The bridge across the Arkansas river at this point is now completed. Too much gambling going on in $1,000 will buy 800 acres of choice land suitable for farming or range, river front, five miles from Great Bend. Inquire at this office. The German Methodists held a Camp meeting at Power's Grove during the past week. The attendance was good. Wheat or rye, 200 acres three miles from- Great Bend, south side of the river, to be let on shares, inquire at Buckland's land ollice.

Miss Gile9 gave a concert in Ellinwood, last Thursday evening. Miss Giles was assisted, we learn, by Mrs. Baldwin, Misses Lillie and Huldah Neumiestcr of this city and Mr. Wordan of Newton. The concert was well attended and as may be judged, was a most satisfactory entertainment.

Just as we go to press we learn that the horses stolen near this place by thieves last Saturday night, were recovered near Earned lost Monday. The thieves proved to be escaped convicts from Leavenworth Penitentiary who after abandoning the horses stolen here, stole others near Garfield and took southward toward the Indian Territory. The thieves at last accounts had not been captured. Mr. John Lightbody resigned the trcasuryship of this school district last Saturday.

The vacancy caused by his resignation was filled by appointment, the Superintendent of public instruction, Prof. C. C. Wolfe, exercising the power by appointing to the position, Mr. J.

Clark No better selection could have been made. It is creditable alike to the district and to the Superintendent. The Texas cattle fever is raging among stock at Dodge City. Mr. Henry Booth of Larned informs us that last Sunday there were twenty-two dead cattle, lying unbur-ied, on the government reservation at the former point.

The fatal "cases occur in the herds of native cattle. Texas cattle bring the disease to this country but do not suffer much from the ailment themselves. If the disease is permitted to spread from Dodge, the damage to stock growers may prove to be considerable. Our advice to farmers and others interested in stock, is to be careful and guarded. -Mr. McCulloiigh's child has 'been quite ill the past few days. Mrs. O. Neumeister, was visiting friends at Ell'mwood last Thursday.

The city was crowded with people from the out lying districts last Saturday. F. G. W. Travis of Kansas City, was registered at the Last Tuesday.

John F. Woods of the Ness City Times, favored the Times with a call last Tuesday. Mrs Patterson, weare informed has been quite ill during the past few days. Dr. Shaw is in attendance.

John Ciiinmius, of Cheyenne bottom has been quite sick the past veek. Dr. McConnick in attend-Uncd Frank Whitney's two year old child was very sicK; last Monday, we are informed. Dr. Shaw in attendance.

Capt. Buckland and Mr. A. C. Scherraerhorn were at Lamed last Monday, attending to som'j land matters there Judge Powers and son George, contemplate establishing a store in the town of Stafford, Stafford county at an early day.

W. II. Foster, with M. II. Dickinson, Kansas City, was in Great Uend, last week and this, organizing his "cavalry." Mr.

Low's two children have been quite sick with typhoid fever the past few days. Dr. McConnick has charge of their cases. For a boquet of choice Uovvers. left at our office, during onr absence, last Saturday, the gift of Miss Ann Freeman, we return thanks.

The "stupendous avoirdupois" of Dudley Rhoades of the Commercial House, Ellinwood, was seen moving about on our streets last Monday. A gratifying feature about the movements of our farmers, is that they all have mouey. Hardly a farmer is seen but what lias more or less money about his person. Joseph Troillet has placed in position a substantial new awning in front of his place of business near the post-office. Joe is always up to the latest racket.

Col. Dave. Thompson, the poetically inclined proprietor of the "morgue" returned from Wichita last week. The colonel speaks in glowing terms of the south central metropolis. F.

Of coarse the proper encouragement must be giveir by our people. Gov. Cumback bears the reputation of being a fine orator and of delivering the best prepared and most interesting lecture, now being delivered. Our people have the taste to appreciate, and the inclination to to a. good lecture.

John has resided in this city for many years, and proved a very good citizen. We are sorry to loose him from amongst us. Brother Iloisington donned, in addition to his new suit, a clean choker; last Monday, and also had some polish put on his boots. He looked for all the world, dressed as he was, like a metropolitan dude. Miss Bertie Hall, formerly of this city but now of Las Vegas, N.

M. is stoppiog in this city at present, visiting with her aunt, Mrs. E. W. Moses.

Miss Hall has just returned from an eastern visit, and makes it convenient to tarry here a few weeks on her return home. We attended the Congregational Church services last sabbath, and listened to an able and entertaining sermon, delivered by Rev. I.R. Prior. We found the church building, since it was recently repaired, in an inviting condition, and the largest and best finished and furnished church structure in this city.

A child of Mr. Rackey, who resides ten miles north west of the city, was pretty severly injured by falling down a flight of stairs in its father's residence about a week ago. Dr. Bain was called in to the ease and rendered skilful services, and the child bids fair to recover fully from the injury. A new wind engine was erected this week, just north of Benedict's stable.

This town is getting in such a shape, on the wind mill business, as to present special inducements for some new Sancho Panzato strike out on a wind mill No less than two dozen mammoth wind engines a re now in operation in this city. A communication from Olmitz dated August 6th did not reach us until August the 20th. The eon-tents, of course, would at this late date be of.no use to our readers. We solicit correspondence from the writer of this communication, inasmuch as he confines himself to the giving of facts and exercises good sense by giving brief items, and eschewing nonsense. Mr Ilorine, residing in the north part of this count', is having some sickness in his family.

Sickness seems to be prevalent throughout the county at present. Diseases are mostly of a billious character, and arise from the fact that there is much malaria in the atmosphere results of the decomposition of vegetable matter. Be careful and ue preventives in time. A pleasant time was enjoyed by a number of our folks, last Thursday evening in Ellinwood. Dane-was indulged in, in which the Misses Blanche, Eifie and Lyda Norton, Cora Tryon, Addie Birdsall and LenaSchermerhorn, and also Messrs Birdsall, Newman, Durkan and Kelly, participated.

Miss Ada Whitcomb, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Whitcomb of this city was pleasantly surprised by a party of young folks on Friday evening the 17th inst.

it being upon the occasion of her 14th birthday. It never occured to the young lady that she would be made the subject of such gratifying consideration until she was confronted by the mirthful lasses and youths that had gathered at the front entrance of the house on the evening in question, and clamored for admittance. Miss Ada was quite provoked at her ma and pa for having- kept from her the knowledge of any arrangement in conrrection with the party, but soon rallied her usual good spirits and prepared, with the assistance of her mother, to have a jolly good time with her schoolmates and friends. The house was thrown open, plays and amusement indulged in, and the delicacies of the season served in a bountiful manner. The party consisted of the following named persons The Mhsia Florence Poole, Clara Negbaur, Florence Townsley, Madge Smith, Jennie Turner, Katie Day, Laura Patterson, Emma Bell, Dem-mie Rash, Grace Rankin, Hattie Culver, and Misters Charlie Snyder, George Uri Willie Evans, Chan Townsley, Arthur Turner, Willie Clumberlin, John Goit, and George Kempf.
