Masonic Honors. CHICAGO, Jan. men are giyen the thirty-third degree of Masonry and rarely is a special conclave called in order to give: it to one man. That honor was bestowed on Hon. Thos.

W. Palmer. president of the World's Columbian commission. On the 19th day of Febuary, 1861, Charles Robinson was sworn in as the first governor of Kansas. The state was admitted on the 29th of January, the same year.

No state in the Union has cut such a wide swath in stale tory as Kansas, and its very name 18 Legion in almost every household in the country. Ad Astra per Aspera, its motto, is known to everyschool child in Kansas and its meaning is not foreign to the most illiterate of Kansas pupils. So it 18 fitting on that day, the 29th of January, that the flag of our country, the flag of freedom, typical of the very history of our state, should be fltted to the mast and hoisted to the breeze over every school house in the land upon that occasion. It is fitting that the youth of our state should shout songs of joy upon the birth of a state that has been so historical and more especially as that of their homes. The pupils of our public schools held exercises at Williams Hall in the evening.

The selections were recitations, orations, essays, and songs. The following pupils took part: Leona Beach, Willie Brown, Allie Cox, C. W. Dunakin, Grace Mills, Nellie McCaslin, Fred Thomas, Minnie Herod, Brook Hickey, Sylvia McCaslin, Blanche Sinnamon, Birdie Daniels, Walter Shirley, Ninon Bartl, Maude Herod, and Agnes Lapham. It would be a great injustice to discriminate as to which pupil bore his or her honors the best; it was all best.

It was good, exceedingly good, and reflects great credit upon the pupils and upon the teachers. Please don't forget the teachers. The exercises were opened by an appropriate prayer by Rev. J. S.

Reed and closed with the benediction by Rey. J. H. Price. Thus passes one more year over the history of our lives and our state.
