An Expensive Luxury. The Taylor-Ritesman trial which ended last week has been an expensive luxury. We learn from those who ought to know that the costs from first to last will approximate 81500. Luxuries oome high, but the people will have 'em. 11 For Field Walk, Forth a Free Man -Shakes U-uds With Friends and Receives Thfcir Congratulations.

This was the verdict of the jury in the ca9e of Cassie Taylor against Martin Ritesman charging statutatorv rape and which was tried before Judge R. F. Thompson in this oity last week. Io Monday's Topeka Copital some one from this city writes as follows: "There was closed at the last term of oourt one of the most remarkable trials ever heard in Ottawa county. It was the case of the state against Mart Ritesman, for statutory rape.

The viotim in the oase is a girl named Taylor, who was only 15 years old at the time the crime is alleged to have been committed. The two first trials of the case resulted in a hung jury, and the last trial in acquittal. The guilt of Ritesman was proven to the satisfaction of everybody but the jury, not only by the testimony of the girl, but by the confession of the prisoner to the of ficer who placed him under arrest, but the jury Bays he is not guilty and that ends it," etc. The jury was composed of the follow ing men. As good a jury in every re spect as was ever empanelled in Ottawa county.

They could have no motive in trying this case but that justice might be done. They have spoken. This should settle the matter. Here is the jury: W. H.

Chappe'l, BlaineV Chas. Fear, oity; Lewis Corlis, Bennington; Paul Marte, Grant; S. P. Shields, Mor ton; Sol. House, Ottawa; W.

P. Cross, city; Dalton Davidson, Lincoln; Leonard Bennett, Sheridan; R. C. Pierce, Center. J.

E. Grace, Fountain; A. E. Cross Blaine. The jury was composed of six republi cans, three populists and three democrats.

There was one drayman, one carpenter and ten farmers on the jury. All, if we have not been wrongly informed, were married men. The thin ioe and the opaque spot with the state was that the prosecuting witness oould not locate within several weeks the date of the outrage she oharged against the defendant. The evidence was not "as clear as holy writ." The reasonable doubt, like Ban-quo'q ghost, would not down, and hung over the case from start to finish. The jury was so good and the state so well pleased with it that it waived its last peremptory challenge.

Contradictions in the testimony of the prosecuting witness changing date of offense, had muoh to do in shaping the verdict. This witness was very exact in detailing unimportant events in their smallest detail, but her memory was entirely deficient when it oame to what the proseoution claimed as material facts and the major premise. These things militated against the state and logically, no doubt, had a great deal to do in shaping the verdict. There was no lack upon the part of Prosecuting Attorney Boyce, He was active, vigilant aad handled the case with and without gloves. We have faith in the jury and believe the verdict was honestly rendered.

This is the season when they are the dearest emphasis on 'the dear creatures on earth. Cecil Rhodes' fortune is estimated at 170,000,000.00. Every dollar bears upon it the impress of blood.

The man who has no stronger reason for honesty than fear of the law is certain to become a thief sooner or later. TheTopeka State Journal says John Peter St. John has gone over to the Democrats. The supreme court has deoided in favor of the old sheriffs and against the appointees. The opinion holds that there are no vaoanoies in the offloe of sheriff whioh the governor is author ized to 1111. Success in life is not very diffioult. There are a few important rules you must observe, and the rest is easy.

You must be industrious, temperate, progressive and honest, and take advantage of experience. Not much else is necessary. The more suooessf ul the man, the more persistently he praotioes these rules. Pope Leo XIII realizes that death is near and issued a last farewell in his Easter enoycle. His final admonition is an encouragement to Catholic bishops a warning against troubles that beset the church and a final admonition against the curse of anarchy.

The pope has failed materially during the last few days. It is related of an Atchison woman whose husband died when two of her ohildren were too small to remember him lhat the fact that they couldn't recall his face distressed her so that she had Ihe body exhumed about three years after death, and let the children see their father. It is also related that they were perfectly satisfied. When Fred Funston went to seePresi-dent Rcesevelt, the two had a long talk. Aa they were parting the president said: "By the ay, Funston, I have an extra horse in the stable.

Come around this tfternoon, and have a ride wth me." "No," replied Funston, "I don't partic ularly oare to ride, but if you agree we'll go down and swim across the Potomac" Ed Howe. Equal sufirage has received a knock out blow in Kansas with eighty-five lewd women registered in Leavenworth and equal suffrage women smashing saloons and mayors in Topeka, it is time to oall halt to a movement that never had sense for its foundation. The men are not slave drivers, and the claim of women suffragists that they are, is deplorable and unfair. Ed Howe. General Miles, who was promoted three times by Abraham Lincoln for bravery during the rebellion, and who wm wounded several times in battle, expressed an opinion, and was repri manded by the president, in language that would have bean oonsidered rough ia a bar room.

Little Fred Funston, a oomio opera hero in a oomio opera war, has been running over the ooun try referring to the best citizens of the country as because they do not endorse extravagance and foolishness in the Philippines.
