I will ask you a question, kind reader, and leave you to answer it for yourselves Is the man grossly ignorant and prejudiced, or is he so well fed and so In the ranks of the (wage iworkrs themselves, it will be along the line of old age pensions, sick, and accident insurance, reduction of hours of labor) factory inspection, etc. The fanners have demanded nothing, because they have no paganized way of expressing themselves, but soon they will have Before long the tenant class will organize. The small farmers wip continue to cry out against the trusts, until they will see that they must demand the social or state ownership, with Democratic management of 'packing plants, elevators, warehouses, machinery making plants, railroads, etc. Now this, not a part of it but all, is Socialism. The details cannot ba worked out, in advance, but they will follow as necessity, expediency, and experience produce what is good fc the most, and at the same time practical.

When you see this, my brother editor, you will be a Socialist. There i no place else for the man who wanu to be right, and 'who wants the best that is coming to him, and realizes that his chances are slim under the present capitalist system. A. R. RICKER, Associate Editor Appeal to Reason.

that Society is a development. The prinicple and methods of an old order of society always, merge and shade into the new. Socialism is already beginning to develop inside the capitalist shell, just as the butterfly develops, 'in the coc-coon, from the caterpillar. The butterfly is the caterpillar, and yet it is not. Socialism will be society still, but in a new form.

Perhaps my illustration is not prefect, illustrations never are. but you will get tho idea. Socialism is another name for cooperation. Capitalsm is a name for exploitation, which means the use of one individual by another or one set of individuals by another. In chattel slavery the master used or exploited the slave.

In wage slavery the capitalist uses, or exploits the wage worker and the farmer, the former directly and the latter indirectly. The Socialist proposes to substitute for the private or capitalist ownership of socially used property, ieuch as the railroads, shops, mines, banks, the co-operative or social ownership of the same. He would take over this ownership as i tbecomes socially necessary or practicable, just as' the farmer picks the fruit that ripens. The way to become a Socialist is to admit that the Socialist principle is correct. Having done this, you proceed to apply this principle wherever it will work out better for society, than capitalism.

If it is better for society, then it is better for you, providing of course, that you are not a captitalist capitalist is not in favor of Socialism because it does not appeal to his self interest. The members of the capitalist class are the precise beneficiaries of the present system, because by it they compel the producers to do all the drudgery, to make all the good and useful things, and perform all necessary service, even to taking care of the very persons of the rich. The capitalists enjoy the art, the music, the travel, and1 the luxuries. Hardly will they want to change, any more than the feudal lord wanted to give up his vassalSi or the plantation owner his slaves. The working class, wage workers and farmers, however have all to gain and nothing to lose, by the change to co-operative or social ownership.

Their self-interest will move them to bring about the change. The change itself will be a development from capitalism to Socialism, at times sudden, and at others slowly, but always must the change go on. In cities the change is manifested in municipal ownership of gas, electricity, transportation, ice etorage, cold and dry, and in public control of health and housing. This school teacher also asked me what he and I were going to do about our little homes. He seemed to understand that no one under Socialism should haj-e a A I replied to him that the Socialist proposed a system by which all could have a better opportunity to own homes, and that land should not all be owned by a few.

He said, "Well, I know that something will have to be done about the land A rural mail carrier made some guying remarks to me a few days ago for subscribing for the Hughes County Socialist, and I asked him what were there bad about the Socialist, and he said that it was too rotten for him. I asked him to tell me what there were about Socialism that was rotten, and he replied that he did not have time then and would tell me some other time. I guess when he does tell, if he ever does, it will be the same old political and capitalist lie, free-love, destroying homes, the churches and religion. Dan. 2:44.

"And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed." And Math. 16: 18. "Upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevai'against it." To prove the establishment and perpetuity of the churches, and then reverse themselves, make God and Jesus Christ out liars by debating against Socialism and saying that it will destroy the churches. I am a Baptist and will deny that Socialism will destroy the church. Jesus Christ said: "The gates of hell shall not prevail against." I am not going to say that Jesus lied, as some of thes Baptist preachers and other preachers do.
