We ure told that 'scarcely for a righteous man will one die, yet erudven-ture for a uH)i munsomu would even dure to die but the men whose death we commemorate this day, cheerfully offered themselves a sacrifice for strangers and a despised race. They counted not their lives dear to them so they might break the fetters of the slave. They were men of convictions, and would follow their convictions though death stared them In the face. They were cordial haters of oppression, and would" fight Injustice wherever found if framed into law, If upheld and enforced by the government, then the government must be resisted. They were of Revolutionary stock and held that when a long train of abuses had put the people under absolute despotism, It was right and duty to throw off such government and provide new guards for further security.

The soul of John Brown was the inspiration of the Union armies in the eniauclimtion war, and it will be tho inspiration of all men in the present and distant future who may revolt against tyranny and oppression, because he dared to be a traitor to the government that he might be loyal to humanity. Let the curtain drop and see what the next drama will reveal to our contemplation no more eulogy, no more panegyrics on the departed dead. "The soul of John Brown is no longer marching on it is no longer the fountain which orators and statesmen sould draw forth their words of inspiration to prompt the rising generation to heroic deeds in behalf of bleeding humanity. Nothing of the kind. Three short years has transformed the glowing picture of the past Into one of a deadly opposite. We are now told by the same authority that "John Brown's massacre on the Potawatomie creek was a most revolting butchery, utterly indefeasible.

A careful estimate at noon of the number of persons present was placed at 5,000, altliough other estimates ranged from 6,000 to as high as 10,000. The programme of the proceedings was as follows Ex-Governor Charles Ilobinson was President of the day; Col. Kamuel Walker Marshal, and Senator John J. Ingalls Orator; Dr. W.

The letter was appropriately expressed and very Interesting. Resolutions were passed urging the speedy completion of a bronze or marble bust of Brown for the National Hall of Statuary at Washington. The following was offered by Judge Han way, and was unanimously adopted Resolved, That the State Historical Society is requested to collect and preserve all mementoes of our early history. 1 In addition to the above Col. John offered tho following, which was adopted by the same vote Resolved, That it is the duty of the State Historical.

This and a great deal more is what the President of the Osawatomie meeting says in the year 1880. The reader will see at a glance how the scene has changed. Old John Brown is no longer the grand figure head, the "hero of humanity the Srominent personage he was when the edication of the Osawatomie monument took place.

He is no longer "loyal to humanity," for he is charged as" being the only individual whose "record is a blot to our Kansas history." "He," Brown, committed an act which is termed "a most terrible and revolting butchery." He is charged with killing a man at Ft. Scott and robbing his store, and another peaceable citizen in Missouri was killed AND PLUNDERED OF EVERYTHING WHICH COULD BE TAKEN AWAY." This killing of a "peaceable citizen" was done by Kagi (see Brown's Parallels,) but this matters not. It all answers to 1111 a bill of indictment against John Brown, which at this time is an important point. James Hanway, Lane, Franklin County, Kansas. To be continued.
