A Washington stts fnc Presid.T.t desk-e the -statement that he wiil pru his Bctnination, irrespective cf puaMftle. ia Xovetnler, asd declares ha(t te never requested i and that the succ-ss of the Republi- e.m p.irty, whoever its presidential candi- date niav be, is his earnest desire, THE COXTKST. The contest Tor county scat is rapidly drawing to a doer, and perhaps many of our people are thankful for it. Those of mr citizons who are urging the claims of Osage Mission, and even the people of that town itself, certainly commend themselves more to a reflecting puolic, for the manner itt which they present their claims, than do those of Erie; and it may well be a subject of inquiry ith a person who desires to come to a ist conclusion, whether persons pressing its claims with much personal bitterness nud animosity, is worthy of the confidence and respect of the community, livery conceivable story i invented, magnified ami misrepresented. Unjust and untruthful insinuations and assertions are made, and even the motives of those anxious to relieve the necessities of our people, tire impugned, to make votes for Erie.

We believe the better judgment of our people ill be r.gainst such a course, and that rising above the jietty spite of individuals who elevate themselves by false fliv.l ungenerous statements, Ihey will, by their sotes, on Tuesday ueM, refuse to endorse any place supported by such instrumentalities. Osage Mission, by its enterprise thus far, its liberality, the substantial character of its inhabitants, its fairness in the presentation of its claims, and its position, dial Unges a critical comparison with the citizens and advocates of Erie. We leave the irsue with the voters of the county, believing that they will subserve their interests. Let them determine in their minds the establishment of the county scat in a place hich will forever put to an cud this and demoralizing clement. Permanent and substantial investments will never be made in our county so long as this juestioii is not settled.

We believe that Osage Mission presents the only sure chance tor a final settlement of this element, and the realization of our best hopes. rai K13E FOB KANSAS EDITORS. The Fort Scott Monitor suggests that the Editorial Convention be held during the hitter part of June, or early in July, as three editor (Voiw our State are delegates to the Philadelphia Convention, which assembles June 5th. The Ottaw a Journal thinks it would be a good idea to get up a Kansas editorial excursion to Philadelphia, and thus give all the itemizcrs of the State an opportunity to enjoy a short season of relaxation. We are in favor of this We know yearly very editor in the itale can be counted in provided, of eor.rse.that they are "deadheaded" through and back for they will never be enabled to perform the journey in any other way.

Kow brethem of the press agitate the matter, and let us sec if we cannot have a fr.ee ride to the city of Brotherly Love. Count us in; and, by-tho-way, wouldn't it lie a good idea to appoint a strong on arrangements as soon as possible, to see what can be done toward carrying the above suggestions into edict PKKFiaicis The only cry or argument we hear as ad 1 i 1. 1 1 i i wt.siJijs, is 1110 enoei. uui, Sliouiu ilic get he county seat, -we can move it again in a year or two while if Mission keeps it, she will vote bonds enough to build a court house and jail, thus keeping it C.r all time. The idea is absurd that is admitting that Eric township has not credit nor wherewith to give the bonds required.

But enough of that. We can only say, that, if we can move it fiom Erie at some-future time, the same contest will be the result. Mission ill always'be a point, and Erie if she finds she can't be a point on 11 fair showing and vote ill turn to circulating the report throughout the county that we, or other places, have drawn off in ker favor; or that we have thtcc or four tars of railroad bauds coming, to Swell the yanks of our voters; or, by playing some milroad scheme two ways as, for instance, narrow-gauge between New Chicago and Eric, and one between Thayer and Erie, to the citizens of each place secretly, to the injury of the other.) All of hich the people of this township know she has done in the pn6t and as we have no way of judging the future but by the past, we may con sider, and safely too, that if Eiie can not get in the field by "hook," she will by "crook," and then (he same fight that is jmw being made will again be re-enacted, and the snmc exnensc bo incurred on the Deak I am glad to lcuin that your valcmMe pn- per mis taken a deciueu otuuil Bjruinst tlic rem owl of the county seat. Over" we consider it premature, end gotten up iu the i.i.uj Chicago and Eric It will put a large p'ense upon the county for nothing because I believe it will be impossible at thus tune 1 ts remove the county scat fr-wil Osage Mis- to sion. A large number of our people arc op- posed to the removal, and, on account of the large, increase of taxes, will vote to have it where it now is.

A few since, one of the '-old guard from Erie, was here among our citizens, blo- viating considerably about having secured i the large influence of some of the citizens of New Chicago for Erie, and expressed the belief that Tioga, township would give a good majority for that place. Well, now, I hope merchant and business men of New Chicago are not so blind to their own interests and prosperity, as to aid by their votes, in building up a commercial rival that will cut of the beet and most raluti'Je trade tliat New Chicago haa. I mean all of our township aiid that territory lying cast of he cosbo. i It is very ell-known that our farmers do all of their trading and purchasing at Xew Chicago; it is equally well-known that if the seat is located at Erie, that it will be the means of building up a rival to Xew Chicago that Kill talcs her mod luerniiee trade. Xew Chicago and Tioga have little else to commend them to the public than their commercial advantages; cut these off on all sides by aspiring rivals, arid, notwithstanding that these two towns arc at a railway junction; have one road "der contract, and a narrow gouge" (judging from the character of the men running it) assured, it will become a dead town.

Mark this prediction. It appears to me as though it was to the interest of any town to build up a rival if it has to be done as far mcay as possi'M. For instance, I was at Osage Mission just before the first vote, and I am satisfied that had the fight come between Erie and New-Chicago, the Mission would have gone solid for New Chicago. And that is the principle that actuates most of our people. We ill give a very respectable vote for Osage Mission, ami hope that our nearest neighbors ill second our efforts to avoid expense until the county becomes more settled, and the people more able to pay excts-sire Yours, Qi id.

