Alternate. The Business End of a Lodge. The following article was read before a union meeting of Topeka Lodges early this month Topeka, February 15 1911. Brothers In presenting this paper for your consideration, I desire to have it understood that it is not written to urge the adoption of any particular method, but rather by criticism and dfecus'sion we may combine the more salient features of each system and thereby devise one that is both simple and effectual. My experieme in chocking lodge books in the A.

0. U. and other fraternal organizations, is not so much a lack of system as the enf oroe-ment of it. More money has been lost in subordinate lodges by careless officers and inefffkilent auditing committees than the average member realizes, and when a lodge has reached a membership of seven hundred, and which handles twenty-two thousand dollars or more per annum, it is easy to see that lax methods may cause the lodges considerable loss. It is the custom in some lodges to carry members at the discretion, of the financier, or some other officer, on the theory that the member is care-lees and will pay his attention is called to the matter.

No 'lodge should carry a member to exceed one month, and not then unless their by-law's provide for the same, unless by a vote of the lodge it-self. I find much difference of opinion as to the proper' form of books for subordinate lodges, some pref erring one kind and some another. 1 believe a simpler cash book and ledger can be devised than any now in use. A card ledger can be devised that will run for ten years, instead of one or two as the present ones do, and on the reverse side of the card the whole history of the member can be recorded, thereby doing away with the beneficiary register and always having the same alphabetically arranged. I am strong ly in favor of a stub receipt as an object to this as so much additional work, but I am of the opinion that it will not prove so much of a hardship, because they can issue the receipt when busy and post the item in their cash book at their leisure.

Auditing committees should check the books of financiers and receivers once each month, and examine bank book of receiver to ascertain whether funds turned over to him are properly accounted for or not. Some Financiers- accept two or more credit feim wftb the whole amount 1 Parsons McGinnes, E. G. Caldwell, J. P.
