No Mole Nest, The Laharpe Enterprise. VOLUME 3. LA HARPE, ALLEN COUNTY, KANSAS, FRIDAY, JULY 2, 19 15, NUMBER 38 Our Streets Some of our streets are taking the appearance of beauty, on account of the trees being trimmed several feet above the ground' but the trimming so far has been only in spots. When the trees in a city, along the streets and on the lawns are nicely trimmed so it is possible to see a long distance, a city then attracts the admiration of all, and strangers coming to the city will tell of its beauty. Poor and dwarfy trees should be replaced by a good variety, maple and elm being preferable.

The catalpa trees make poor shade trees, especially the variety so common in Kansas. They are generally the last to put out leaves in the spring and the first to shed them in the fall. The catalpa tree reminds one of the young man who worked for a farmer. He said he had to work so late at nig and get up so early in the morning that he often met himself coming down stairs in the morning when he went to bed at night. Edmonds Breaks Parole Hugh Edmonds, father of four children here in LaHarpe, who are living with their grandfather Jake Shulty, has been caught at Nevada, Mo.

He was to pay to the court $16 per month, $15 of which went to to the support of the children. He will now be sent to Lansing to serve two years time. From the report given in Wednesday's Iola Register it seems that Hugh Edmonds is a cigaret fiend, that he cares nothing for his four children, and deliberately and feloniously abandoned them. Charles is 10 years of age, Wilma 8, Elmer 7, and Leta 5. People need not be surprised that he does not care for his children, as cigarets blunt the sensibilities, and the quickest way for a young man to make a senseless fool of himself is to smoke cigarets.

We wonder why our county and city officers do not enforce better the cigaret law? We wonder why some merchanst will give away cigaret papers or place them where they may be found. One thing is sure, the business man that abets cigaret smoking is impairing young men for life's work, and the young man impaired for life's work will have but little money to pay the merchant in coming years. The story comes from one of the local papers in Arkansas about a man that was afraid of a thunder storm and crawled into a hollow log. The thunder rolled, the rain poured down in torrents, and the log swelled up until the poor fellow was wedged in so fast that he could not move. All his past sins began to pass before him and he suddenly remembered that he had not paid his newspaper subscription.

It made him feel SO small that the was able to crawl out of the log through a knot hole. -Pink Rag. Some one said, "A good, idle man is a paradox, also a woman." Now, how can a man be both a paradox and a woman? A National Creed The Chicago Herald suggests the following as a National Creed by which the men, women and children of America may affirm their Americanism: I believe in the United States, one and indivisible; in her mission as the champion of humanity- as the friend of the weak and distressed; in the singleness, dignity and inviolabiltiy of American citizenship; in the validity of our national traditions; in peace with honor; in friendship with all nations that respect our rights; in entangling alliances with none; in reasonable prepara tions for national defence by sea and land; in shirking no sacrifice needed to hand down to the future the priceless treasures bequeathed to us by the past; in the necessity of keeping the western hemisphere free from the intrusion of European institutions and ambitions; in the capacity of free men for selfgovernment; in the love of home and country; and in the unflinching resolution that government of the people, for the people and by the people shall not perish from the earth.
