FORD CITY KANSAS. HON. THOMAS Hon. Thomas (ioorge, of Wellington, was nominated on first ballot at Lamed on the He is a thorough Kiiiuw, a sinion pure democrat, an able and eloquent speaker, ami stands at the head of the legal profession in his district. In 1880 he a the democratic nominee for lieutenant governor and has ever been honored and respected by all who knew him, and will make things pretty lively in this district for Hon.

S. it. Peters. Tho Garden City Herald (republican) speaks as follows of him: A representative of the Herald this morning suiight an introduction to Hon. Thomas George, of Wellington, who was Tuesday nominated for congress by the democratic convention at Lamed.

During a pleasant interview Mr. George described his party in the district ho rei-reseuts as being in good shape, pretty well united, and with no local disturbing elements. Sumner county is doing well, and the country gererally in that part of the state is prosperous. As to cmps, corn is good, although wheat and oaU will be rather short. This is Mr.

George's first visit to Garden City. He came to have an opportunity of shaking hands with many old friends who Sumner and have settled here. lie was both surprised and pleased at the material evidence of our prosperity, and sneaks of the people he has met since his arrival here as true types of the western man wide-awake and full of energy. Mr. Geoigeisa gentleman of line appearance, larco and handsomely built, with au intelligent, open countenance, and he has a frank, prepossessing manner which in spite of his antagonistic political views, impressed us with the HARSH TIMBER CULTl'RE LAWS.

There is a pretty strong feeling among members of congress in favor of repenting some of our land laws. The underlying theory of tho homestead law is, that every citizen ought to have a home of his own; that citizens might to be land owners; that the peoplo ought to own tho country. The rapid destruction of our forests suggested the propriety of making other sources of lumber supitly, and the government undertook to encourage tree culture by giving lands to persons who would plant and cultivate trees in a portion of them. That was the origin of the timber culture A great deal of land has been iken under the provision of that law, but great complaint is made that frauds are continually practiced upon tho government by persons who want the land for speculative purposes and care nothing about going furtlier than the mere forms of the law. It is claimed by objectors that unworthy persons thus get possession o' the public lands to the injury of honest people who would like to make homes out of There is, doubtless good ground for these complaints, but it is not so clear that the best remedy is to repeal the law.

The intention of the law is good and universally commended. Aside from all commercial consideration, a fresh growth of trees would have many advantages. So important is the subject in itself that congress should make haste slowly in the proposition to repeal. Is that the best thing to do? Then what will be substituted? Is it proposed to abandon the theory of forest tree planting on the plains? Will the government withdraw all encouragement in that direction and leave the citizens to their own individual tastes as to forestry? There ought to be some better way devised before this law is repealed. If it is impossible to enforce the existing statute, it must be because of some weakness in the framework of the law; for nobody is oppose to the spirit of the enactment.

It may be that the wording of this act can be amended so us to make it more effective. If not, then et another method of effecting tho object sought be adopted, before the law is repealed, to the end that all encourage" ment be given to the growth of trees in the west. lb SONS.
