It willbe thus seen that winter is not quite gone, although there is a prospect of warm time coming.

We regret to learn that Fredonia has been visited by a severe fire, which consumed nearly all of the buildings in the block located on the west side of the public square. The hotel kept by Mr. Calhoun, formerly proprietor of the City Hotel in New Chicago, was the only building saved in the block. Mr. Calhoun owes his good fortune to a vacant lot which prevented the spread of the devouring element.

On going to press we do not learn of any additional particulars. It would appear from what we learn of the saloon on the corner of Main and Fifth streets, that the ladies sometimes pay the concern an occasional visit. Not to drink, however, but to entice their male relativeshome. This week one of these lady visitors while trying to get her brother out of the place, took umbrage at something and smashed in a window. Wednesday our citv Marshal.

Mr. Wickard. noti- fiej the saioon to tave out license or quit selling rum. This is not the first time such a notice has been given. The City Council have passed a law regulating the sale of liquor, and why should it not be obeyed? The consummate journalistic phenomenon that presides over the columns of the Thayer Head-Light, rejoices exceedingly in the acquisition of a poet of rare ability.

The poetry is on a par with much of the editorial matter which appears in that paper. The poet laureate of the Head-Light gets off the following on Cherryvale "In this vale of Cherry, (without brandy), we've got the the blues, So like to mix our toddies with the latest new And this I drop in haste, poetic stanza, Unto the lively town of Thayer, Kansas." This isexeccdinglv good let us have more of it. And in conclusion, long; live the twinkling Head-Light and its; talented poet. We were thinking that Wednesday i of this week was St. Patrick's day and had actually commenced a long and well written article describing the festivities of the occasion, but the1 foreman spoils it all by insisting that! it was St.

Valentine's dav! We came to the conclusion the foreman was; right after visiting the post office and abstracting a letter therefrom. letter did not contain a single picture of, nor allusion to an Adonis a Wen us, as Sam. Weller has it, or Cupid or! heart pierced with dart, or any thing of the kind nix earn route. But instead thereof there was a picture of monstrous fellow with bub tail coat, with a head dress precisely like that worn by Bottom upon a certain occasion in Mid Summer's Night Dream ears and all. Underneath was written "Ah wauld some power he gift ie gie us, To see oursi'ls as libel's see us." The foreman was right and we exclaimed with Josh Billings: "Oh! for a lodiro in some vast woods." WKATHKK KKl'OUT.

Station extremely near Tioga. Latitude louditude 8x10 precisely. Elevation of the thermometer above the level of the sea at low tide so that clams are visible three stories and a half, tape line measurement. During the week right smart snowness with slight spasms of wetness, with a few dryness to prevent bustification upon meteorological half-shell. At one time the dog-gon mercury became greatly demoralized, and cut a caper like Don Quixote did in the Sierra Morena, when) Saneho Panzas said to him, "shoo fly." Mercury still showing great demoralization and consequent degradation.

Friday meercury imitates Zip Coon and falls down cellar 2ti feet according to the barometer and theodolite. Saturday represents "Uncle Tom's Cabin, or life among the lowly," by Harriet Bitcher Stowe, brother of Henry Ward Beecher, the showman. Mercury still down cellar, thermometer wouldn't follow suit nor trump either, but staid up stairs. Bully for the thermometer. Windnor-west by sow-east.

Pull in the clothes line. Mean temperature of the week the meanest we ever knew mean enough to steal a sheep. Towards the end of the week got so mean that it would sweat, swagger, swear, chew plug tobacco and drink corn whiskey so new that you could smell the boy's boots that sodded in the corn. Sun shone like an old Trojan during most of tho days in the week, except in the shade, but generally disappeared at night like a good boy. For continuation see Thayer Tail i.

scribed $6,000 for the purpose of erect- i ing a flouring mill. We noticed a young gent of this place who bad been paying a visit to a lady friend the other evening, with a hair pin sticking in the shoulder of his coat. Better take your hair down on such occasions, girls. As the cars run through the corporation for about a half mile where there are a number of street crossings, it might prevent an accident and probable serious injury if the bell or whistle should be used to warn all persons to keep a sharp look out. The carpenters are busily engaged in putting together the frame work for Mr.

