The Toa5f Catmo, in aaia Cosily, Kansas. This new place, now less than three months old, has already acquired the appearance of an eastern village. Where, but a short time since eaiight was heard save theserecch of the night-hawk, the howl of the prairie wolf, or the whoop of the red man, may now be heard the mechanic ia the Koors of his the ringing of the anvil or the harsh grating of the saw. Even-vestige of the stillness and quiet of an unsettled region has passed away, end the busy employments of men take their place. This vjliags is located on the Territorial road, running from Atchison westward, 41 miles from that place and in a direct line from Elwood to Fort Riley between which idaces a rail-road is now in contemplation; being a continuance of the Hannibal St.

Joseph toward Santa-Fe. The town lies on abigh, gently undulating prairie divide, nd slopes oif gradually till it reaches Eik Creek. It already boasts a nrjst ei-oellent Raw-mill, to which a gi W-niill will be added this season, and no place in central Kansas has a better Hotel. As regards timber it is most happily situated; there being some thirty acres of walnut and oak upon the town site Elk, Straight, Sujdier and Spring creeks, ail near by, furnish abundance of fire-wood and timber for tho mill; while Red Vermillion, eight miles distant, is nnsnrpassed for its heavy growth of the best liajj Escdlout building stone is found ca tin bank of Elk Greek, which can be easily quarried; and less than two miles from the town there is a fine vein of stone coal. Vith these advantages, and a rich agricultural country around, Ostaeio offers superior inducements to the emigrant and capitalist the farmer may settle near the growing village and there sell his produce and bnV his year's supply.

Anon the siiriii cry ot tne steam car lsneara, ana an enterprising and flourishing community springs into active life, to crown with riches tihe early settlers in that region. Among tho proprietors may bo B. Perkins, of Elwood, Kansas; Dr. Or. Fnsbi, late of Mitchell, Iowa; Saml.

Bradshaw, of Ontario, Kansas Ey Ivan, Harshall County, aw as. To one, unacquainted with western ra pidity with which towns spring up in this, the ultima ihuleof civilization is truly remarkable. That in this multitude of embryo there should be many whose existence is found save but on paper, is highly probable, and causes little wonder; but in every country there are locations, which in themselves foreshadow the success and future greatness cf tho nascent communities'. What man, possessed of half an.eye, but long ago foretold the future growth of Chicnjfi and St. Louis, of St.

Paul and Davenport their growth may have been more rapid than was ex pected by some, but their advancement was none nhe Tints it is with Sylvan; that this is no paper town is proven by the improvements already there; by the best kept Hotel in Kansas, a most excellent grist and saw mill, several stores and a rapidly increasing population. Situated in the geographical. center of Marshall County, in one of the richest agricultural districts of Kansas, with the certainty, cf having the county seat removed there, when once the country becomes, settled; -on the. direct line of th Elwood Palmetto R. tho continuation of the strongest railroad interest in the toward the Pacifle Ocean; with an abundance of timber on eveiy side, fine springs.of clear pellucid water, reminding one of the glorious mountain streams of the East; with building stone of the best blue limestone; on the line of travel leading, East and West from the Missouri to tho Valley.

of the Blue, and on to California; and iu a country proverbial for its healthiness with all these advantages, what can prevent Sylvan from becoming a town of considerable importance; and it now offers every inducement to the settler seeking a home or the capitalist in search of a investment for his money. ace a few claim? still left near the town site, which if quickly for may be and in a fewyears they will amply repay the labor expended on them, and en rich their possessors. Among, the prominent proprietors, are the fol lowing gents: D. B. Perkins, of Elwood, Eansas; Safford Nebraska City, N.

Jao. J. Sarnplo, of Wyandotte, Kansas A. G. Barrett, of Sylvan, Kansas; HOW AUD ASSOCIATION, PHILADELPHIA.
