I I I SUSPENDERS AND SUSPENSE What Uncle Sam Needs the Former For as Stated by a Halting Speaker. SUSPENSE A certain congressman from a mountain district, says the New York Sun, is troubled with a weak, squeaky, little voice, which sometimes fails in the midst of what might otherwise be an eloquent peroration. Recently, in addressing the house on a matter connected with tariff, he exclaimed: "Why, tariffs are like a pair of suspenders, sometimes tignt and sometimes loose; but Uncle Sam needs them just the sume, to keep up his-" Here the congressman's voice struck high treble note, flared and stopped. The house held its breath while he cleared his throat. suspense, which seemed to last for fully a minute, was more painful to the auditors than to the orator, for everyone was wondering whether he would say "trousers" or "pants," and some were even hoping that he might say "pantaloons." Even "overalls' 'would be better than "pants," for "pants" is most unparliamentary.

But all fears were without foundation. He cleared his throat with the greatest care, and in a death-like stillness resumed his oration where he had dropped it: "to keep up his running, expensesThe words followed were lost forever in a gale of laughter. SAVED CHILD'S LIFE. Remarkable Cure of Dropsy by Dodd's Kidney Pills. Sedgwick, July case of W.

S. Taylor's little son is looked upon by those interested in medical matters as one of the most wonderful on record. In this connection his father makes the following statement: "Last September, my little boy had Dropsy; his feet and limbs were swollen to such an extent that he could not walk nor put his shoes on. The treatment that the doctors were giving him seemed to do him no good and two or three people said his days were short, even the doctors, two of the best in the country told me he would not get better. I stopped their medicine and at once sent for Dodd's Kidney Pills.

gave him three Pills a day, one morning, noon and night for eight days; at the end of the eighth day the swelling was all gone, but to give the medicine justice, I gave him eleven more Pills. I used thirty Pills in all and he was entirely cured. I consider your medicine saved my child's life. When the thirty-five Pills were could run, dance and sing, whereas before he was an invalid in his mother's arms from morning until night." No Mister. Elihu Root, who has returned to the practice of law in New York city, has engaged a new office boy.

Said Mr. Root: "Who carried off my paper basket?" "It was Mr. said the boy. "'Who is Mr. Reilly?" asked Mr.

Root. "The janitor, An hour later Mr. Root asked: "Jimmie, who opened the window?" "Mr. Lantz, sir." "And who is Mr. Lantz?" "The window cleaner, sir." Mr.

Root wheeled about and looked at the boy. "See here. James," he said, "we call men by their first names here. We don't 'mister' them in this office. Do you understand?" "Yes, sir." In ten minutes the door opened and a small, shrill voice said: Nashville Bannerants to see you, "There's Elihu." All Aboard for Boston G.

2 53 OATS-No. 2 43 The Best Kansas News. Heavy Blow to Galena. A cloudburst at Galena caused a breakage in the Murphy flume across Short creek The flume drains or holds the water out of many of the best producing mining tracts in this district and was built by James Murphy at a cost of $15,000. Five of the best pieces of mining ground are flooded and some of the mines are full to the surface.

The K. T. road weakened the flume two years ago in building across it and it broke soon after, flooding the mines in June, 1902. Mr. Murphy brought suit for $40,000 damages and got $8,000, but he appealed the case and It is still pending.

The flood is looked on as a great disaster to Galena, as it will take all summer to drain the flooded district, thereby throwing hundreds of men out of employment. As soon as the water subsides a number of large pumps will be put in operation to drain the ground. Interesting Obituary. An interesting little story is recited in the obituary of W. B.

Pile, one of the pioneers of Chautauqua county, who died last week at the advanced age of 92 years. He was reared in Kentucky. In 1836 he married Hannah Pennington, who bore him 14 children and was his companion until 1885 when she died. In 1888, when 77 years of age, he married Miss Sarah Winans, who died in 1899. Two years later, when approaching his ninetieth birthday, 'he married Miss Harriet Van Leuven, who survives him.

He was an active member of the masonic fraternity for more than 70 years, and a faithful church member for more than 60 years. Modified His Opinion. Attorney General Coleman has modified his opinion regarding the defects in the legislative records of the two proposed amendments to the state constitution and the franchise amendment will go on the ballots. This amendment authorizes the governor to veto one item of an appropriation bill without turning it all down. Gen.

Coleman's changed opinion is the result of the discovery of an old supreme court decision in which Judge Brewer held that the prohibitory amendment was not invalidated because of the defects which were found in the record of the franchise amendment. A Week of Entertainment. At: a meeting of the directors of the Ottawa Chautauqua assembly Rev. H. W.

Chaffee, of Fredonia, was re-elected president; D. R. Shuey, of Emporia, first vice president; Dr. J. D.

Saved Money for Funeral. After Evan Nelson had died at the county poor farm in Chautauqua county, it was discovered that he had hoarded away $40 to be used in burying his body by the side of the two wives who had preceded him across the dark river.

It seems to have been his one pride that he should not be buried in the potter's field, and his one sentiment that his body should rest by the side of his dead wives. Ottawa Has Natural Gas. Ottawa's first real gas well was brought in by the Chippewa Hills Gas Development company, an organization of local men, on the Fourth. The $43,965 bond issue to pave Topeka's strects sold at 2 premium of $183. Attorney General Coleman has decided that two constitutional amendments which the last legislature voted to submit to the people at the coming election were void because not recorded in the legislative journal in accordance with the constitutional requirements.

A search of the records reveals the fact that the state prohibitory amendment was not published in either the house or senate journal. If Attorney General Coleman's opinion is correct the prohibitory law may be declared void. IN Liquor Law Invalid? Atchison's Coal Strike. The heavy rains flooded all the lowlands in Pottawatomie county, drowning and washing away nearly $5,000 worth of live stock owned by the county commissioners. The county poor farm is located in the bottoms, three miles north of Louisville. In the main wing of the county building water reached the second deck of detention cells and prisoners had to be taken to the hills in boats. That Ballot of Kansas. The Lawrence Gazette offers this problem, which puts "How Old Is Ann" in the shade by a good many degrees: Kansas has a law that prohibits the name of a candidate from appearing under more than one head on the official ballot.

Suppose two national parties should nominate the same man, what would the federal court do with the Kansas law? Cars to Haul the Wheat.
