At the time of otirurrivul, Judge Cato was delivering liis charge to the Grand Jury, after he had concluded, the resolutions were submitted.

As there was some dispute concerning the real language used by the Judge, a paper was presented by John Brown requesting him to define his position more fully on the bogus, law question. Cato took the paper, read it, flung it to theSlieritracross the table and evidently was much agi-tatetl, said "the Court can not permit itself to be disturbed by outside issues." This closed our visit to the first and only United Court ever held in this district. Capt. Brown cried out in a loud voice "the Potawatomie Rifle Company will meet at the parade ground." The Tro-Slavery papers reported that an armed molt of abolitionists, composed at least of 150 men, had made threats to break up the Court, etc. This became in the servile organs of the nd-mJnistratioiis, a standing charge of the crimes committed by tiie Free S'ate party of Kansas.

There was not more than perhaps Utt present, no man had any fire arms that were visible, no insulting language were used to any one. Tli is incident lias been left out of the history of Kansas by all the writers, but it is worthy of record. The next morning the Judge, the Jury, the Sheritt'und all his subordinates hal tied towards that pro-slavery bus-tile Lieeonipton; and not a tear nor a mournful lamentation was ever uttered at their departure. EARLY REMINISCENCES. By Jas. Hamvay. NO. 6.

continued fkom last week. In the last number we gave an outline of what constituted the celebrated "Uogus Laws." TIuh Hcemed to be necessary, so as to give an insight into the true character of these legislative enactments, because we have come across class of sensitive persons, who have either a very treacherous memory, or they have a peculiar antipathy against introducing or referring to those crimes against the early history of Kansas. It is moreover self-evident to every unpredjudiccd person, that the election of March, and the results which followed the action of that legislative body, was the foundation which inaugurated the political troubles of '55 '50. That fraud on the elective franchise was the leading cause which culminated in civil war. It was the first ellbrt under the popular cry of "law and order" which introduced what is now known as "bull-dozing," and which has usurped authority and control in one third of the Southern states, and bids open leliauee to the Amendments of the United States Constitution.

In the Spring of '50 a large number of emigrants settled in the Valley of the Potawatomie, this extended into Anderson county, about on a line with Garnett, the county seat of that county. Many claims were taken that Spring, but in a short time the peaceful avocation of the squatter was changed for a call for volunteers. The rumble of a distant storm soon convinced them that if they intended to settle in Kansas, they must fight for their homes. That which was called a "squatter sovereignty" in the States, was "slavery or your life," in the Territory. It become neo-essary for the Free State men to organize for mutual safet v.

In September, '55 the Free State party met and passed the first halforra or series of resolutions; they were known as the "Big Spring Convention." Most of the leading members of that party were in attendance at the Convention. One of the resolutions rend: Itesolved, resolutions ot our military company, there can be but little doubt. Only nine months previous on this very spot of ground, a drunken rabble from a neighboring State might be seen depositing their votes at an election authorized by Gov. Reeder, for the pur-is su of electing members of the legis-iat i ve council. They came armed, took possession of the bnllot-box and deposited 199 votes, while the whole district did not contain over 50 votes, and most of them, through fear, never showed themselves at the polls on that clay; and this unparalletl outrage on the elective franchise was passed over by the vernal echoes of the then administration.

There were but few names more extensively known in the early days of Kansas history than that of Henry Sherman. He was a German who many years prior to the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, had settled and taken a tract of land at the time the Potawatomie Indians had possession of this country. His residence was the Claee Indian annuities were distributed the Government. The post-orHce which was called "Shermanville," was kept by him for many years. The elections under the bogus laws were held at his residence, the Courts or what few were convened, were also held there but as he lived at the crossing of the Potawatomie creek, at the time the large amount of emigration occasioned by the California gold excitement, his name become known far and near.

"Dutch Henry's crossing" was known by all the early pioneers. His loud boisterous manner and the frequent tli reats of what lie would do to the free state settlers, produced a strong feeling of relation. He was generally regarded as an ignorant tool in the hands of the slave power. In the month of March, IKSh, he was shot by two free state men While traveling along the public highway. He died a few days after.

This act was almost universally condemned by all classes, free state as well as pro-slavery. It was prompted by private malice and revenge. If he had fell in lie troubles of '50 it would not have caused any surprise, but emigration was touring in by the thousands, and even a boisterous pro-slavery man as Henry tSherniim, could no longer be of niucn use to the slave power. I shall have occasion to speak of the Sherman family again, if I continue these reminiscences. Jamkh Han way, Ijuiie, Franklin county, Kansas.
