The Redfield baseball club took a few of their players to Falrmount Saturday and defeated the Falrmount boys In two games. Glenn Whiteside went to Fort Scott Tuesday. J. W. Miller the president of tho Bandera Flagstone company, was hero from New York City, Tuesday, looking after the interests of the company. Judd Martin has enlarged his section going this week.

Wes Johnson caught on of his fin gers between a large pair of hooks at Bandera and very painfully mashed it. He was unable to work the forepart of the week. D. F. Ralston was visiting his father here the first of the week.

Miss Bertha Caldwell went to Fort Scott Tuesday. As this is the last issue before our Piano contest closes, we had better get together and see that our girl is the one to get first premium. S. M. Kellogg and wife went to Fort Scott Monday. Miles Holt was down from Union- town, Tuesday, in the interest of the lolt-Bell telephone company. I.

N. Bollnger shipped hogs to Kan sas City Tuesday. Most of our citizens are very good about cutting grass and weeds away from their side walks but there are a few who are backward. Business was a little dull about our town while the Payne trial was going on and everyone was surprised at it terminating so soon. Sid Stires says it wasn't much for him to attend to Ed Glover's business last week but there was a part ot Howard Troy's business that no one but Howard could attend to.

However, Sid did the best he could. T. M. Whiteside returned Friday morning from Olathe, where he was attending the State Postmasters' convention. He also went to Kansas City before returning.

Almost everyone in our town was surprised at the acquittal of William Payne, who was on trial last week for the murder of Hollie Hallstead. An old Kentuckian was heard to make the remark this week that he felt more at home every day he lived in Bourbon county. J. N. Holt went to Fort Scott, Fri- Ben Cooper stopped off here Saturday.

He was on his way from Kansas City where he had been" with a load of hogs. Rev. and Mrs. Caldwell, and Miss Bertha went out to Bronson Saturday where Miss Caldwell sang a solo at the Masonic picnic. Miss Cora Robins went to Bronson Saturday.

Mr. Henry M. Whitney, leading tariff smasher in Massachusetts, has an article in the Inter-Nation arguing for tariff revision. He repeats with childlike candor and credence some points that the free trader clings to in the face of facts that overwhelm adult minds of the ordinary quality, says the Buffalo News. Mr.

Whitney says that not over workers in agriculture could be affected by foreign competition if all duties were removed. That would leave over 26,000,000 wage-earners, three-fourths of all In the United States, "whose condition, everybody must admit, would be improved by being able to supply their several wants in the cheapest market." This threadbare assertion is not meant by Mr. Whitney to be funny. He is as serious as ever in his life when he assumes the continuance of current American wages in the face of free trade with countries whose labor is producing everything that Americans use and yet ia paid on a scale of from a quarter to a half of the rate paid In the Uaitedt States. He expressly Says that his figures "show that 91 out of every 100 people would be able to buy more and better things if there were no tariff at all." All this is on the assumption that free trade would not affect wages.

But If it did affect them, and nobody was ever so brave as to maintain that it would not, Mr. Whitney does not tell how the money to buy things Is to be earned on the scale he imagines. And If manufacturing industries went to the wall, with the cutting in half of the buying power of the industrial part of the country, what would be the gain In cheap foreign prices after domestic savings had been spent Germany has just had an exhibition in Berlin in which things of beautiful workmanship were shown. But when the empress of Germany saw them and was told that the wages paid to make them were one cent an hour she went away with tears in her eyes, and no wonder. That is the kind of market Mr.

Whitney would send Americans into to buy. This is the kind of market he would reduce Americans to at home. For the wages paid in Germany are the highest in Europe except in the Brttish Isles, and even England is filled with the starving poor out of employment It will pay you to drive a long ways for what you can save on one of those cream separators at the Bollnger Lumber Sheldon B.
