Stewart, an attoaney from Woodson county was disbarred ono day last week by JubgeTalcott. A. S. Hank ins, niade his appearance on our streets yesterday for the first time in two months. The Humboldt delegation shook the tree last Saturday, but the other fellows got the persimmons.

Elmer Quackenbush, was fooling with a pistol a few days since and shot himself through the hand. Mr. Chivers, representing Wanamaker Brown clothiers and dyers ofTopeka, was in town last week. Anderson DeClute are agents for Gisecke Meysenburg Co. Hand Made Boots every pair warrented.

Gen. Harrison Kelley has received the Republican nomination for Senator in Coffey and Wilson counties. The Democrats at their convention last week endorsed Green, the Greenback candidate for congress. John Richardson of tho Mineral Well was so unfortunate as to receive a broken arm in a runaway last week. D.

Reynolds delivered the best temperance lecture that has been talked to the people of Iola at any time. Our sanctum was graced by the smil-faces of Misses Blanche Cain and Ida Cartels Monday. Call again ladies. The surveyors commenced locating the new railroad Monday between Union-town and the east line of this county. Anderson DeClute have receid the largest invoice of Clothing from Rochester, N.

Y. ever shipped to Iola. Just received, the most complete line of stationery, blank books and notions in the city at Scott's. Peter Tickarts of Humboldt was in town Thursday. It is a rare thing for him to leave his work for any purpose.

A Garfield aud Arthur club was organized in Iola last Saturday evening with two hundred and fifty signatures. Lost A gold sleeve button. The finder will be suitably rewarded by leaving the same at Hutchinson's grocery store. That old stalwart, J. Patterson, took in the Convention and shook hands with his many friends in town last Saturday.

At the Garfield and Arthur club last Saturday evening C. M. Simpson was elected Presideat and James DeMoss Secretary. G. W.

Moon, a stalwart Republican of Humboldt township, was one of the delegates to the Republican onven veution. John Ireland and Monroe Goforth were in attendance on the Democratic Congressional Convention at Ft. Scott, last week. Mo f. Christian, a brother of Davie's, is visiting Kansas.

He eays the Republi cans will carry Indiana. He is from Rockville. Maude Christian, daughter, and Alva, the son, of Jas. Christian, are away at school, the former in Topeka, the latter in Lawrence. Jack Clark, John Walters and Will Conley were at Neosho Falls last week.

Clark and Conley were looking for locations for stands. Hon. R. V. Blair, one of the most substantial aud reliable citizens of Cottage Grove was in attendance at the convention on Saturday.

We were mistaken last week when we said Miss Laura Arnett, of this city, was attending the State University. It was Baker University instead. Prof. Harris will lecture on temperance aud the Constitutional Amendment at Carlyle Presbyterian church Sunday evening Sep. 19th.

The popular Trustee of Humboldt, J. P. Duncan, was looking on at the convention. Mr. Hottensteiu of Humboldt township was also present.

Miss Nellie Schley, formerly of Huni' boldt, was mairied in Kansas City last week. Miss Ella Martin, of Humboldt, was one of the bridesmaids. E. D. Brown and B.O.

A test of endurance between men and horses for 15G hours which occurred in Chicago last week resulted in the former accomplishing the greater number of milos. To our many subscribers who have talked of paying for their paper in wood, we would say, the time is coming when man freezeth if it gets too cold, and wo man doth likewise. We understand that the same peculiar type of typhoid fever with which our people have been troubled the last few months, is raging to a considerable extent in Humboldt. Tax sale this year was the smallest for years. Last year there were 237 farm tracts advertised.

This year 103 nearly all of which sold. What speaks louder for prosperity. The dedication of the new United Brethren church five miles south west ot Iola, will take place Oct. 3, 1880, Rev. W.

Mr. Henderson will con tinue the business at the old stand, and desires a continuanco of your patronage. The Garfield Club completed its or ganization last Saturday night, by electing a complete set of officers. The Club will meet next Saturday night and will be addressed by W. H.

Slavens. Let there be a good turn out, Ladies are especially invited. W. J. Yates, son of our former townsman Mr.

