The Argentine Republic employs a corps of frontier guards, largely recruited from the roving tribes of the pampas', but controlled by Spanish-American officers, who seem to eaforce subordination by rather peculiar methods. Two or three representative warriors of each tribe, are kept under tht surveillance of a sijuad of thirsty veterans, and at the first symptom of mutiny these hostages are cornered and watched at the muzzle of a cocked revolver, while the officer negotiates with the malcontents. Convicted mutineers, however, are no longer flogged, a uisgraeti which their kinsmen would avenga at all risks, but either shot outright oi ordered to run for their lives, followed after a quarter of a minute by a volley of musket-balla. Dr. Felij L.

Oswald. How Victoria Was Named Considerinx the "strained with Russia which marked tin v. hole course of tho queen's reijpi if remarkable that her flirt nanus, should have been conferred vpon her in honor of tho then reigning czar, of whom the Duke of Kent wan an admirer, and who was our faithful and doso ally. It was in Use period of our foreign policy. Gooi-jpj IV was to have contributed another name, Gcorgiona.

But Uecivjiana Alexandrian would have deprived the emperor oftlio place of precedence, and "Aleseudrina tieorgiana" would have denoted from the claims of the na.mo borne by the uc-tual king of England and all lis Hanoverian pre-docetsors. The name of tlw queen's mother was therefore isubstiiutoJ for that of her uncle. In tho commencement of the christening of tho new born princess sho was called Alcxandrina Vic-toire, but the second m.me trpeolily Anglicized or Latinized into Victoria. A littlo before William IV" 's death thero was soino flutter among ollicial people as to tho designation under which the queen expectant should bo proclaimed and should remain, ar.d Lord Campbell, then Sir John Campbell and attorney general, represents liimsclf its hnvinir decided this matter, in conjunction wilh. Charles Grcville and Lord Lyndhurst as representing tho oiiposition, in favor of tho baptismal names for the proclamation, leaving it to tho queen to choose afterward the name under which she uhould reign.

Among other absurd suggestions there was one that sho should be styled Elizabeth II. The assumption apparently was that her majesty was always to remain a maiden queen, with perhaps Lord Melbourne for her Leicester, Lord Jolin Russell for her Essex, and Sir John Campbell for hor Sir Francis Bacon! Tho fates happily have otherwise determined. But it is curious to thuik that but for chance or caprice or good sense wo might now bo preparing for tho jubilee, not of Queon Victoria, but of Queen Aloxnndrina or Queen Georgians I put Queen Elizabeth II out of tho London Wprld. THE FUR SEWERS OF NEW YOltK. SIrl Who Work Hard for Small Amount of Mouey Folaon In t'rte Furs.

Of all the skilled labor that women do, probably the worst and most unhealthy is that of the fur sowers, and few live to work at it more than five or six years, They go into a consumptive decline, loso their sight or become victims to arsenical poison. The buny season with fur sewers is during tho eummer aud early fall, as the garmonts that are to bo soli the following winter are made then, and as that also is tlie season when moths are dying, it is necessary to the workroom closed as far is possible, to prevent any of those dreaded insects from entering. In consequence, the air is filled with minute particles of fur, whioh keep up a constant irritation of the lungs nd a desire to cough which frequently develops into pulmonary consumption in those predisposed that way. The fly ins hairs also get into the eyes, and there are few of the girls who work at that trade long do not have red or sore eves, though tome of them attribute that trouble to tho presence of the arsenic which has been used to cure tlie skins. The fur dealers will tell you that there is no danger to the health in that business, and that there are no poisons used in the preparation of the pelts, but one glance it the girls will disprove that, for nine out of ten will show unmistakable evt denee of poisoning in their pale faces snd miffed out eyelids.

Every pelt has to be oxired with more or lesi arsenic, Mid ho amount of subsequent shaking or dyeing will remove it all. Th girls re ceive it into their system with every prick of the needle and every particle of dust tliey inhale. Tlie very air Is scented with its pungent, coppery odor. Fur sewing is in itself no harder than any other kind of sewing, The workers are generally' seated la low chairs and have the work in their laps and thus bend directly over it. The stitch is an over niul over one and is sown with linen thread, and tiled tile seams are flattened out by means of bono instrument, the wrong side being iii'st damiiened.

The Work is tedicAis, as it iscomiiosedof bun ereds of small bits of fur matched and sewn together to piece out lengths or alter slurries. Tho sewing up of a gar ment is the easiest part of it Some of the girls who work at fur trade are set to making buttons for the sealskin sacques, and as this Work is comparatively easy it is very poorly paid. They earn by steady work about tl a week if expert. In somo coses a whole family of girls will bo found work' ihg together. It takes about a year for ft girl to lotun fur sewing, though those Who finish oil garments must of neces sity understand it better still.

The hay is fair for experts, for they can earn Up to $10 a week, but tho work is not iteady. nnd in the winter and spring there ore mnny idle mouths, so that the nverage is at onco reduced to $3. When harnin2, girls usually get 1 a week for the first year, and it is very raro that one receives over S3 a week inside) of threa years, ami this then is reduced nearly tine-half by the dull months, New York Mail and Ef prttts. August 22nd.

Editor Monitor: Jn your last issue you published items from Phillipsburg by "Jumbo" and feelingthat he did not give a fair "shake," and through personal feeling was inclined to ridicule persons unable to defend themselves, I is a paity of the second part feel it my duty to criticise his action. He says that the only fast horse in town belongs to Rev. J. S. Hall.

Now if "Jumbo" has lived in Phillisburg long enough to be correspondent for tho Monitor he must know better than that, as it if well known, by all persons who are up with tho times, that Wood-ard has men working his horses on tho track every day, and they aro horses that can go in less than 2.40. Anil then "Jumbo'' cometh forth and cracketh that venerable, gray headed old, age chestnut about thestingy young man who gets nearly every Sunday. That would have been a first class joke if it had only been original with the writer, but it had been handled by our village gossipe, com mented and dropped, before 'Jumbo's" calloused brain could comprehend. And now we implore him to make a little inquiry, the next time, about the affairs ol' the town before he writes them for the paper. The Monttou has a goodly number of subscribers in this town and we do not like to see its interests placed in jeopardy by the publishing of such old gags.

Another cute remark of the above nam ed gent's was that "The Phillipsburg B. Band was learning a new tunc and the people all closed their doors and windows. Now if it was a difficult matter for the band to learn a new tune, and when they liegan it was a source of great torture to the natives, is no gentleman to mention it. But on the other hand the band are so far advanced that they can learn anew piece without driving the people from their homes into the cold, cold world-or closing themselves up in a hot and airless closet, as he would have you believe. Then 1 would say that it was done from a personal feeling of jealousy, as our baud instructor.

Mr. A. D. Zimmerman, is very popular young man and by his own good works' hits gained as good a position as any man in town." And as for his musical, I will wage "Jumbo." or any other person, if 100 that he has no equal in North west Kansas. Hoping that "Jumbo" Will show more discretion in tne future and write.
