"Mr Davis located in this vicinity in 1867, He engaged in farming 'and followed his trade as blicksmith in Effingham until a few years ago when he retired from active work on account of old age. In his early life he assisted in building a canal in Ohio with James A. Garfield as a fellow workman. He was a government horse shoer at Washington during the war and was employed by the government at Leavenworth when the war closed. His was a life of activity and iudustry and although he has been an invalid for sometime, until a few days before his death he managed to walk up town each day and mingle and converse with old neighbors and friends.

He lived an upright and manly life and possessed many warm friends in this neighborhood who will read the announcement of his death with sincere regret. G.R. Davis, of Effingham, is a nephew of the deceased. Kev. H.
