Judhk Goodin has been holding court at Iola this week, and the Humboldt Attorneys have consequently been scarce on our streets during the day time. The Girard Press, heretofore an able paper, oomes out eloquently and ably for Greeley and Brown. Crawford oounty is good for an immense majority for the Liberal movement. l' a Kei.ioiocs services will be held at the Presbyterian Church in this city on Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, and in the evening at the usual hour, by Rev, Camborn. Master Orlin Thurston, son of Col. Thurs ton, who has been absent at school, at St, Mary's College, returned home on Friday of last week, looking as bright as a Zouave Ma jor. Orlin is a scholarly boy, and gives good promise of future manhood.

Mr. S. Webb and several of his neigh bors, have just returned from a trip two hun dred miles west of Humboldt, where immense herds of buffalo and antelope, and flocks of wild turkey were encountered, but no Indi ans. Mr. Webb reports thecouutry the finest he over saw well-timbered, rich soil and any quantity of cold, clear springs, and run ning water in abundance.

The Messrs. T. L. Byrne and F. C.

Bod. dridge, both very clever young gentlemen and promising lawyers of this City, have formed a co-partnership for the practice of law, under the firm style of Byrne Dod dridge. Theiroflice is one door east of Pratt Dayton's bank. Mr. Byrne is so well known in this community that commendation is unnecessary.

Mr. Doddridge has had seven years practice at the bar, (two years in Chi cago, 111.) and is supplied with a fine library. He will take prominent rank among the law yers of Kansas. ToHiiks. Elder J.

E. Loring, pastor of the colored church of Humboldt, requests us to return to our citizens his thanks for their generous contributions to aid in securing a place of worship, and to express his wish that the Lord may bless and prosper them, and final ly savo them in heaven. have sold their Drug Store, corner of 7th and Bridge Streets, in this city, to Messrs. Cates and Co. The new firm have secured the services of Dr. Tebbs' former very popular clerk, Mr. W.

Thomas. Dr. W. Max Dunn has also re moved his office from 8th street to Dr. Tebbs' former office, connected vith the Drug Store.

We regret to learn tnat Dr. Tebbs will proba bly remove to Kansas City, where he formerly resided. He has made many warm friends in this city; The new firm of Cates Co. solicit a share of the jiublic patronage. Pergonal Mr.

Hysinger tf St. Ldui's, father of the senior member of the firm of Hysinger Ro senthal, has been on a visit to this city du ring the last ten days, and expresses himself as delighted with our country and climate. If the, wealthy gentlemen of the East knew what a delightful country and climate we have in Southern Kansas, they would spend their Summer vacations here instead of going to the usual places pf resort. Judge Knox, of Bureau county, Illinois, is again in our city looking after bis extensive interests in Allen county. The Judge reports tbe Greeley enthusiasm in Illinois as something wonderful, and says there is no doubt whatever of the Liberals, carrying the State.

Removal of the Iola Ilritltre Shops. The Topeka- CommonweaUK- of July- 1st, contains the proceedings of a meeting in that city, from which it appears that the company operating the Iola Bridge Shops offer to remove their shops to Topeka on condition that the city of Topeka will give the company the use of two hundred thousand dollars of ten per cent bonds, running ten years, and exempt the shops from local taxes during the time, the company paying the interest ou the bonds, and agreeing to redeem them at par when due. There is scarcely a doubt that Topeka will accept this proposition, as the company offer either personal security, or mortgage upon six hundred thousand dollar worth of property. Should these shops be removed from Tola, it will be a serious loss to that enterprising little city, and to tLc whole county. If this calamity can be averted we hope it may be speedily done.

Meantime let us be that we do not. involve ourselves in a like situation with the thff now being erected in this city. on Monday, July 8lh, at lior residence near Mr. Curdy', ller terms will suit the times, Wiimio lesnons uit usual. False Itoiiort.

The Taper is a small but neat twelve column paper, printed at this office, but edited and published by Benny F. Buroh, a juvenile compositor, Benny is enterprising, industrious and ambitious, and we shall be pleased to know that lie l't with encouragement.

About one mile will be immediately made ready for the ties, as under the Greenwood County bond vote, work had to be commenced by July 1st. The right of way has been scoured through Allen county west of Humboldt, and undor the efficient management of Gen. Shepherd the work will be pushed forward a rapidly as the mean at hi disposal will admit of. Ntinlight and Tressefi. One day last week two sprightly little nymphs, the Misses Neenah Smith and Fannie Pratt, brought a flood of sunlight and a shower of tresses into our sanctum.

Their happy faces were radiant with scintillations, and the jaunty toss with which they shook their pretty ourls showed clearly that the poet was right when he said; "Fair tresses man' imperial race ensnare." The nymphs, we are sure, wore wholly unoonscioua of this peculiar power. May they oome again. Announcements. Nuperlntendent of Public Instruction. To the Editors of The Southwest: The education of a people should be considered of paramount importance.

France has said, educate the mothers; Prussia, educate the soldiers; our Government has for its motto, educate the people. Ignorance has been the blight of nations, education the star of hope. Theory and practice must go hand in hand in art, science or literature. Experience adds wings to faith in the investigation of principles and pursuit of knowledge. A person who assumes to educate the youth of our land should have experience in that work.

A physician is selected on account of his knowledge of medicine and practical ex perience in the treatment of diseases. A lawyer on account of his legal attainments and success in practico. The selection of persons to fill the various offices of trust in the department of education should follow the game rule. The teachers of Allen county having chosen the undersigned as their standard bearer for the above named office, it is proper for me to state that I desire not to be a candidate of either political party, as a party candidate, believing that the educa. tional interest of our county ought not to be controlled by party politics.

In accordance, therefore, with the action of the teachers' institute my name will be submitted alike to the different conventions for their ratification. L. L. IIARTMAN. GROCERY Wholesale dealers in Groceries and Liquors.
