2. WALTON, HARVEY COUNTY, KANSAS, THURSDAY DECEMBER 15, 1887. NO. 36. GAS DISCOVEREDI Mr.

D. Shomber informed us this morning that gas had been discovered in large quantities 011 the old L. L. Harris place, now owned by a )ir. Shepler, nine miles northeast of Walton, yesterday afternoon.

The gas was discovered while boring in an old well for water, at a depth of 1254 feet. The matchinery WAR hoisted and the well covered up so the gas could not escape except through a small aperture where' gas pipe iras 'inserted. A niatel was lighted and placed at the opening of the pipe, when an explosion took place that could be heard great distance and which knocked the covering of the well and the bf fifteen or twenty feet. man touching the match a not the first time gas has been discovered in this vicinity, but it is by far the stongest find. H. M. Walt and family, of Newton, are in town to-day. Teachers, call at this office for monthly report blanks. Ladies and Gents underware at jowest prices at MALLISTER's, Farmers predict a good crop year the coming season.

C. C. RADABAUGH. A society composed of gentleman born in the New England states has been organized at Newton. Sond the Walton paper to friend in the east one year 88 Christmas present.

The price of corn has an upward tendency. Farmers would do well to held their grain a few months. All accounts running over 60 days must be paid at once in cash or by note. C. C.

He is a gentleman, and gets up a nice paper. Call County (Neb.) News. Mrs. Hunt, mother, of John Hunt. died this morning at 4:30 o'clock of pneumonia.

Mrs. Hunt was well up in age but has been seriously ill but a short time. Funeral will be held to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock. Through the agency of D. P.

Stoner Mr. Wm. H. Powell of west 11th street, traded yesterday, his residence property and four lots on a 160 acre farm within six miles of Peabody-Consideration, $5,000 on each side. -Republican, (Wed.) Miss Lizzie Coult, at the BeeHive Book Store, has the most attractive and useful assortment of Holiday goods to be found in Newton.

She will make a grand display of these goods on Saturday the 17th. Glenn Woods is wielding the birch in the Mitchell district, south of town, in the absence of L. H.
