THE KANSAS WORKMAN, 11 I7 Chanute Surprises Sister Cole. Thursday evening, May 9th, 1901, witnessed a pleasing and important social event in the history of Boardwell Lodge, No. 108, D. of of Chanute. The occasion being a surprise and reception given by the members of Boardwell lodge to Sister Cole to expres their gratification of recent election to the office of Grand Chief of Honor.

Early in the evening about forty members of the lodge assembled at the home of Brother and Sister Geo. H. Brown and marched to the home of Sister Cole in the south part of town. As a token of respect the members presented to Sister Cole an elegant silver bread tray. The presentation speech was made by Sister Mary A.

Brown in her usual happy manner, which was responded to by Sister Cole in a short but nleas- VV i 1 ing and impressive talk. The Chanute Citizen's Band accompanied the crowd and discoursed music tor the occasion. The event throughout was a verv Dleasant ona MRS. NEICE D. COLE, Chanute.

Grand Chief of Honor. and everybody present joined in wishing Sister Cole a most successful and pleasant administra tion ot the afiairs of the office to which she has been elected, and which pos'tion we are sure was most fittingly bestowed upon one mo3t competent LETTER FROM GRAND CHIEF. The Classified Assessment Plan will go into ef One month has winged its flight since my election and I fect for the Degree of Honor in Kansas on July have been very busy, and I trust you have been likewise. 1st. Ihe assessment for July, if one be neces sary, will be paid according to the rates of the Many encouraging reports have come in from different parts of the state. I expect within the next 35 days, or after July 1st, to have several new lodges instituted, also to have two good deputies in the field, and with our classified assessment plan, and $2,000 policies we are sure to grow. I earnestly request you paper, but it is best to make sure. And in a similar way they should be notified about the change in the law upon the subject of payment of dues.

The Degree of Honor met last Monday night and a good attendance was had. The lodge is increasing in membership very fast and for next meeting night which will be May 27 they have a arge number to be taken in as members. to labor to build up the beneficiary department in your own lodge, for without your help I cannot accomplish my aim. I spent three days at Abilene with Sister Gulick, and was greatly benefited by it. The many valuable instructions I received from her will be a great benefit to us all. I also visited the Grand Lodge of the jurisdiction of Mis souri, at Kansas City, and am happy to say I am more proud of our Kansas than before. I enjoyed their session very much.

They received me in a truly sisterly way, and paid mQ a great tribute of respect by inviting me to speak on two different occasions also, to act as Grand Usher at their Public installation, and I wa3 chosen as chairman of the Judges on team work. Our dear Sister Ennis, the Superior Chief, was present also, the Grand Chief of Ceremonies, of Nebraska, which made it all in all a very interesting affair. I returned home more enthusiastic than ever. Brothers and Sisters do not forget the eick. Visit them ften, carrying God's message in a boquet, doing acts of kindness, and speaking words of cheer.
