Capt White of Horton and son Millard of Willis were callers at the HERALD office. They were in attendence at the funeral of J. J. Sloan. George Claypool, who was in the employ of the Electric Light Co, at Atchison, was killed last Tuesday night by catching hold of a live wire.

The two- old daughter of W. F. Guthrie of Atchison while at play in the yard fell into an eight inch sewer pipe which had to be broken before she could be released. The probabilities are that if R. C.

Mead, who is confined in the Atchison county jail charged with embezlement is not convicted, that he and his wife, whom he will live together again. James F. Kelley, the traveling representative of that mammoth Republican daily, the Kansas City Journal, made us a call on Wednes. day. The Journal has been redueed from $7.50 to $4.00 per year.

Another accident showing the risk run by boys who jump on or off moving trains occurred in Atehison last Snndav. George Smart in trying to catch onto the side ofa freight car, missed his hold and fell with one leg under the wheels of the car, resulting in the loss of his left leg just below the knee. Hurrah for Wilson the only representation Huron ever hadin the courthouse. OBITUARY. John J. Sloan, aged fiftysix years, nine months and eighteen days, died at Maple Place, the of his brother, J.

H. Sloan, Mouday, November 4th. 1895. John J. Sloan was born at Gallipolis, Galia county Ohio, 16, 1830, and came to Kansas when he was eighteen years of age, arriving in the state April 1857.

Since that time most ofhis life has been spent in Kansas. The last four years he has lived in Kansas City and for several months has been in failing health, but did not consider his trouble serious until Wednesof last week when he came to his brother's home growing worse rapidly. Death resulted from nenralgia of the heart. The funeral was from the residence where he died, and in accordance with his request was under the direction of Huron Lodge, No 72 A. F.

A. of which he was a charter member. At the house Rev. Paten, pastor of the Presbyterian church delivered a short sermon. At the grave the Masonic burial service was rendered and all that was mortal of John J.

Sloan was laid to rest in the tomb. John Sloan was possessed of many characteristics that the living should emulate. Generous, kind, inCustrious, and appreciative his was a life creditable to the society and church of which he has been a member, to the state of his citizenship, his family and hunself. No man of the writers acquaintance had or deserves more firm friends than the subject of this sketch. There is a new mound in the Huron cemetry, where the snows of winter and raindrops of the maydime will measure the seasons while the "dust is returnen to the earth from whence it came, but in the memories of those who knew and loved him the deeds of his life will eurvive the elements to lead to the world beyond.

The hand cars run along the creek but will excuse the people from the back woods. The Edenites are very sensative people they have got wrong idea of the R. R. trick Thursday. We would all like to read the Independence gossip if it would not tell so much about one family.
