Kansas Democrat, a Democrat in all kindsof political weather during sixty years, who, when ho was summoned before the Populist caucus to state his position, said: ''I come before you as a Democrat, and if I am elected to the senate of the United States it must be on the basis that I am a Democrat." In this election the Democracy of Kansas owes nothing to the People's party, for had there been the smallest chance for them to have elected one of theirown party Mr. Martin would not have been considered. But by reason of thb bitter figITt between the Republicans and Populists, whose forces were nearly equally divided, it resolved itself to a point where the five Democratic members held the fcahvice of power, and the Populifcts were first to appreciate the situation. It was then the Democrats reaped the fruits of the fusion victory and Judge Martin was granted the honors he so richly deseed. Kansas Democrats have in times past accepted defeat as a matter of course.

'His father was a native of South Carolina. While vet a young man he moved to Tennessee, where John Martin was born, November 12, 1833, being a native of Wilson county.

The boy received a good English education in the common schools near home, working at intervals on the farm. But all his aims and desires were for political life, and he was soon found divorced from mercantile pursuits, having been appointed chief clerk in the postoffice at Lebanon, Tenn. He had already commenced the study of law under the instructions of Judge Caruthers, professor of law in the university. In the wiuttrof 1854, in company with Major B. J.

Newson, who had materially assisted him in his law studies, the young man concluded to go tu Texas, but learning from Hon. Eush Elmore, who had just been appointed one of the United States district judges for the new territory, that he (Judge Elmore) intended to reside permanently in Kansas Hie two concluded to make that their crop every year, in 1891 naa anout need.
