E. JENKINS, Clerk. PUBLIC MEETIHO. On Saturday Jast, one of the largest and most enthusiastic meetings ever held in Doniphan County was convened At the Con rt House. Ow: ing to circumstances beyond our control, the issue of our paper was delayed until late in the afternoon, so that it was impossible for to personally attend, although earnestly solicited and very desirous of doing so.

There wera spirited and stirring speeches by Col. Ege, Capt. Laeze-leee and others, and an able defense of the resolutions by E. J. Jenkins.

We do not see that there is anything objectionable in the Preamble and resolutions. The exigencies of the times require active, stringent measures. Traitors must not be harbored, aided or abetted, neither must law lessness be permitted. The Union man of Kansas must be awake and prove that they are so by their acts, if they would secure the future safety of their lives and property. These resolutions were not intended to clash with the military authority here, have refeienc to the civil laws, which ought not to be superseded by the military, unless there ij a clear, imperative necessity.

The good work goes bravely on Njw Orleans has Iwen reclaimed from secession and our troops are in quiet possession of the city. We have no particulars, more than thaf there was a hard and well-fought battle. The fall of New Orleans dispirits as vull it may the Con-fedei atrs. General Hanks, notwithstanding bad roads, is cautiously pushing forward towards Stanton, being now within a few miles of that place. It is doubted whether Jackson will make a stand on that point, for fear of being flanked by our column from the mountain department. Pittsburg, April 25.

Yesterday morning tilty deserters came within the lines herefrom Corinth. They state that Beauregard was retreating Grand Junction, on the railroad between Corinth and Memphis. Tiiis sems probable, as for a dav or two la rge bodies of the enemy have appeared near our lines evidently as a Hind, while tho main body escaped- Gtn, Ilalleck yestarday morning immediately ordered a general advance, and the front line, including Gen. llurlburts division, now rests at Shiloh Meeting House four miles from Corinth. A reconnolsance in force of fiv thousand cavalry was also made andlargo bodios ot rebels discovered.

Sharp skirmishes wer constantly occurring, and one a rapid fire ot SEEDS FOR DISTRIBUTION. WEST INDIA GHERKIN SEEDS. Raised exelusivttly for piekleG. Should be cultivated as cucumbers. The fanners of Northern Kansas have tried pretty thoroughly the raising -of corn and wheat for market, and find since the supply exceeds tho home demand, and they must seek another market that it will not pay. It is true that the blockade of the Mississippi hai worked greatly to our disadvantage, but after the blockade is raised and commerce is.

restored to is customary channels, the transportation of such bulky and heavy articles will eat up all profit. Under these circumstances, farmers should look around to see if there is not something that will pay butter. The raising of sheep in Kansas cannot fail to bo profitable when properly and intelligently attended to. The government tax on dogs must diminish those enemies of sheep, and when it becomes the interest ot the community to atten to it, the wob will soon ba extirpated. The cost of shepherds to look after the sheep would bo less than the interest n'sc-BMarj ro raise grain.

TI13 capital necessary to embark in the business would not be mor3 than is rquird to a farm and get it in working order. Wool always commands cash in the market: and the oust of transportation being a very sunll percentage of its value, the produsd-ean afford to send it directly to thy manufacturer, thus dispensing with middlemen', who take so much of the profit which vUght and would go to the producer in most caes. Our broad rolling-prairies, with thair clear running brooks, will furnish the teatol food and water. We hope our farmers TClIcontiau? to raise and experiment on tho eorg hum. Such experiment must and iu the general and profitable production of sugar from this plant.

sngsr can be produced here, it will save the cost of two transportations. First, what we raise to barter for the sugar second, the sugar to our market. There are many sheltered spots where tobacco can be successfully raised, and of the profitablness of the crop there can be no want of -labor will b-in eooie measure supplied by the many con trabands who havs taken shelter our state, and who must be eup lied with work. Many of them are skilled in the raising of tobacco and hemp. This profitable article of pro-d action' requires more labor than most farmers could command.

Wo hope the larmtrs A Northern Kansas will give tlndr neighbors the-benefit of their experience through the Patriot, either in short, articles, or facto which we can work up into articles.
