Old Settler's Pic-Nic. There will be an Old Settlers' pic nic in Gove City, on Saturday, September 10th Every body in Gove and adjoining counties cordially invited to come out and en joy themselves. Officers will bo elected and steps taken to organize a permanent association for the purpose of holding these reunions each year. Com. Call for Convention.

At a meeting of the Democratic Central Committee of Gove county held in Gove City, on Saturday, Aug. 6tb, it was decided to call a delegate couveution to meet in Gove City, on 8ATCRDAY, OCTOBER 8TH, 1887, at the hour of 1 o'clock, p. sharp, for the purpose of nominating one county clerk, one sheriff, one recorder of deeds, one treasurer, one surveyor, one coroner, and one county commissioner from the first district, and to transact such other business as may properly come before the convention The basis of Representation is one delegate from each precinct and one dele gate for each eight votes, or major fraction, cast for Thomas Moonlight governor. The different precincts are entitled to the following number ol delegates: Baker, Grainfield, Giintiell, Gove, Jerome, Lurrabce, Lewis, Payne 6. Total 37.

It is recommended that the primaries be held at the usual voting place in the diflereut precincts on Saturday, October 1st, at 3 p. S. S. Reynolds, Ch'in. R.

L. Chriswell, Sec. The Old Settlers' Meeting at Farnsworth. Yesterday morning by invitation of Willis Jones, we accepted a seat in his buggy and set out for the old settlers' meeting at Farnsworth. Aniving there at 11 a.

m. we found the grove already filled with crowds all carrying great baskets of chicken and other picnic eatables. The Dighton band was on the ground and discoursing splendid music. Four lemonade distilleries were dispensing cool drinks and sweet things, and were the cause of much jealous attention on the yart of numerous rustics, and the plat form erected on the cast side of the grounds suggested the light fantastic too later on. We had just completed a survey of the grounds, when our arm was grasped by our old friend, Joe Whiteuair, and his first words quieted nn anxiety wo had felt all tho morning "come to dinner." We come you bet.

Kinewell, son of the late partner of President Arthur, died suddenly in New York the other day, and the coroner's verdict was that his death resulted from congestive chills, superinduced by the excessive use of Tobacco in the form of cigarettes. Smokers take warning. E. M. Prindle, of Grainfield, passed through Jerome on the south-bound hack Thursday.

He was on his way to Lamed. i Mr. Prindle is a pioneer of this county and used to the Grainfield Cap Sheaf when it was young. The drouth that our Kansas croakers are complaining so much about is nothing to what is being experienced in the east crn states. Illinois has not bad a ruin for several weeks, and everything is dry ing up.

Stock is suffering in many places, and in some of the larger places the peo ole have to stint themsolves. Exteusive forest fires are raging in Michigan, Wis consin and Minnesota which can only be stopped by a htavy rain. All over the east, fences and crops along the railroads are being burnt, as the least spark from the engine will do the work, everything being so dry. When Kansas gets as bad, it is time to commence grumbling. R.

K. Farnsworth came into DUhton from Farnsworth, Monday. He had been terribly bruised up, having his cheek bone mashedinand broken in two places. A warrant was sworn out for Jacob Carroll and deputy sheriff E. R.

The facts as near as we have betn able to learn ase about as follows: A number of men had gathered in the store at Farnsworth and Mr, F. and Carroll passed some warm words Carroll attacked Farnsworth with the above result.

There had been an unfriendly feeling existing between the men for unc time, so we are told. Mr. Farnsworth is getting along all right, but if Carroll is caught it will be apt to go hard with him. Dighton Republican. Straws.

There are at least two hearts that aro glad since the safe arrival of that eight and one half pound girl at the home of A. E. Pritchard this waek. Miss Maggie Gibson has been very ill for the past two weeks at the home of lier brother two miles south of town, but she is rapidly recovering. The Restaurant Building in the second ward has been completed, but has not yet been oponed for business. We understand that business will be commenced in the near future.
