in Ottawa, and we all should feel encouraged. Be thankful for these hopeful signs, and let us push on in this conflict until the last joint is crushed out of existence. The work here in Ottawa is only just begun.

Don't let us go to sleep at this time. Christian reader, Temperance friends, be true do your whole duty, and stand up for your home against this worst of all evilsthe Liquor traffic, and those who deal out the accursed stuff. When you do do this, then yours will be a Happy New Year indeed. jT ance meetings and seeing to it that the law is enforced. The people of this county are determinedly oyposed to having permits granted to Drug Joints, arid the man who grants them will be snowed under should he ask for a second term of office.

No party can afford to nominate whisky men in Franklin county. Old Santa, although a little late, was good to the editor and his home. He just tumbled two big bundles of good things in the front door without leaving his card or saying "Howdy We'll have a 1 feast for a week or two. Thanks. But it will be against the wishes of a majority of the citizens of Ottawa and Franklin county.

There will be a strong opposition presented to the granting of this permit. In case the Judge refuses to admit testimony, cs he has done in the past, other action will be taken..
