Copyrighted: But free for circulation. Simon Petsr taught by John became a disciple of Christ and was ordained to the Apostleship to bring forth fruit that should remain. John 15:16. Peter was a true man firm as a rock. He knew no flinching 'from "duties, no swerving from responsibilities, was impulsive and ever tion is pressed the third time- Peter was grieved and said, Lord, thou knowest all things, thou knowest I love Thee." Reply "Feed my sheep." This bold and positive turning of responsibility upon Jesus to accept, or deny is affirmetively received, "Feed my sheep." The Lord has been measuring length, breadth and depth ot Simon son of Jonas, sounding his whole nature: and Simon Peter in the two fold nature, son of Jonas, and son of God by regeneration rises in majesty far a-bove the common disciple, the lower apostle.

None but a regenerated man washed as white as snow could dare look uoon the face ot Jesus resurrected and say, "Thou knowest thai I love Thee." He was full of God-love. What' ''Peter then in his sins and in condemnation?" Shame, shame to him who has so written Man go burn your book. Nor did he fall a time when Christ turned and said get behind me Satan, for thou savor, est not the things that be of Gori, but of man." What, he a devil? to whom the keys of the kingdom are given in trust to use at the appointed times; winch he did use at the pentecost to let in the Jews; again at the house of Cornelius to let in tKe Gentiles. It was the evu sojrit. Satan which had tempted him in the wilderness Christ commanded to get behind him.

Satan was tempting Pet er and through him endeavoring to swerve Christ, ion for Simon 1 1 was Peter; a instruc-rebuke timely given. The testimony is closed and the arguments closed. Now hear the verdict. Remembering that i reauy id jjusurmis ui uaugci iu 1 Irnnr thfl fop. When Christ washed his disciples feet, in giving Peter to ly washed, therein and thereby de their word; not- Peter alone.

Again the witness says, "Peter followed alar off." Dare none other go to witness the trinl? yes, anothtr disciple went out and invited, or Drought, Peter into the hall; and there warmed himself by the fire; only Ho have courage enough to witness the trial and excution; Peter is one of them. But Peter, poor Simon bewildered, perplexed and buffeted by Satan beyond his human power or strength, declared positivtly that he did not know the man on trial. If in ommand of himself at the moment Simon Peter was then guilty of a great sin in the denial.of his Lord. Let us examine further the testimony; for outside of this, human opinion is not valid. Luke upon the stand (chapt.

22:31) gives us this, the Lord said Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has asked to have you that he may sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for you that your faith fail not: and when thou hast turned again strengthen thy brethren." converted," is art turned-The active is the correct.) This was said to Peter yet in the room where, Christ had given the bread and the wine. Herein is giVt-Bt'iis the key with which open out to view the leal character of Simon Peter beautifully and majestically portrayed. Witness further Peter now declares his readiness to go with the Lord to prison and to death. The Lord now presents the oil with which we lubricate the key and the spring of the lock; "I tell thee Peter the cock shall not crow this day before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me." It shall be so, Feter can't prevent it. In this last address the name Peter alone is used.

In the first address Simon only is used. These are both significant. Simon presents his humanity, the natural man which is to be tempted and tested by Satan by Christ's permit. Christ so informs Simon by saying, "I have prayed for thee tha: thy faith fail not." Peter, the iock, presents the cleansed man regenerat ed, spirit born, of God, into the spirit of Christ, partaking of the Rock of agis cleft for Simon, cleft for all who flee to Christ for salvation. "Thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me" tells positively that he is speedi-1 ly, very soon, to be given over to be tried by Satan as a rock is often tried by a tornado, or by a giiating cyclone.

"I have prayed for thee' that thy faith fail not; and thou hast turned strengthen thy brethren" is full assurance given Simon Peter that he shall come forth victorious and strengthen his brethren. Was the prayer of Christ ever ineffectual? not as applied to Simon's case. The act of denial is done: Peter turns and looks upon the Lord; sees the Lerd is looking at him; the enchanting power of Satan is broken, and Peter "turns again" to be himself. how soon, how swiitly the adversary flees when the tempted and buffeted look with appeal to Christ. Simon is verily Peter now, but must of necessity weep, and weep bitterly, not with remorse, but sorrow to full c.picity if soul.

May we not presume he abides. But I hear it said, yea I read it in biblical exposi tiens, that "Simon Peter cursed and swore pro-tanely. These are chargeable for slander, and libel. The witness says, "He began to curse and to swtar I know not the man." The basis for guilt if any in this is the lie told, not in the preliminary. "I know not the man is the direct object of the verb to sweitn The preliminary is only a solemn vow to tel! the truth what he told was false: hence if in his right mind free to act upon the right, then he would be guilty of per jury.

But he is according 10 evidence thus far examined no more guilty than was Abraham in ihe act of raising his hand with knife to slay his son; or Job in Satans power for trial. But lest some accuse us of dodging responsibilities, we turn to the preliminaries. The first definition of the word to curse; is "to perplex." Surely Petei by his repeated denial perplexed the inquirers pressing into business none of theirs. Second de finition is ''to This Peter did to impress more convincingly his words of denial. "To swear" means to affirrn.

