Our -Motto: Greatest Good to the Greatest Number of People." MILTOIfVALE, CLOUD COUNTY, KANSAS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 1886. WHOLE NO. 274. VOL. 5.

NO. II. election in Kansas than can be seen in THE MILTONVALE ENJOY AS YOU GO. Some people mean to have a good time when their bard work is done, nay at fifty. Others plan to enjoy thenar selves when ttieir children are grown up.

Oibers mean to tase their pleasure, in this life, when they get to be rich or when their business is built upon a'sure foundation, or when the farm is paid for, or the grind of some particular sorrow is over, past. These individuals might as well give up ever having a good time, The delight which so long waited and hoped for, too rarely comes. Disease, poverty, death, claim each its victims. The lives of those whom we love, or our own, go out and what is left? Then take your pleasure to-day while it is yet time. Things may not be in the best shape for that visit you nave been so long planning to your only sister.

It might be better if you could wait till the boy was at home front college to look after the place; but she is ready now. You are both growing You are cordially invited to call at our Store for an inspection of our new, complete and well selected stock of Dry Goods, Clothing, Boots, Shoes, Hats, Caps, Trunks, Valises, Millinery, Stationary. the Fifth district to-day tor Johp A. Anderson. The Capital is too good a republican paper to support every political job that may be set up by tncksers in the name of the party. Ed'b Hacaman of the Blade mentions the. names of the following gentlemen as new subscribers and peren-thetically insinuates that these same are of the leading republicans of Elk township.

Please read over carefully and laugh at this stupendous joke: VanDeMark, Kinch, Toot, David Coon, Dewey Buckner, Branford, Washington Dr Ransopher, Longton, A Lamb-sary, Rockefeller, Mahler ECatudal, H. J. Harris, A GrifSn, Bartlett, Palliser, Mc- Farlin, Butler, Dwellie, II Hederick1, Ilenn, A Bourk, McCandless, Thomison, Joe Reg-nier, W-A Berry, Morgan and Parker. The Record believes in Marion, in Kansas, in the United States, in the Republican party, in prohibition, in temperance in the Christian religion in churches, in Sunday education, in the honesty of most ratm and purity of most women. It believes that the world is growing better, and that the devil will ultimately get the grand bounce.

Along this line it DroDOses to light it out." The above is from the editor of the Marion Co. (Kansas) Record, and "hits the nail squarely on the head." This is quite different to the expressed thoughts of a good many people, who think it smart to ridicule religion. morality, and who swear the world is growing worse instead of better. Ed itor. An anxious Question anions the Wilson faction is whether tflny shall follow the paople into the Anderson enmp or be left almost alone to vote for 'he nominee of the organized swindle known 9 ihe Concordia convention.

Every day proves more strongly how deep is Iho disgust aqd now widespread the rebellion against the nomination. Men of nil parties are flocking to the Anderson standard. Manhattan Nation, alist. TnE supporters of Wilson claim that Andersou men are bolters, while the fact is the Concordia convention bolted the instructions of their constituents and nominated a Glick democrat. The Wilson men are the bolters.

They not only bolted their instructions, but they nominated a bolter, and now with bra zen aff rontery ask the party to stand by the bolting nominee of a bolting convention. Delphos Carrier. TnE Concordia Times is out for John A.Anderson in a manly way. This leaves the Blade the only Wilson paper in Cloud county. It stands now as follows: For Anderson, Mail, Herald, Jamestown Kansan, Sun, Concordia Critic, Empire, Miltonvale News Star, Concordia Democrat.

For Wilson, Concordia Blade. Will the Clifton Review note the above? Frank Wilson, of Clou county, came forward at the convention in Clay Center and stated that he was a delegate to the Concordia convention, and had been approached by three antl-Anderson men who tiied to induce him to return home. He was told afterward by one of these gentlemen that he was authorized to give bint $303 to leave. Hon. George Knapp, of Cloud county, said at the convention in Clay Center that it had been charged that this was a convention of republcans, democrats and soreheads, and asked that tho roll of delegates be called to see how many were republicans.

This was done and every delegate declared himself a republican. It might be well for A. P. Riddle, editor of the Minneapolis Messenger, to keep bis nosa out of the business of the Republicans ot the Fifth District. Perhaps his small soul is not satisfied with the "slice" ho has received from the party in this state.

His organ is for whisky and Wilson. Hon. A. 8. Wilson was in our city Thursday, and while walking down Sixth street he was accosted with "Say, Judgo, why arn't you at Clay Center taking in the mass convention?" His answer was, "you don't sopposo I wout to attend my own funeral, do your" Concordia Democrat.

