Si 1 ii 1 For the Arkansas Valley Generally, Ford County Especially, and the Town of Ford Particularly. VOL. 8. NO. 24 FORD, FORD COUNTY, KANSAS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1917 11 a If: "'i The Ford State Bank.

Capital, $20,000 nothingness. It was very late before the last sound of laughter was heard and the last blaze of the fire disappeared, when the bunch settled down on the ground to sleep. It was a little later that the gentle drip of rain aroused the camp and caused the blankets to be drawn a little higher. The campers were game and stayed with it and the rain, finding that it couldn't run them out, decided to let them sleep. hr the morning it was with regret that the outfits were packed and "Camp Bide a-Wee" was deserted.

The last act was a fine up before the camera. wheel machine, driving through the two rear wheels and steering through the front ones. It uses a four-cylin-der engine, a multiple-disk clutch, a three-speed and reverse gearset, a worm driven rear axle and is partic ulary conspicuous in the tractor field in that everything is enclosed, which is much at variance with much tractor design today. It starts on gasoline and burns kerosene. At present no price is announced, but from the construction it is seem that the machine will not be an abnormally low-priced job.

That expense is not spared is shown by the very general use of the finest annular ball bearings as well as alloy steels. The aim of Henry Ford has been to build a good serviceable machine, a handy type as well, in that it can turn in a circle witfi a radius of 21 ft, and orks with a draw-bar pull of 1,5000 pounds. This makes it a two-plow machine for working on intermediate -speed of 2.7m.p.h. It is claimed to have a 25 per cent reserve power when when working at this' standard. The machine has a high speed of 2.83 m.p.h..

From A "Shell Hauler" Howard Gotschall, one of the Ford boys who enlisted in the truck company organized it Dodge City and who is now in camp on Long Island with the division which is soon to be sent across the water, writes as follows to a friend in Ford: "I will try and write you a few lines to let you know that I am still on earth. We are camped on Long Island, New York. B. SMITH, Mayor. ROSS BENTLEY, City Clerk. Ford Annoances New Tractor The tractor built by Henry Ford and his son Edsel and which is no ready for production represents many original features in farm tractor engineering and gives an indica-tion of what points of design the motor car industry may carry into the tractor field. Many of the principles Ford has championed in the motor car field are seen in the, tractor, notably that of lightweight, the tractor scaling at 2,500 pounds where as tractor weighs with few exceptions average double that much.

Design is largely responsible for this low weight in that many parts used in other tractors ive been eliminated; thus there is.no frame because the motor, gearbox, and rear axle bolt one to the other, forming a bridge construction which takes the place of the frame. The radiator bolts to the engine so that necessary connecting pipes and tubing are el-. iminated; there is no water pump; alloy steels are used through many parts, giving lighter constructions, and lastly the design in whidh relatively small driving wheels are used results in larfte weight reductions: The rear wheels are but 42 in. in diameter and the front wheels 28 in. Many tractors have 60 in.

and larger wheels. In a word the Ford is a four- I Camping Party Mrs. Stuart and her Sunday School class, with the women school teachers as guests, spent a jolly night at and creek Friday. They went in time for a campfire supper and came back to town after breakfast Saturday. Most of the members of the party were dressed in unionalls.

All were in proper garb for sport and all entered into the fun with whole heart-edness. The good sports who were so fortunate as to remember to take bathing suits enjoyed plunges in the evening and early morning. The meals were of the kind that only campers know about. In the evening the traditional camp fire blazed and crackled and the campers lay around the flames and told the old stories and sang the old songs. Late in the eyening the camp was invaded by a mere man, who would have found himself in very unfortunate circumstances if he had not come armed with marshmallows, which wereoasted to a fluffy brown Binding Twine 20c lb at Binding Twine 20c lb at Equity: i 9 To Play Troop The For3 High Sehool team will play its first football game of the season tomorrow afternoon, when they meet an eleven picked from the Cavalry at Dodge City.

The home boys have done, some good practice since school opened and are making a good showing, but they are going up against a team of veteran football men who have a big advantage in weight, and Ford will need to use every trick in the box to get their name on the right side of the score card.
