Before three years of age he sheds his middle teeth; at three he sheds one more on either side of the central teeth; at four he sheds the two corner and last of tho fore teeth. Between fouf and five the horse cuts the under tusks; at five will cut the upper tusks, at which time his mouth will be complete. At six yeard the grooves and hollows begin to fill up a little; at seven the grooves will be well-nigh filled upj except the corner teeth, leaving little brown spots where the dark-brown hollows formerly were. At eight the whole of the hollows and grooves are filled up. At nine there is very often seen a small bill to the odtside corner teothj the point of the tusk is worn off, and the part that was concave begins to fill up arid become rounding; the squares of tho central teeth begiu to disappear, and the gums leave them small and narrow at the top.

Our knowledge of the medico-military organization of ancient Rome owes not a fow of its most distinctive details to Switzerland, Windisch, for example, the Vin-donlssa of antiquity, has proved to the Swiss archaeologist a reul mine of surgical treasure-trove, lying aa it does at the junction of the Aare and the Reuss, and commanding on: the one side tbe two Italian high ways (from the Great St Bernard and from Como) and on the other the communications with the Pvhina, and Danube. Here was found thai celebrated monument with inscription to Tiberius Claudius Ilymnus, surgeon of the Twenty-first legion. Here, too, have been unearthed medicine chests, instrument cases, with pincers, scalpels, needles, catheters and such like in fine preservation. Pr, Conrad Brunner, of Zurich, has based on these discoveries a highly interesting monograph, and the enthusiasm he has awakened in the medical branch of archaeological research bids fair to fructify in even more precious discoveries. Not long ago there was disinterred at Badon-im-Aargau a Roman house containing' 14 apartments, varying in size, and with walls painted with designs of the highest interest for the classical scholar.

When exposed to light of day there appeared about the struc-" ture a number of fibulas and vases, and in the apartments themselves such a quantity of surgical instruments as to favor the conclusion that the house was neither more nor less than a hospital. This is in many respects a novelty in medical archaeology. We have very clear notions as to what the valetudinaria or infirmaries for slaves on patrician estates were but a building for the wounded or ailing Roman soldier presents points of interest, as hitherto ne such buildings have been found in their integrity. Moreover, when we add that never either in Switzerland or iii any other scene of Roman military occupation has there beenl found so largo an assortment of surgical Instruments as in this newly discovered hospital near we have said enough to awaken scholarly and professional curiosity, in the spot, and to lend additional attraction to the picturesque "Kurort," known since the first; century A. We have, a time or two in the past, made a 50 cent rate to new sudscribers or to old ones who would pay up, but we will never make such an offer again; there is no money in it. This is the best olfer we expect to make, and it will only run a reasonable length of time. A Good Proposition. The Kansas City Times recently printed letter addressed by Peter Snoogle, a Long Beach soap baron to Private Secretary Ed Little, offering the oBly Kansas man who ever was honored by the Sultaii of Turkey, his daughter's hand in marriage.

Following is Snoogle's letter: "I have just read that you have been honored by His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Turkey, with the grand cor don of the Order ot the Medjidie and I have b'een kindly informed by a friend, Mrs. Bradley-Martin, who owns the only authentic book on ancient herald ry, in New York, that you are the only native American Count in this country I have an only daughter, who for the past three months, has been requesting me to buy her a Count, but which I havs refrained from doing heretofore, for tbe reason' that I am an intense ad mirer of President McKinley and be iieve iu American products. "jow, my aear uount, an a man of busiaess; engaged for thirty-eight years in the manufacture of Snoogls's vegetable soap, the only soap of its kind that will keep the hands from chapping, and hence I am a man of few words; I have delegated the power of speech to my money, and I will leave that talk for me. "To be brief, -want to know hew much' you will take for yourself. I have been informed that Counts, like everything else, even soap, are now governed by the inexorable law of supply and dsmandand I suppose as they are not yet as silver is, they are rising in value and command a high price.

"I auj not a and while i am too good a business man to bo extrava yet I will pay for you whatever you tliink is right, ilow would a million dollars strike you "If you favorably of this proposition let me know and 1 will send you my daughter's picture i oil; if yon do uot think favorably of it, let me hear from you, anyway, and perhaps 1 will raise it. My daughter wants a Count and she must have one. 1 am not the man to deny her those trifles for tho sake of a little money. "In case you will marry her I nrill say that after a reasonable length of time 1 will, if she likes you, present te yeu pay soap factory in addition to your marriage dowery; and, you perceive, that you cau then live oil' the fat of the land, or rather the vegetable oil ot' our country, very nicely. "It raakt'3 hut little difference if you are already married.

I have money and the courts oa my side and we can (easily arrange for a divorce. Let me hear from you by ret'iru mail with phctngraph. lielive ins, my sir, to be your loving'p'ip i by anticipation. See H. Co.