It Is told In Washington that after a certain Senator, noted for his absent- mindedness, left that city on a short visit, this memorandum was found his room: "Those things take along: One pair socks, one shirt, two collars, oue pair culli, one wile." J. C. Clink. L. M.

Wilson, we want somH one to run a straight republican paper at thiH place, and we will guarantee him a generous suppoit. Maxy Republicans. Clyde, July IfiS'i. vow Concordia Blade. Yes, well why didn't Cromwell Well ington VanDeMarkand Frank Griffin their names to this call for a new republican paper ia Clyde? If the people wait for another republican newspaper in Clyde until VanDaMark or F.

A. Griffin starts one, wrra their own money, the Mail and Herald will have lived way along towards the good old of Methusalah, and still there will be no opposing republican newspaper. Bah! VanDeMarkand Griffin are disgruntled office-seekers, and to spite Anderson and loyal rspublicans, have sold out to Whiskey Wilson. Two torn cats on a back yam fence singins a love ditty to their Angelica at high noon midnight would amount to just as much politically as either of these soreheads. The following resolution was adopted at the Convention in Clay Center: "Vhebeas, Hon.

A. S. "Wilson informs us that the damned grangers don't know enough to pouud saud into a rat hole; and Whersas, The Hon. A. S.

Wilson is supposed to be a caudidaU for representative in congress for this district; therefore, RssalveJ, That while we may not knew enough for that elegant aad aesthetic performance, we will, nevertheless, on election day conviucu him that we do know cnongh to pound a rat into a sand hole. Hon. Chas. II. Smith, a leading re publican ol Washington county, addressed the convention, aud said Wilwn could not carry his own county, and that a majority ot the republicans of that county pronounced the Concordia con vention au outrage.

llr. Anderson is now tho rejju'ar nom- nee ot the republican party and will be elected. TheTopeka Capital speaks as fol lows of Hon. John. A.

Anderson: The candidate of the republican voters of the Fifth district is John A. Anderson, who has always voted the republican ticket, a man whose personal and official character is beyond reproach. In the convention he was swindled out of the nomination by political trickery. The republicans of the district refused to Acknowledge the nomination of Wilson because of his rotten record as a republican, and because fan was not thoir choice. They nominated John Anderson, and those who have been over the district state that there never was a more gcueial rising the people In any PHILIP yoTJisra-'s You will Hud the largest stock of FURNITURE in the city, old you had better go.

John drives around with the horse, "Jump in mother," he says, "it's a lovely day. You need the fresh air. Don't say: "I can't go, I.was intending to make doughnuts," or "my crimping pins are not out," or "my dress isn't changed." Put on your warm a veil around your hat, take a ride. If you don't take such things when you can get them, you are apt to be shy when you want them again. Don't say "I shall be glad when that child is grown up What quantities of trouble he makes!" No, enjoy his cunning ways revel in his affectionate hugs and kisses, they will not be so plenty by and by.

Enjoy his childhood. Tf Tirill rrr awaat- nnn nrhun it- la I gone forever. Enjoy the littles of every day. The great favors of fortune come but tc few, and those who have them tell us that the quiet homely joys, which are within the raach of us at, are infinitely tne bast. Then let us not cast them away, but treasure every sunbeam, and get all the light and warmth from it that the blessing holds.

rOVERS. There are a certain few in this good ly city of Miltonvale to whom scandal is a morsel more palatable than the dream inspiring goddess of the east, or the nectar of the gods. Be the person high or low, these vampires greedily seize eyery idle taio and magnify it into a U1UUUUI1U UL UlDdUlUI IvnUUUvijO, Be the action a simple courtesy of friondship, a simple meeting or an in nocent walk to these insatiable mon sters it is the semblance of the most guilty Iiasion. Each trifling act is sq magnified that the beginning of the story is lost in the dreadful enormity of the tale that reaches the public car. It is time to enter a protest against this sort of thing.

No man or woman is safe from having his or her name bandied back and forth, the common talk of scan jal-mongers to the sorrow and regret of their friends. It must bo stopped now and for all time. Tho truth will hurt none but the guilty parties, let the truth be told, and nothing but the truth. Let no man say, "I only told what Jones told me what Smith learned from Brown who had it from Black" and thus ad infinitum. "I know or do not know" should be the tale that is told; not, "I think it is so because I saw so and so walking with so and so or talking with so and so." It grows unhealthy and reflects upon a town's prosperity, for none but idlers find time to circulate idle tales.

A truth, much as it must be regretted by all, harms not so much as a lie circula ted by unknown scandal-mongers. There is but one remedy and we will advise Its application. A vigilance committee should be formed and each one who utters a scandal should be interviewed by it and taken before the proper authority and be made to swear to bis or her knowledge. By this means, and this only, will the truth be learned. And let the truth be found, injure whom it may.
