This tiwn has gone mad with excitement and religions frenzy, following a visit of four armed men to the room of an anti-Catholic lecturer in the Capital Hotel last night. Two men were killed and another was mortally wounded in the fight that followed.

When the smoke of the fusillade of shots had cleared away William Black of Bellaire, 0., who claimed he was an ex-priest and had deliv ered a lecture at the court house the night before on "Effects of the Confessional -Box," was dead. John Rogers, a Marshall contractor, Catholic and prominent member of the Knights of Columbus, who is believed to have killed the ex-priest, dying; and John Copeland, cashier of the First State Bank, member of the Knights of Columbus, was mortally wounded. George Ryan, a Marshall Cathc lie, was arrested, but was released on bond. John Teese, negro porter employed at the bank where Copeland worked, has not been, captured. C.

F. Hall, a companion of the murdered lecturer, is in jail charged with murder. IMiss Sadie Black, adopted daughter of the ex-priest and an eye-witness of the tragedy enacted in her father's at the home of sympathizers. Stories of the tragedy vary as to details; but it is generally believed Rogers killed Black, the "ex-priest, "and was shot to death by Black's companion, C. F.

Soon after, the men entered the room the shots were fired. Miss Black claims that all the three Catholics and their negro companion fired, and that her father's companion shot in self-defense. There is a good deal of sentiment here in favor of the visitors. Many persons went to the jail today and told Hall they would aid him in getting bail if he would apeak agaiin tonight. GIRL'S STORY.

According to the statement Sadie Black, the two men met her father in the hallway and fol- lowed him into his room. She said her father was seated the room. when the other men came up and the shooting commenced. She said three of the men shot at her father while the fourth at-i tempted to catch, his hands, and then when she saw that her father was being shot she threw her arms around Kim. and was holding him when the last shots were fired.

Just who fired the first shot is not known, nor could it be learned now man, ere urm, cause the fusillade became general jn the room and in the hallway, Black was shot through the heart, You Can Devote All or No Capital Required Only "Push anaEgery Chicago Murder Tells Story Former Pastor On Stand In Oivn Defense Says He Is AffUc-. ted With Weird Dreams. From Chicago Daily News of Feb.3 The Rev. John J. Mullen took the stand in Judge Dever's court to-day to tell the history of Ids life up to the moment he killed Thomas W.

He continued in a quiet manner to speak of his work in America, as head of the orphans' home at Sali-na, and pastor of the Church of the Holy Rosary. Mind Turns Blank Suddenly. At length Father Mullen reached the tune of the slaying. He had narrated his movements dining the hours "We went in the automobile from Elmliurst to Bell wood and then we went to a cemetery. We stopped in at a saloon on returning to Elm-hurst and decided to go to Hillside.

I had one glass of beer in the saloon.1 I was sober. I remember distinctly everything that happened "We arrived at Hillside and stopped in front" of the saloon. One of the men went in. Reynolds, 424 Plymouth Building, Slnaeapolis, Minn, (TJ Write Now Before Some Other Person Gets Control of Your County When I was in Chicago attending the Convention of the Federation of Patriotic Voters in June, 1914, I was on the street wearing the Canvention Badge. A policeman stopped me and said, "I'd like to speak with you. Can you come back this way in an hour, but take off that badge, don't want to be seen talking with you -with that badge on." I agreed, and came back in an hour with the badge removed, I had quite a talk with him. Among other things he told were, that fully two thirds of the Chicago Police were Romanists, that he being a non-Romanist had to keep very quiet and submissive 01 he would soon loose his job. He told me a lot of thing's, but a-rnong them, he pointed out a Church, and said "There are over thousand rifles in that Church I have seen that many and how many more there may be 'I don't know." I asked him, "If you are not a Romanist, how did you tret into the church to see?" "Any one with a police uniform who will dip his finger in the Holy Watec and cross himself, and kneel at the right places, can go most anywhere in a Catholic Church in Chicago," he "I've seen over 100 policemen at a' time kneding down in some of these churches." "Have you ever heard them say what they propose to do vith thesa arms I asked.

"Of course they toll me very much," he said, "but I can listen, and hear what is said, and I have had some of them when they were pretty drunk and off duty, to tell me a lot that they wouldn't be likely to say if sober, and they have a pretty clear idea that there Is coming a time when word will be passed for them to rise and capture the government. Then too as one told me when drunk, that it "was always best to to be prepared and ready, for there's no telling what might happen. Another, who was pretty drunk, told me he'd like to see me the Church, as it would be a pity to have to kill a decent chap ike I me that one of them was toasUyg onojiw whsn bs-'msJeL. ptiMv r'-iiiLk hint the' Father had tcld him that, they had most of the officers and a lot of the men in In th the Army and Navy, and in the State Militia, who were good Catholics. That they had men as secretaries to all the leading officers of the general and the State Governments, and when they were pood nnd ready, it would be as easy to capture the whole govern-mentrnent as to change your shoes.

Regarding these statements this policeman said he was not so sure, they were true, but that in Chicago, ind in Illinois, as far as he knew, that all was truo as that fellow had said, and he enumerated from the Mayor; Chief of Police, and on down an appalling list of officers I myself knew nothing of, and said as he checked them off, "they are all catholics." I asked him if he could swear to what he had said. He answered, "I could, but I can't, for it would mean that I would not only be but a job, hut would have to clear out and keep hid, for you don't know these men. They wouldn't think anything of havinn you disappear." "Disappear?" I asked, and he said, "Chicago is as bad a place for a man to disappear in New York ever was. If I was in with that crowd I might know, but I have my belief that men are made way with hero in Chicago, and that a thing of that kind can be paid for just as you'd buy a suit of clothes. Why see: here.

If I was a Catholic I would have been in the plain clothes gang long ago. Did you know that one of the greatest pulls the Catholic Church has, is that three fourths of the detectives from Bums down are Catholics?" I told him I didn't doubt it. He said "Well of course I don't know of myself outside Chicago, but that's what I've been told by the Catholics themselves, and have been advised to join the Church and get a 'raise' that's the wav-they put it." I can sign an affidavit that this was the substance of what a Chicago policeman told me, and he dared to speak to me thus because he saw I wore the convention badge and was a stranger in Chicago. Of course he obligated me not to take his number, and his name and address he would not give, but he gave me the name and address of a friend who took the Menace, which he read, and to whom I could send papors. This man had seen and read the Menac- and other Patriotic Papers and was a Mason, only he said it would be "bad business for me if I waa ii witi.

The Famer Scotti Case in New Orleans The New Orleans Picaune, States and Item are all full of the account of this priestly scandal and the court reports of the trial of the case. We told some of it in our December number. It's too long to go into details, but the court show the wily, vile, cowardly and despisable methods of the Roman priesthood. Evasive, shifty, tricky and as devilish as "old split foot" their own' daddy Let's sift it down into a few words. Two nriests in cahoots for it swindled a woman.

She won't stand for it, being robbed so raw, and although they are "caught with the goods," their dirty work proved, yet then defense is so low and mean the devil himself would blush to stoop to it. Yes, we laterally picked her pocket, bat she's a bad woman, THEREFORE we holy dads are innocent. How's that for low down contemptable meanness? Suppose a pickpocket tried such a defense, would he "get away with it Not on your John, Henry, Suppose he said, "Yes, I picked his pocket, but he was drunk, and therefore. I am innocent." What has that to do with the charge? New Orleans is a pape ruled city. All the papers and tie judges are afraid of the Roman Catholic Mafia, if they are not part of "de gavg." Now what sort of a chance has a woman in such a "den of thieves?" If they don't prison her, she's lucky.
