a pa XJl CD as an able lawyer, and we believe he is every way fitted to hold the high and responsible position he aspires for. As a lawyer he stands at the head of the profession; and as a citizen is enterprising and energetic. "Great Caesar, Smith," said the editor of the society paper to his as sistant, "here a ten-line paragraph you've written about Col. Bulger, A Shot at the Bed Flag. Thursday's dispatches bring the welcome news that the supreme court of Illinois has affirmed the judgment of the lower court in the cases of the anarchists of Chicago, and has fixed the date of the execution of their sentence of death by hanging.

The court was a long time in issuing their decision, and in consequence the law abiding people of this country had become a little alarmed lest the tricks of law-yery would yet enable these followers of the red flag to escape from justice, There was more at stake in these cases than the execution of the law against murder. Summary punishment of these rioters will mean that the low estimate of the value of human life which they endeavor to ipculcate in the minds of their associates, canDot. for a moment be tolerated in this country. Their execution will not only be the just penalty for a wholesale murder, but it will tend to prevent like occurrences in the future. Moreover, it will relieve the community of a pernicious influence that has been at work at the yery foundation of our government, These men are enemies to every patriotic thought and impulse.

They have nothing in common with Americans. By precept and example they have attempted to scatter seeds of dessen-tion and treason. The decision just rendered places the doom of these men beyond human interference, unless the governor should see fit to commute their sentence, which is not at all likely, And inasmuch as their execution will simply be an act of defense, in behalf of the safety of American institutions and the perpetuity of American patriotism, Americans will have cause to feel grateful. Lamed Chronoscope. It is the editor's duty to speak of his town as the loveliest place beneath heaven's blue arch.

Speak of a deceased citizen as the fallen oak when he dies of the "Jim Jams." Call a man a prominent citizen when you know him to be the best poker player. Speak of a little street Arab as a bright eyed youth on the road to fame, and of the big-footed red-haired newly married woman as the accomplished bride. Call a lawyer a light of whom the profession ought to be proud, when you know him to be an ordinary pettifogger, and for this he is in luck if he receives even thanks. If half the people in town would labor as assidious-ly to upbuild the local paper as they do to tear it up and criticise it it would never be otherwise than prosperous. The same people are not open to criticism themselves, of course, Exchange.