Benj. F. Yates, is a candidate for representative in his district in Neosho county. Will is a stalwart Republican as well as a live and energetic worker and we seriously doubt in that district can be found another representative. Some fellows swindled a colored man in a patent right trade at Neosho Falls secretly and boasted that he could not give bonds to recover his property.

Several prominent persons immediately went on the colored mans bond when the other fellows offered a fair compromise, which was accepted. Dr. Hendricks and W. H. Slavens addressed a small audience at Fair Lawn last Friday night.

E. D. Brown will speak at the same place one week from next Sunday on temperance. Brown and Murray will also talk at Jeddo one evening this week, and Keplinger and Murray in Elsmore on Thursday evening. John Harris a Jew days ago while loading a revolver, pushed the cartridge in with his knife and the pressure being too heavy the cartridge exploded the ball entering and lodging near the center of his left hand.

The doctor probed for the ball, a twenty-two, but could not find it. The wound is healine rapidlv but is very painfull. Mr. John Charles and Miss Teresa Neal, of Humboldt, were married yesterday morning at the residence of Moses Neal. Mr.

Charles has lived in Allen county for some years and is ot the most successful stock dealers the county has ever had. Miss Neal partakes of the genial social nature that has made her parents so very much liked in Humboldt. All parties are to be congratulated on this truly happy occasion. Mr. John B. Charles, and Miss Teresa L. Neal, all of Allen county. A small but very pleasant company of fjienvs were present to witness the cere-emony or enjoy the excellent repast provided, for which a morning ride at the refreshing hour of seven clock, had fully prepared the guests.

Don't fail to go to the District Fair And have a good time next week. John Richardson will have a refreshment stand at Neosho Falls Fair. The time for putting up stoves, and so has the time come for family jars. Don't forget to attend the meeting of the Garfield Club Saturday night. Jake Ahlefeld, an Attorney from Le-roy, was in town last Wednesday.

The first frost ot the season '(that we have seen) came Monday morning. J. H. Richards was up to Garuett last Saturday defending a caiininal case. Quite a number of our people are attending the State Fair at Bismarck.

Israel Jones, of Franklin station, Ohio, has a son whom the doctors had given up with Diabetes. Neosho Valley Fair- The Seventh Annual Fair of the Ne osho Valley District Fair Association will be held at Neosho Falls, Sept. 20th to 25th, Noted speakers from all over the State are to be present and deliver addresses. Entries are already being made in the speed ring, and this promises to be more attractive this year than ever before. Two novelties in the shape of a Chariot Race and Balloon ascension are annonnced for the entertainment of those present. The Agricultural and Horticultural exhibits this year will be larger than ever before.

Let us all turn out and visit this fair and see for ourselves what Kansas can do in the shape of a first class Fair. Report Of Allen county Teachers Association. Association met at high school building at Iola on Saturday Sept. 11th 1880 Association was called to order by Vice President W. H.

Owing to convention being held at the time and several who were assigned duties on programme being absent, the So ciety voted not to hold an afternoon session, and after enrolling several new members adjourned to meet at Humboldt in four weeks. Farmers all busy, and wheat sowing and corn cutting not over yet. The Neosho Valley Fair Associatiation will send the "Thing" up this time. Mrs. P. Woodmansee from Java N.

Y. is visiting her sister Mrs. Lewis Clukey. There are no new cases of sickness reported in our neighborhood for the past week. Mr.

E. Dolittle just threshed the best lot ol navy beans we nave ever seen raised in Kansas. log and cattle buyers are again on the move. Stock of that kind meets with a ready sale and at paying prices. J.

H. Spicer has just made and put in successful operation one of our old fach-ioned apple pealers. It works like a charm. What was taken to be the "New Electric Light" in the south part of town last week was Ben Berry's newly whitewashed house. Dr.

Knowlton made the round trip from his residence to the P. 0. one day last week but since then has not been able to be out. Mr. S.

G. Maibe and daughter started for their old home in Oneida county N. Y. We are sorry to learn that they are not intending to return. Sammie Vintons little dog was bit by a rattle snake last Saturday.

Three doses of whisky were administered and the little pet is in a fair way to recover. Business was uncommonly dull on pur streets on -Saturday. Our political aspirants with many others interested in the welfare of Allen county went to Iola to the county convention. A Yankee Book Agent is running for a "Fools Errand." The book that is creating such a stir among all classes and parties judging fron the number of subscribers it meets with a ready sale. The temperance meeting last Thursday night was reported a final success.

