Editor Review The regular LUMBER PALMER OBTON, Manufacturers and Dealers in PINE and NATIVE LUMBER Sash, Doors, Blinds, 3IOUZDINGS, "Little Joker" Is the best smoking tobacco. The ex-confederate soldiers are organizing "Camps," something similar to the G. A. and for similar purposes. The first one, R.

E. Le Camp No. 1, has been instituted at Richmond and numbers among Its members several leading members of the confederacy. The star route trials began more than a year ago. have unquestionably, acutally cost the government more than the defendants are alleged to have de-frauned it of.

This is a great country for humbugs, and the star route trials are not among the least that have afflict-ed us. Kansas City Journal. The Kansas Chief closed its 26th volume last week. The Chief has the appearance of seeing the end of another 26 years, and when that is accomplished there is no telling but what it would be Just in prime to acceps a challenge for doubling that score. No paper in Kansas, or any other State, can beat the Chief in "get up" and "general appearance." We have it on good authority that an excellent stain for giving light-colored wood the appearance of black walnut may be made and applied as follows: Take Brunswick black, thin it down with turpentine until it is about the rigth tone and color, and them add about one-twentieth its bulk of varnish.

This mixture, it is said, will dry hard and take varnish well. Scientific American. How grossley the pension bounty of the national government is liable to abuse is shown by the fact that the pension agent in Philadelphia has recovered no less than 700 pension certificates which were in the hands of pawnbrokers, who regulary drew the money, and held the pensioner in a sort of slavery through the obligations of debt. All honest soldiers and pensioners ought to do everything in their power to pre vent such frauds. Atchison Champion.

The Speakership contest is beginning to be warm, and Samuel Cox and Samuel Randall are exchanging compliments of a Pickwickian character. The Republicans have nothing at stake in the contest, but can look on and enjoy It, feeling about about as the old lady did when she witnessed a combat be tween her husband and a bear. She said she "'lowed sometimes I'd rather see the old man lick, and then agin I felt fur th' bar; but bynebye when they wor a goln' it like all possessed I didn'n keer a durn which licked jes so heaven 'lowed me to see their fight out." Chicago In ter Ocean. A Wrong Idea! It is a wrong idea to look at every proposition that is submitted to our people, from a money stand point. There never was.

nor never will be, a town or community, that will prosper to any great extent when nothing only dollars and cents are considered. A liberal man, and an thorough energetic people do not hang back and refuse to lend their influence or contribute a portion of their wealth, to aid in any enterprise that may call strangers to their town, just because they do not see the imme' diate return of the money they have ex pended iu getting up the attraction that has been the means of having the peo-nle come anions them. The contem plated 4th of July celebration was giv en up partially on account of the failure to raise sufficient money to insure a success of the undertaking. Some wanted a certain few to put up the most of the money, "because they would derive the greatest benefit." This, perhaps, was all right, if there is to be nothing but a "money value" placed upon a gathering of this kind, but it should not be looked at in that light alone, and our people will not strike the key note of success until this "one idea7' is put away, Money is a good thing to have, in fact very little can be accomplished without it. We realize this as much as any one, But the benefits derived by its use can not always be realized at once, but it ni mke itself felt sooner or later.

Get people to come here, to talk of the place, its men, and business, get better ac quainted, let tbcm see how we cau ap preciate a social time as weu as auena to business, and then it is oniy a ques. tion of time when the dollars will make their appearance. By having a cele bration here, thousands of people would have come here who will now go some where else, and the harvest that should be gathered here will be gathered by others. We believe In looking to our home interests first, and then to others, and it 1 jnst and right that White Cloud should take advantage of every opportunity offered, to show to those around us that she Is "up and coming." And Everything Usually Kept In A First-Class Drug Store. Prescriptions carefully filled day or night.

weekly visit of the Review, while more than welcome, reminds me of the un-kept promise to report progress and condition. We found the preachers house in bad condition when we arrived here, but we have things in pretty good shape now and the latch string is out for any and all the good friends from White Cloud. Our place is what is called a live little mining town of about 1,800 inhabitants, located in a handsome valley, the ground gradually rising on the east and west to the hight of three hundred feet. This higher ground is the location ot the coal beds. There is a large amount of trade the town, thirty or more business houses representing all branches, does not appear to be too many.

We have three good churches, Baptist, Congre-gationalist and Methodist; one large flowering mill; bank; public hall; four hotels and a large stone school house, about the size of yours. The land in this section apart from the mining district is good, but not so good as the land of Doniphan and Brown counties. fact I have found none in Kansas that are as good. Of course we have a news paper and a real good one. Local news from here would not interest your readers, an incident, however, of more than local intrest occurred on Sunday even ing last.

The proprietor of one of the hotels here, and one of the oldest citizens of the place, shot himself through the head, in his room. Drink and fam ily jars said to be the cause. This let ter is to long already. I will tell you something about our mines next time. C.
