BERKEY, Dealer in DRY GOODS, Notions, Furnishing Goods, Fancy and Staple Groceries, Closing out Shoes at Cost. A few days Binee a gentleman was at Hunnewell on business nd while in the town took occasion to enquire in regard to Geuda Springs. lie was carelessly told by some of the bright and 8hining(?) lights of that town that Geuda SDrines existed onlv in name, that there was a tumbled down hotel there and also a few Bprings, but that it was no town at all. The same gentlemen went through Geuda on the Southwestern the other day and in passing glanced out of the car window. He saw the remains of the old Summit house and a couple of other buildings and naturally inferred that that was all there was of Geuda Springs.

Imag- ine however his surprise when he in company with a friend drove over from Ashton last Thursday evening. This incident again causes us to remark that the depot ought to be nearer the town or vice versa. Just why those poor miserable lop eared nonenities from Hunnewell gave Geuda such an elegant send off, we know not. Doubt less tuo the poor half civilized creat ures really know no better and we ought to forgive them. We will bet a sixpence, not three of the descendants of Ananias comprising Hunnewell's population, knows that there has been a Spanish-American war.

"One turn. bled down hotel." Why you should have told a good one while you were at it, as in saying that you hit the truth for once in your life. Gewia ha3 one tumbled down hotel and also five which are not tumbled down. If that "shining light" from Hunnewell who made the assertion will consent we'll offer to pay his expenses to come to Geuda and by the aid of a couple of vapor baths will try and com some of the. hay seed from his hair.

A New Scheme. A movement is on foot to try and in terest Wichita capitalists to put in an electric line from Oxford to the Springs. Such a scheme if carried out would give us virtually a straight connection with Wichita and other points north. The greatest thing which could happen to ueuaa wouia oe to nave such a line completed. Wichita, Newton and a few other joining citie" would support Geuda through the summer sea son.

Let the lake be put in and have train run to make the trip on Sundays and our patronage would increase a hundred fold, and then such a line as the one proposed would without the least shadow of a doubt be a good pay ing investment. But little if any grad ing would be necessary and when completed would surely prove a veritable godsend to our town. It has also been suggested if it be that outside parties could not be induced to take hold of the scheme to build the line by subscription. There is no one but who will admit that such a move would mean everything for Geuda. Property would advance and all who own real estate would be the gainers.

As is al ways the case it hard work to take a place after it once starts on the down hill path and effect a great change in a short time but in the case of Geuda, we hardly think but, that once a start is made in the right direction the town will surprise us all. November Weather Report. The past month was clearer, cooler and calmer than the average Novembers, only eight Novembers in the past thirty years being cooler. There were seventeen days that the mercury fell below freezing point. The depth of snow falling during the month was two and three-fourths inches.

Rain fall, including melted snow was 147 in. A trifle over 38 percent of the month was cloudy. The average temperature was 38.95 degrees. The Revival meeting-. The revival meeting conducted last week will continue this week also.

Rev Funk is preaching some masterly sermons to large crowds and it is to be deplored that more interest is not tak en in the work. There should be more unity, more working together. A minister cannot accomplish everything. He must have assistance to cheer him and also to lighten his Money Lou. G.

W. Haugham lost a pocket book Monday evening, containing $140. Mr Hougham offers a reward of $25 for its return. Does advertising pay? This is the question asked time and again by merchants, thinking that in advertising with a local paper they are doing the publisher, not themselves a favor. Let us look at one case to Bee what advertising haB done.

Ten years ago Sears 5 in a Bmall way to do a mail order business in general merchandise, supply ing the farmers and people in small towns with such goods as they needed. Today this same firm occupy an entire block in Chicago, employing 900 people with easily 700,000 customers. Their postage amounts to $400 per day. They issue a catalogue of 1 100 pages contain- ing over 75,000 different articles. It took forty car loads of white paper to print it and the amount of costage to 6end same to to their customers was over $100,000.

The firm say that their entire success came from their adver tising, patronizing the country papers as a rule. Certain it is merchants, if Sears. Roebuck Co. can make Buch a wonderful showing by judicious adver tising will certainly pay you. A Prediction.

One of our enterprising townsmen had a dream the other night. In fancy he saw Geuda one year hence. We give his vision verbatim. Below are a few items that will like ly be read in the Nbws columns next summer. Many new faces in town this week.

How do you like the Daily News? Sanitarium and Bath House are run ning day and night. The new pavillion over the Springs is a daisy. The Motor lin to Wichita via Ox ford runs four trips daily. The corner lot north of the old city restaurant sold for $5,000 yesterday. We notice many business men from Wellington, Wichita, Hutchinson, Winfield, Newton and many other cities are recuperating at the Springs.

The lake is full to overflowing, she is a thing of beauty and a joy forever, Surf batheiog in the lake is the latest fad. Shaw's Orchestra of Wichita will give a concert at the Springs Pavillian all next week, free. We are to have two new church edi fices. The new Opera House will be opened next week to the public. Arkansas City will follow suit with a New Motor line to this place this fall.

Geuda boasts of the best water sup ply from the lake with the least ex- pence of any city in the state. Blackwell O. T. talks of motoring this way, we are surely in the swim. The bridge over Salt Creek is serving the motor road.

The farmers see a vast difference in marketing their produce since the boom struck Geuda. Notice the ad in another column of the new Wholesale Grocery House, Smart Alac Sc Co late of St Louis. The old Royal Buss line has given way to the new Electric Street Railway which operates from the old Frisco depot in the south part of town, down 2nd Street to corner of Oak and Coun ty Street thence north to Dewey Park Springs Pavillian and Bath House on Lake Ave. to Motor Depot on North Side. Who would have thought one year ago that Geuda would have a population of 5,000 people.

Three railroads, Churches, 3 Banks, 2 Wholesale houses, 15 Hotels, 8 Bath Houses, 3 Newspapers and 30 other houses representing business necessary to make a great and fashionable resort- Will wonder never cease? In talk ing with some geological experts we understand an effort will be made soon to prospect for natural gas. Surface indication assure that the much saught for gas exists at no great depth, we say turn on the gas. Gkddaite. Geuda Church Directory M. E.