S. M. Irwin "broke the ice" and Win. Banta "waded in" with a rousing old speech. The next meeting promises to be the "Big Boom." We are glad if some one has got this "right flap." It stood in front of D.

Leavitts wagon shop undergoing repairs. We all wondered what it was and what it had been and guessed at its age and how much longer it could stand the racket but said it was a sautipede or a velocipede, and a Democrat ballot box stealers and so on until John Knowlton put in an appearance and said it was a two wheeled telephone. Then a white haired boy came and drove it off out of town and when our reporter had interviewed the mystery and saw it take on a supply of castor oil knew tiat Joha was right, Anon, we will Please you. ayTrunks and Satehells The Republican County Couvention met at the Court House last Saturday at one clock P. M.

and placed in nomina tion the following ticket: For District Clerk, Win. Davis; for Probate Judge, W. G. Allison; for Supt. of Public Instruction, Frank Root; for County Attorney, W.

Slavens; for Representation of the 53d. District, R. Stevenson; for County Commissioner. 3d. District, A.

W. Howland. The ticket is a good one and will bo elected. Gen. Dexter E.

Clapp, of Woodson county, has been grossly misrepresented in reference to some old Indian Agency contracts and should receive a vindictive at the hands of Woodson county this fall. He will make a yery influential member of the bouse. Coalitions with Democaats ought to be discountenanced in every way. Nothing is to bo gained by them except the defeat of a good working party representative to merely gratify some personal spleen. We hope Woodson county will avoid any such a contest this fall.

The following resolutions adopted by teachers of the Jewell County Institute we clip from Jewell county Monitor: Whereas, We, the teachers of Jewell county, feeling that our institute has been an abundent success, and that we have made the most rapid advancement in our studies on account of the good feeling and harmony that has prevailed throughout the term, and desiring to show our appreciation of the kindness and painstaking efforts of our instructors, and the good feeling of the people of Mankato, ever manifested during the progress ot the Institute, do hereby offer the following resolutions liesolved That we tender our thanks to D. Kenny, our County Superintendent, for securing the services of Profs. Harris and Scott conductor and Instructor of the Jewell County Normal Institute of 1880. Resolved: That we hereby oxpress our very warmest appreciation of the labor of Prof. P.

II, Harris, as Conductor of this Institute. For four weeks he lias labored faithfully and with the utmost enthusiasm in our interests, and to make us more worthy of our profession, and we desire to express our hearty thanks and thorough approval of this work. Resolved: That the work of Prof. A. C.

Scott, as Instructor in the Institute, is such as to call for the highest need of praise. His faithful and earnest work has given us a high regard for his character, and we do but echo his own words when we bid him "God speed" in all the labor of the future that may be before bim. Resolved: That we respectfully request the County Superintendent to make an earnest effort to secure the services of Profs. Harris and Scott for the Jewell County Institute of 1881. Convention Notes-John Knowlton was a patient spectator.

Lon Howland, of Geneva, was smiling on every one. H. D. Smith received a large vote for County Attorney. J.

O. Fife received four votes for County Attorney. Iola delegates were all present and acted as a unit. Hon. E.

H. Funston viewed the proceedings with interest. Frank Nigh was a delegate from Cottage Grove. The Republicans there always send him. Isaac Nigh and a son of Capt.

Stewart, took in the excitement manifest at the Convention, Peter Long, E. R. Russell, L. W. Keplinger, O.

J. Johnson, M. Donoho and Ed. Barber helped to solidify tho Humboldt delegation. J.

Cox, M. D. Stout, Sylvester Wilcox James Ard, Holslein, Davis, Spencer and Smith, of Elsmore, were among the spectators. Capt. J.Stewart made a happy little speech in seconding the nomination of L.

L. Hartman for Superintendent. Sam Stewart is a worker. Gorrell and Isaacs, the representatives of active workers at the Convention. Elm sent Delaplaine and Worst, excellent men.

Britton and Stanley, two old reliables, represented Osage. Deer creek had Wm. Davis, Con Mull and John Banghman, while Geneva was not a whit behind with McClure, Elliott, Charley Knowlton and John Dickey.
