Chicago, May 24. All the freight Bwitchmen in the employ of the Illinois Central Railroad Company in this city went out on strike at seven o'clock this morning, but returned to work two hours later pending an investigation into the merits of their grievance. Two daya ago one of their number was discharged for alleged neglect of duty and two were suspended for thirty days. The Strikers demand their return to work with pay from the date of dismissal. The local officials of the company are investigating the matter and have promised to right any wrong that may have been done.

The strikers have given the company until five o'clock this afternoon to settle the difficulty. In case of an unfavorable settlement to them, they, with the engineers, firemen and other trainmen who belong to the Railroad Men's Confederation, will strike to-night.
