The Two Sides of it. There was a girl who always said Her fate was very hard; From the one thing she wanted most She always was debarred. There always was a cloudly spot Somewhere within her sky; Nothing was ever quite just right, She used to say, and sigh. And yet her sister, strange to say, Whose lot was quite the same, Found something pleasant for herself In every day that came. Of course, things tangle up sometime.

For just a little while; But nothing ever stayed all wrong, She used to say, and smile. So one girl sighed and one girlsmilei Though all their lives together. It didn't come from luck or fate, From clear or cloudy weather. The reason lay within their hearts. And colored all outside; Onecliose to hope, and one to mope.

And so they smiled and sighed. Farming World. President Teddy. He is just one of us. Capable, clever, Proving I'luiibiis urn forever, fie is a mutcii for lin Willie and Kcid-e: He can do lots of things President Tedd.

Of torpedo boats Fiance has 238, Germany 105, Italy 101, Great Britain 90, Russia 82, Japan 81 and the United States 27. In torpedo boat destroyers Russia leads with though it must be acknowledged that so far as those sent to the Pacific were concerned they did not destroy very much.

Germany has 37, France 31, Great Britain 2(1, Japan 22 the United States 16 and Italy 11. As in torpedo boats, so with submarines, France leads this time with 37 to 13 for Russia, 11 for Japan, 9 for Great Britain, 8 for the United States, and 1 each for Germany and Italy. In the matter of coast defense vessels France leads with 17, Germany 10 tlf United States 12, Russia 7, Great Britain 6, Japan 5 and Italy 1. A study of these statistics serves to emphasize two things one the great strength of Great Britain, the other the fact that in the American programme for construction the smaller boats, of the torpedo class, seem to have been in a sense over-looked. However, with the experience of the war in the Far East before them, Allert T.

Isaacson was born at Canyon Falls, July 2lst 1874, came to McPherson in 1884 with Iris parents, was confirmed inthe Lutheran church in his Kith year by Rev. Wick-strand, by whom he was considered a very bright boy. lie was well and favorably known by a large circle of friends in this city and county. He was a regularly qualified pharmacist and later graduated in St. Louis Medical College.

He practiced medicine at Assaria and Kackely in this state, from 1900 to 1902. He gave up the practice on account of poor health. During the following two years he was with Dr. Matchette of this city. He was very successful in his work there and was well liked by all who came in contact with him.

He was weakly from his infancy and was not able to make the reputation in life which he could have otherwise done with good health. A little over a year ago he took a position as a traveling man thinking that it might be better for his health. He was never discouraged While he had to abandon many of his cherished plans he was always hopeful of a bright future. He came home the latter part of the week. He was not feeling well sewing at.

V. Bengston, Auc. H. Clark, Clerk. Why Japan Has Won.

Koimira attributes the victories of Japan to the justice of her Cause, the freedom of her public service from corruption, and simplicity and frugality in her mode of life. Upon the lavSt two points it will do America no serious injury to reflect. The Japanese not only know what is wholesome in habit and In diet, but they act upon their knowledge. They have none of that "common-sense" which in this country frequently means eating and drinking anything that gives an amusing feeling in the throat. The Baron's list is an impressive one, although others could be made.

On the military side might be mentioned subordination, fearlessness of death, and an unequaled gilt for secrecy. The Duke of Wellington once said: "It may be very right to give the British public this information, but if they choose to have it they ought to know the price they pay for it and theadvan-tages it gives to the eumy in all their operations England has always felt this handicap, and we may sometime feel it bitterly. In the Civil War the opposing sides suffered about equally from publicity, The lessons that Japan has taught are many. It will sullk'e for us if we strengthen ourselves at those places, suggested by the Baron's interview, where Japan's example is as valuable for peace as it' could be for war. -Collier's Weekly.

Those who are in favor of letting the "joints" of Kansas City, operate for the revenue derived from the present system of "tines," have a habit of defending the prat ice by declaring that the people of that city are convinced that the dramshops could not be eliminated at any rate, so they want to make them pay. There is a more or less popular theory that if the present otlicers undertook to close these unlawful saloonkeeper This looks like a most degrading estimate of the "average man" in Kansas City, Kan. But it is a false estimate just the same.

Saloons, drug stores or other places dispensing liquor, even in the stste of Kansas, cannot operate without a Federal license. The Federal law is explicit, and it is enforced to lie letter. It is seldom, Indeed, that a liquor dealer has the hardihood to defy Federal statutes requiring license, and when he does he is soon made to pay the penalty. Now the Federal courts draw heir juries from the same people who furnish the juries in state cases. If such juries are reliable in the one instance why should they not be reliable in the other? It is a mere subterfuge and a self-debasing subterfuge at that to say that Kansas City, juries would not convict a man who violates the state law.

The ofilcers. not the people, are most to blame. Of course the people are to blame if they make no effort to have the law enforced, but at present the fault lies mainly with he otlicers, who practically licenses the violation of the law by accepting stipulated "tines" in return for the privilege of operating. Again if these "lines" must be paid what is the penalty for l'ailur to pay them? If the police authorities can also compel the payment of "fines" it can also compel the closing of the saloons. The "joint" keepers acknowledge the power of the police to close them up when they submit to the exaction of KansasCity Star.

A warrant was issued this week at Marion for the arrest of a joint keeker at Florence, the evidence being furnished by parties from this county. The great auction sale of 500 quarters of land to take place at Richfield, Morton county beginning Sept 4th, is attracting the attention of some of our citizens. News comes from southern Kansas that a boy climed a corn stock to see how the sky and clouds looked and that now the stock is growing faster than the hoy can climb down.

The boy clear out of sight. Three men have taken the contract for cutting down the stock with axes to save the the. boy horri ble death by starving, but the stock grows so rapidly that they can't hit twice in the same place. The boy is living on green corn alone and already has thrown down over four bushels of cobs. Even if the corn holds out there is still the danger that the boy will reach a height where he will be frozen to death.

There is some talk of attempting his rescue with a ballon. An Alma woman rushed into the telegraph office the other day and informed the operator that her husband had gone to Chicago to get a banner for the Sunday school, but that she had forgotten to tell him the inscription and how large the banner was to be.