The usual price for votes and influence promised by the advocates of Erie, is now one hundred and Jiffy dollars Think of that and then reflect whether or not you will vote for a town that offers inducements to men, to prostitute themselves before the eyes of the people mid the law. One of the most conspicuous of the carpet btuj who flourished ill North Carolina under Ilolden's administration has come to giicf. This is Col. Andrew' Jack- son Jones, who was the President of the Western North Carolina Railroad, and a prominent politician. Soon after he was I iippointcdPresident of the railroad company I he visited New York, where he became well known among the bankers that is, the fa- to bankers.

Ho has just been convicted of embezzling the funds of the railroad, and sentenced to pay a fine of $10,000, with one year's imprisonment in the penitentiary. Having failed in an attempt to procure a new trial in the court in which he was convicted, Jones has appealed to the Supreme Court in the hope of evading punishment. As an arrangement for locating the county seat at Erie, it is said that the Mission intends saddling the bonds for payment of her two iron bridges over the Neosho, upon the count'. How silly and absurd such an assertion is. That place can no more throw her obligations on the county than any private citizen can saddle his or her obligations upon the county for payment.

The bill introduced in the United States Senate by Mr. Johnson of Virginia, "to provide an adequate supply of circulating medium to the States needing it," is a proposition for the United States to go into the business of lending money on real estate security and will not be likely to be received with favor. The bill provides that on tho application of the Governor of any State, which, has not been furnished with National bank circulation to the extent of eight dollars for each inhabitant, the Secretary of the Treasury shall supo'y currency to make up the deficiency, to be by pledge of real estate of value in each case 01-double the amount of circulating medium or currency furnished interest to be paid on these loans at the rate of five per cent, per annum. The National Government is likely to have enough to do for some timo to come in providing for its own wants without assuming the work of furnishing the States with money. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.

IVolic-e. M. J. Jenkins, ill lake notice, that on the Till day of March, A. D.

1873, C. E. Dunham, a JusliM of the peace, in and for Tioga Township, Neosho county, Kansas, Issued his order of attachment, for and to cover costs not exceeding f.jO.OO against him, in favor of A. L. Doniburgh, and that said cause is set for hearing, at 10 o'clock, a.

Hill. Sheriff of Neosho county, Kansas, do hereby proclaim and make known to the qualified electors of said comity, that an election will be held In each Township, on Tuesday, the 2d day of April, A. 1878, for the election of tho following Towqshlp officers, to-wlt: One Trustee, one Clerk, ono Treasurer, one Koad Overseer for each rond dlslrlot, two Constables, and to (111 any vacancy in the iMcaof Justice- of the Pence. The jioJIr will open at 8 o'clock, a. and closo at 6 o'clock, r.

m. Olven under my al tin city of Osags Mission, this liilh day of March, A. i. J. 11.

Jill Ch'-illfor Si-osho county, Kan. I I I i I i Osage propose. If the rv-; pic locate the countv scut at plucv, to ct rt a building and lior.utc It to tin euro; tUJt common the purpose of jail and offices; the title to 1 be nr. .1 oi ihi iti i uc totiut Forever. Thi will l.e annual savnitg to the ccanty cf at least and the taxpayers will have tlnit much ltwa a burden to hear.

Eric imposes to donate a tuiH- j.iug -t -the comity for office purposes it cannot 1h used for a jail so us the coun cil t.vre; provided, also, tuat it is voted to that place. The difference, is very perceptible, the one proposes to give building especially adapted to the purpose for which it is do nated, hile the other simply proposes to lo'tc the rent. The people are not to be up- peascd by such sugar plums. We wonder how much was realized from the $16,000 in bonds voted by the city of Erie, ostensibly to aid the narrow "gouge" swindle, but really to help Erie to offer the collateral to raise funds for the county seat fiasco? Will some one who knows give us the desired information? TIOGA, Deab Traxscsipt I see by certain notes and writings that Erie proposes to give her school house for a court house, provided the county seat shall be located there, free of charge, and further represents through the mouth-pieces hom she has secured, to donate it in fee simple; or, in other words, to make a good and sufficient warranty deed to the same. To sny that such is the fact, would make bad worse.

As she claims, through her advocates, ehe only donates the house to the county so long as it is used for county seat purposes, and no longer. For the sake of argument, we will admit that she donates free of charge, in fee simple, or on conditions, the school building, a fact that every man knows to be impossible; but for the purpose of argument alone, admit it to be so can not the connty.if Erie gets the county seat, (should the building be considered at any time inconvenient for county purposes,) in itself sell the same and appropriate the proceeds tswards erecting a building more suitable for court house and county purposes. Such is the undeniable fact, and such would any court of law determine, that so long as proceeds of the saie of the premises, in case of necessity or convenience, facilities, be applied to fitting up others for the same purpose, that would amount to using the house for county scat purposes. And again, if the building is donated s.ir county scat purpose, to revert back to the district as a school house, where is the fee simple or warranty deed Any deed with a condition, cannot be fee simple or warranty, as fee simple and warrauty deeds arc contracts in which there are no conditions precedent upon which the grant remains; and consequently Erie can't pull the wool over the eyes of all of us. Yours for the Mission, Jack.

Wii.l some one who is acquainted with the facts, inform us bow many of the men who are so ardently supporting Erie for county seat, are doing so because they have deeds to town lots in Erie, or because they have onlv contracts for deeds Opinions of the Press. A man who would cheat a printer would steal a meeting-house and rob a churchyard. If he had a soul, ten thousand of its size would have more room in a niusquito's eye than a bullfrog in the Pacific Ocean.
