It has since been illustrated by the genius of Fremont, and by tho numerous explorers engaged by the Government at great expense, to survey many diverse routes for the contemplated Pacific Railway, and to publish to the world at length the results of their researches. Any one must see that the route proposed for the main Pacific road is not -only unfair to all parts of tho country, except those lying upon tho Northern border, but that it involves many serious disadvantages which might, as we believe be easily avoided. The increased distance of the line) owing to its Northern deflection, Is a formidable objection while, by unnecessarily entering the region of long winters and deep snows, the utility of the road when tonstrncted, would often bo fatally impaired. At times, if we have been correctly informed- the mis-nanied SouthPass, through which the projected road along the valleys of the Republican and the Platte Would be compelled to proceed, is obstructed by snows to a depth of from twenty to twenty-five feet. All can appreciate the character of that objection. A more direct, and at the same time more southern route, would be clearly preferable.

That route is found along the valley of tho Smoky Hill Fork of the Kansas river, extending in a direction nearly due west of St. Xiouis, and on a lino with San Francisco, being fc the route pursued by Freemont in his expedition of 1844. The road would be materially shorter than by the northern route, would be unobstructed by snows and would run upon a parallel taking in the largest cities be benefited by such a work, beginning with New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore on the east, and embracing Pittsburg, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Denver, Salt Lake City and City in its path to San Francisco and the ocean on the West. Already several of them possess more than sufficient population to entitle them to seek the rank of States, and in a very brief period they will all be knocking at the door of Congress to ask recognition as new sovereigns. If re-organization in the South proceeds as slowly as many apprehend, these inchoate auriferous Pocky Mountain Republics may all be received into the Union before the people of the South have "concluded to purpose a just and honorable policy, and to comply with the only conditions upon which they can fully regain their old status.
