Obinger, J. X. Cooper. The arrest of D. F.

Hall and J. H. Preston aud the tines imposed upon each of them by the police court of this city has created much indiguatiou among our citiueus. Let law and er-der rule we Bay and urge, but this is a free country and men should be per mitted to 8ottlc their busiuosa affairs, and even talk a little loud if hecessary in order to do so, without laying them selves liable to the unpleasantness of arrest or the costliness of a fine. The unanimous feeling that in this case there was no cause for action what ever, wtietlier Judge Kice to blame or the Marshal we do not take the responsibility of saying, but we do say a great wrong has been doue.

There are a few reasons why ovory niau should support his homo paper, some of which may be referred to, viz:" It advertises your towu, oouuty and towuships records the local aews of your immediate viciulty, all tho legal notices, marriages, deaths, church Bud chool itetas, ratea of taxes, and everything of importance to you and your faniilv directly. A tood local paper ia a county is just as necessary as our public schools. It is an index of the character and enterprise of the people where it is pub lished. It is true you may bo able to get a laree city weekly paper, filled with long accounts of murders, scan dal cases, failures of large capitalists lovo stories, reports of base ball clubs and news from Lgyptar.d Hongkong for the same money or less than you pay for tho local paper of your com unity, but the matter contained in a foreign uewspaper cannot and does not aid you a particle in any respect tt tells you nothing about what is go ing on iu yonr owu county, it don help along your Bchools and your churches, it says nothing to enlighten you on your own local interests. It has no interest in you whatever only simply to take your money and give you the routine ot news above men tionedi Stand by your home paper and it Will staiid by you.

A good editor looks to tho boBt interests of those who extend to him their- sup port. It is hisbuBiness. It is his duty. JiX. "Arkansas City Victorious." Under the above title the notenccphalous local ot the sheet called the Arkansaw City Travtler takes occasion to get on ma usuat amount ot falsehoods in last wesk's issue of that rag.

We were a closo observer of tho match game of ball alluded to, and there was clearly nothing In the game out cf which the Actives could claim any fair victory. There was beyond all doubt a put up job by some of the side-strikers of the Actives to beat the game unfairly. One of the knowing ones gave it away eariy in the morning by advising hi outside friends not to bet on the game, saying that the Actives had the umpire and that he would give them the game wheth er they won it on not, which he did The talley as given showa upon its face an unreasonable score, and all who saw the game know (hat the de cisions of the umpire were such as to invariably favor the Actives. If not why did they refuseto have referee in the game. The pitcher that thev claim was Imported from Oxford ii a country boy who now lives, and has for a long time lived out in the coun try about four miles from Geuda, and oecause no is not only a gentleman but a much better ball player than happens to belong to tho Actives nine the Travtler dude must necessarily ten Borne no aoout mm.

COHnKSPONDXNCE. Your correspondent left Geudit Springs a fow (lavs ago in the interest of the News. We were well pleased with the prospect of the various kiuds of Crops which we saw. Tho wheat crop is fair, yet not so good as Was hoped.

Tho oat crop is splendid, we think we never saw it better. The eorn, though greatly iu need of rain, looks promising. After a ride of five miles we came across our old friend R. H. Jamison, whom we found busy stacking his oats, lie kindly showed us his crop of corn of which he may well be proud, aud informed ns that the millet is good.

Mr. Jamison is one of Walton's farmers who loves home reading aud ordered a copy of the News. We next drew rein at Mr. Peter Hollenbeck's where we partook of a splendid dinner spread by his estimable wile. Mri Hollenbeck came from Winfield to this county two years ago, having bought a quarter section adjoining the State line, most of which he now has in cultivation.

He also has about 6,000 acres of pasture fenced just across the line in the Territory. Mr. II. expects to add substantial improvements to his farm this fall in the way of buildings. On our homeward route we mado a short call on Mr.

A. M. McMillin, one of Bitter Creek's thrifty young farmers. Mr. M.

is beautifully located on his new one mile west of the eounty line. The News will visit him regularly. We next called upon Si Black-man, whom we fontrd in his nsual good spirits. Re has one of the nicest laying farms in Bout hern Kansas, enclosed by a good growth hedge, a fine house and good orchard containing the several varieties of fruit in abundance. He has sixty acres of corn which we think will compete with nv Iff the State.

Mr. B. came from Ohio ia '77 and settled on this farm which, at that time was a wild waste of prairie. as mo noor was getting iste we returned to Geuda well pleased with our trip. We find the News appreci ated by au wan wtom we have, talked.
