1. Friction la greatly Influenced by tbe smoothuow or roughness, lmrdnoNs or softnoNs, of tho surfaces rubbing against eticli other. 2. It li In proportion to tho prossuro or load; Unit Is, a doublo pressure will protluco a double amount of friction, and io of any other proportionate In-croupe of tlio load. 8.

Tho friction does not depend upon tho extent of aurfaco, tho weight of body remaining tho sumo. 4. Tho friction Is greater after tho bodies hnvo bcou allowed to remain some timo at rest, in contact with each other, than when they arc first so placed; as, for example, a wheel turning upon gudgeons will rcqulro a greater weight to start it after remaining some hours at rest than it would at first The causo of, this appears to bo that tho ininuto nsjierlties which exist even upon tho smoothest bodies gradually sink into tho oposlto spaces, and thus hold upon each other It is for the samo reason that a greater forco Is required to sot a body in motion than to keep it in motion. If about one-third the amount of a weight bo requirod to move that weight along in tho first instance, ono fourth will suffice to keep it in motion. 6.

The friction of axles does not de-pond upon their velocity; thus, a railroad car traveling at tho ratoof twenty miles an hour will not havo been retarded by friction moro than another which travels only ten miles in that timo. It appears, therefore, from tho last three laws that tho amount of friction is as the pressure directly, without regard to surface, timo or velocity. 6. Friction is greatly diminished by unguents, and this diminution is as tho nature of tho unguents, without reference to the substances moving over them. Tho kind of unguent which ought to bo employed depends principally upon tho load; it ought to sufllco just to prevent the bodies from coming in contact with each other.

The lighter the weight, therefore, tho finer and more fluid the unguent should be, nnd vico vorsa. Case, St.DenUUotd, RIOTING STRIKERS. Massachusetts Has a Hsmple of the Rioting Mania. BosTOHt Fob. 21. A serious riot occurred In East Cambridgo yesterday afternoon aa a result of the rocont street car tie-up.

Hhortly afternoon a large crowd of strikers and tbolr sympathizers gathered on Muin street. Cambridgeport, and as the various cars of the Cambridge line passed, the conductors and drivers were hooted as scabs." At p. there was a great mob at tbe junction of tho Webster street lino with that on Main street, and as a car turned into Webster ovonue the mob began hurling bricks and atones at tho car and its occupants. By the timetho car got through the Crowd it was a complete wreck. Each succeeding car was similarly treated until no less than Ave cars had been badly damaged.

Then tho police wcro telephoned for and within twenty minutes a largo force of oOlcers appeared on the scone. The mob by this timo had been worked up to a high degree of excitement, and when the officers attempted to disperse the'erowd thoy met with a determined resistance. Bricks and stonos were thrown at the police and many of tho offlcials were injured. The police then charged the mob with drawn revolvers, and It instantly scattered in all directions. About a dozen of the strikers were arrested and convpyed to tho police station.

A little later the mob assembled again furthor down tho avenue and wrecked another car. Tho police, reinforced by a mounted squad, now charged the crowd on the "double quick," and tbo mob dispersed, after discharging a volley of bricks at the police. These missiles took effect in at least a dozen cases, and as many officers were more or less seriously Injured. Another lot of prisoners was takon, and tho station houses wore flllod with those arrosted. None of those injured were thought to be fatally hurt.

There was no further trouble after tho last effective dispersion of tbo mob. In South Boston there were a few minor disturbances botween individual strikers and "scabs" and a number on both sides were arrested, but the cars of the company were not Interfered with. In this section both sides are firm and tho outcome Is still uncertain. i AN INEVITABLE CONFLICT. Strikers Owing Double Allegiance Find Themselves In a Quandary.

Pittsburgh, Feb. 19. A strike at the Junction Iron Works, Mingo, threatens to causa serious trouble between the Knights of Labor and Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers. The striker's are members of both organizations and a conflict of authority has arisen between tho lenders of the two powerful associations. The men struck for pay for tbe trne they were compelled to remain in the mill through breakage of the machinery, and tbe Amalgamated Association supported them in their demands.

Tho Knights of Labor opposod the strike and ordered a resumption of work, while the Amalgamated loaders forbid the men returning until the demands were conceded. William H. Bailey, of the general exooutlve board of the Knights oi Labor, and President Welho, of the Amalgamated Association, have had several conferences, but there are no indications of a settlement of the trouble. This Is regarded as the beginning of a fight in which a danger is threatened Identical with that now existing between the Knights and tho International Cigar-makers' Union: that the men must give up one or the other association. With the last few months there has been a special effort of both organizations to strengthen their membership among the iron and steel workers.

The Amalgamated Association has beon bringing in new lodges everywhere and have been especially successful among the steel workers. This increase in new members alone is said to now amount to about 4,000 men. Two now lodges were organized within a couple of days. One is at Terre Haute, and the other at Ben-wood, W. Va.