Examine Webster's unabridged. When Gd. imposes a corse or when He sware hyiim self He is not mad profane over it like an angry tar- When He curses a people for sins he sends ttie pestilence etc. Oh that the world's men, some ornamented with D. )).

would use a little gospel eye salve to remove th scales that they may see to learn the, of the gospel science! But we cannot givo a full and final verdict in 'Jiis esse until further examination of testimony, leaAring not a leaf unturned; that if possible we mqy find against Simon Peter evidence of bus repentance, and of restoration bT- reniission ot sm from this his alleged direful fall. Very popular divines, so called, have said with mouth and with pen; "His weeping is evidence of repentance." One witness say "Hh wept." Other says "He wept out and wept Herein is no evidence of repentance, only evidence of soriow. How could he otherwise than bow and weep havingr passed ur der so strange a vest by Satan's 1 haod When Mary Magdalene delivered the message of the risen Saviour to the disciples "mourning and weeping," were they repenting? Peter was with them; was he again repenting? for what? Christ atthe toml; of Lazarus wept, was he repenting? No more was Peter repenting over the denial than Abraham need repent, or Job need repent. The first man to whom Christ from the tomb presents himself is Simon Peter. Evidence enough is this of itself to prove that Peter stands as the Rock unscathed and in full confidence with the Master.

The disciples too evidently regard him their leader and counsellor. Again, at the sea of Tiberias Ch-ist showed himself to the little band of seven under Peter's leadership; in tarly morn as a stranger he directed them to cast the net on the right sute Reductio ad absurdutn. Let us suppose that Simon Peter did sin and fall; and unless he hai repented of this sm and had "been restored he rawst bae perisherl must have been eternally banished from the presence of his Lrd. it is a fact established in the first suit that Simon Peter was 3 cleansed man; then he must have entered Into the fold by or through. 'The door." Now the shepherd says of such; "They shall jvaver perish." John 10.

So Peter could not have perished. Again-Simon Peter having entered the fold a regenerated man had "tasted the heavenly gift had been made partaker of the Holy Ghost -had tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to Of such the great ap ostle says, "If these shall fall away to renew them again even unto repentence is impossible." Heb. 6 No hope then for Peter. 3'd; Simon Peter a saved matt spiritually saw Christ and enjoyed him. The witness says, "He that abideth not in the doctrine, of Christ hath not seen Mm, nor known 1 John.

Then if Peter sinned, he never had been a cleansed man; but was of the devil from the beginning. 4'th count In Simon Peter was an indwelling Christ, John 1,12,13. And "Chri? was manifested that he might destroy Ihe works of the devil." 1 John. IPsatan caused Peter to apostatize, then he, satan, destroyed the work of Christ in the human soul, and his power was superiour to Christ's. Christ said lje sha11 nevcr perish." But he must perish; for to be orn a second time of God Is im- possible though a doctor of an ism in Abilene, (we are informed) he has been thus born twenty times So then for Peter there could have been no place for repentance or restora- against satan's power, Hence by the science of the Gos pel we find that the supposition of Simon Peter's apostacy and fall leads in four eounts to conclusions Absurd, false and ridiculous.

The supposition results in absurdity am! is null and void. Hence Simon Peter did not fall; did not commit sin; conic not because born of God. I Fohr.3, 9. Talmage, Kansas. James Cautjhey was an ordinary preacher, filling pulpits with ordinary ability.

He consecrated himself to the work cf scul aving, and then he became a great power. Carvosso when sixty years of age, gave him-reli to the work of soul-saving, was instrumental hi the salvation of mbassador, he who adds to the sacred nor would Christ be secure clares Peter had been washed spirit-ualty and was clean every whit. So wtre ten others of them. John 13. Beyond the shade of doubt Peter had been cleansed whm he answered the Son of Man's pressing inquiry by saying "Thou art the Christ the Son of the living God." The Master's response, "Piesh and blood has not revealed it unto thee," plainly teaches that Peter was a spiritualized man communing with the spirit of the Father.

"Thou ait a rock," said to Simon Peter by the Master, teaches us of permanence, that Simon Peter is firm, ever abiding, never falling, likened unto Himself and will overcome even to the end. The lesson given in the 15'th chapter cf John's gospel pre-ssiits the eleven cleansed notby water, but "through the word spoken;" hence spirit clean. Thus clean, Peter abides when Christ is betrayed and led to the palace of the high priest to be tried condemned. Sinori Peter thrice denies his Lotd; for this he is now on trial. Let us now diligently search the four gospels for evidence of guilt, sin and repent-ence; anil for hi restoration from condemnation.

Some men say he was guilty of vain boast. "Though all men forsake Thee, yet will not Jesus said unto him "verily I say unto thee, this night before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice." "Peter said unto him; though I should die with thee yet will I not deny thee." Now note the' context; "Likewise said all the disciples." Viewed Irom our standpoint Simon Peter is no more chargeable of vain boast than the rest of them. Again it is often said Peter nnuifcstej- cowardice while Christ or takes therefrom does it at his own peril; having critically examined each witness, and weighed the testimony in whole harmonious in all its parts; we are authorized to write for the whole race of Adam now extent, as it were with indelliable ink and diamond pointed pen; Simon Peter did not fall; never, never; Nor did he commit sin in the denial of his Lord. He is rescued from his slanderers; and no longer to be used for a dodging post for frauds believing to play hide and seek about who exult in hope of salvation to-day, and tomorrow vrommit damning sips and fall; again on the monow are in ardent fellowship with the Lord of glory. Sustained was Peter kept in the Father's name by the power of 1.