Breedlove's new house. It will be quite a neat building when completed. If the weather of the past few days continues, there will be smiling faces among the carpenters of Tioga. Dr. Fayette, of the firm of Richardson informs us that he vaccinated twenty-six persons Tuesday of this week.

His virus is pure and never fails to work on proper subjects. We have seen a number of children in town who have come from Dr. Fayett's hands proof from small-pox. Messrs. S.

A. Wickard and Wra. White, ho ha ve been on their claims near Wichita for the past six weeks, returned to Tioga Thursday evening, appears to have agreed with the boys, but they assure us that the secret of their looking so well is, that thev had an excellent cook. We learn that the Rev. G.

W. Pye, pastor of the M. E. church, had a fit one day this week by being presented with a handsome black cloth coat. This testimonial of respect was a happy surprise.

We hope the balance of our clerical friends may also receive such appropriate fits. A frightful accident occurred on the Ohio ami Mississippi Railroad, near Georgetown Station, Monday. Two freight trains collided, and almost immediately afterwards the Eastern express came thundering up at a terrific rate of speed, and dashed into the wreck. Several persons were killed. The County Commissioners have is sued their pvoclamati for an elec tion to be held on the 12th dav March, 1872, in the several voting precincts throughout this county.

The ballots used will be headed, County Se.it," and following tliereaf- ter shall be the name of the place for which the elector desires to vote. We wouhl like to see a thousand shade trees out in the eity during the coming spring. They re not only ornamental, but add to the valuu of real estate. Leave your orders at Richardson drug store iitld you tan obtain, at a very low figure, young thrifty forest trees at a verv small manrin. We are gratified to learn that our business meu are earnestly agitating the project of immediately building a good bridge across the Neosho about a mile east of us.

Let there be no lagging until the bridge is completed. Besides accommodating our friends across the river, it will materially increase our already flourishing trade. Messrs. Mills of Thayer, have been acquitted on the charge that was trumped up against them not long ago of passing counterfeit money. No one who knows these gentlemen doubted for a moment the result of the affair.

They are both high minded, honorable business men and have the entire confidence of all who ever ileal with them. Even the Head-Light is "glad to make the announcement." The Presbyterians of New Chicago will give their friends a chance to indulge in a grand neck-tye festival, on on the 22d day of February. It will be held at the Planters House, and we hope thatupon the occasion there will be a general attendance, as the proceeds will be appropriated for the benefit of the church. We are assured that no pains will be spared to make the entertainment pleasant to all who attend. Oysters and many other del icacies will be served up during the evening.

It would appearfrom the following notice which appears in the Statesman, that the sporting fraternity of Allen county were in the habit of laboring in their vocation on the Sabbath dav "To WHOM IT MAY CONCERN We the undersigned citizens of Allen county, Kansas, take this method to notify nil persons not to desecrate tho Sabbath by hunting or fishing. Any person found guilty after the publication of this notice will be punished according to law." The above notice is signed by a number of citizens. We must confess that six days hunting and fishing in the week industriously attended to, ought to yatisfv any man. a square meal, go to the Lindell Hotel, Kansas City. J.

II. Bagivill, Proprietor. Cherryvale. This place was first started in August last, consequently rts age can very easily be determined. It numbers now about 20 business houses and upwards of three hundred people, and this remarkable growth is of the most substantial and permanent character.

Cherryvale is in the eastern portion of Montgomery county, one of the very lest counties in Kansas or the West. It is on the Leavenworth, Lawrence it Galvestion Railroad, 100 miles southeast of Kansas City, 124 miles south of Lawrence, and 16 miles north of the state line. It is also the initial point of the railroad west now completed to Independence. It is but 16 miles from the intersection of the different branches of the M. K.

T. Railway at Parsons, and the speedy extension of that road to this point can hardly be doubted. Provision has been made for the erection of a public school building, work upon which is to be immediately commenced. The location of the town is a beautiful one, and it is surrounded by one of the most magnificent farming districts to Ik? found in tho south-west. City lots range from to 100.00.

Farming lands range from S3 to 10 per acre. People visiting the south-west are particularly invited to stop at Cherryvale and satisfy themselves of the superior inducements offered to intelligent and enterpris ing people to locate there.
