Tiie SouTiicnfj llonnoit. An incident related in Governor Hamilton's late speech, at Austin, Texas, illustrates at once 'he character of what are called Southern wrongs, and the feelings entertained by the rebels toward the freedmen, viz: But when you talk about educating the "nigger," oh, horrors! The negro to be educated I Who tsver heard of such a monstrosity Black men and women with hooks and satchels, and school baskets on their arms going to school Austin One of the members of the convention 0:1 the street said to another, pointing 10 some of the nerojs going to school, "Good God, look at that is lhal nol enough lo make the blood curdle in one's veins?" The demise of Gen. Scott has caused to be reproduced the following incident of the early days of ihe rebellion: "A rumor having reached Virginia to ihe fleet thai Lieutenant General Scolt was about to resign his commission iu the United Slates army.

Judge Robinson, an old personal friend aud classmate of his, came to Washington from Richmond lo offer hiu a commission as Commander in-Chief of the forces of the Confederate States. On hearing ihe purport of Judge Robinson's errand, ihe General 111-lerrupied him with a declaration that if he wenl any further in making such a proposition to hun, he (Ju'de would not be permitted lo gel back 10 Richmond adding, that having sworn lo support ihe Constitution of the United States, he realized all ihe honorable obligation of thai oath, and should of course observe them." The Fenian question came up again, June 19lh, before the House CommiUe on Foreign Affairs, on the proposition to repeal the neutrality laws. There appears lo be considerable dispositon to recommend to the House a modification of the laws. The Committee have ihe opinions of the law officers of the Government against any such change or repeal. The pressure, however, upon members of ihe Committee and the House is quite sirongin favor of the Fenian interests.

The Committee, after an elaborate discustion came to no conclusion. A bold conspiracy, about to break was discovered al Atlania, among the prisoners in the counjy jail on Sunday, the 1 7th. Their aim was to murder the Sheriff, overpower the guard, and when oustdo lo irtisi 10 chance for final escape. The plot was revealed lo the Sheriff as ho was about to enter ihe prison, by a negro who was in jnil and certified lo by three of the white men who had refused loenler into the plot, Al! ihe conspirators are nmv heavily ironed. As immense number of teams daily pass through our town, going to all parts of Kansas. The flood of immigration doesn't di minish a bit.

A great number hail from Iowa, Wisconsin, Miunesota and Michigan leaving there on account of cold. Couldn't stand it, coming to a wanner climate. Many are settling in our county. Large freight trains pass each way daily. Capt.

Edmund R. Colhook, extensive dealer in hardware and cutlery, St. Joseph, advertises in The Reporter. He was a Commander in the Navy throughout the war, on the "Wehawken," we believe, and, before the war, was one of the early Republicans of St. Joseph.

Mr. Colhoun has a large fine stock, and our citizens can do no better anywhere than to buy of him. Gen. Garfield's bill creating a Bureau of Education, which was rejected last week, came up, June 19th, in the House on a reconsideration, and passed without debate by nearly forty majorit'. It provides for a Commissioner of Education at $4,000 a year salary, and four clerks at the usual rates ol pay.

The duties of the Department are simply to collect educational and other statistics. The bill roes lo the Senate for concurrence. Dobinc a thunder storm, last week, the lightning struck the residence of Win. Kir-by, at Doniphan, knocking Mrs. Kirby senseless to ihe floor, hot without doing her any eerioas injury.

Mr. Kirby was sick in bed, and was unharmed. The house was considerably damaged, breaking the doors and windows. Wholesale Poisoning. A case of the most extensive wholesale poisoning ever known or heard of hus accur-red in Orange county, New York.

Families and whole committees have been more or less afflicted many fatally. On investigation the cause was traced to a very singular source the impregnation of flour with lend. A Mr. Marsh, it seems, was a large mtnu-acturer of (lour in that county, and some of the hurrs of his mill becoming defective Ihe cavities were plogged wiib lead, which by trituration became 'imsedy intermingled with the flour. On fermentaiioti and Inking, the lead is converted into carbonate of lead well known as a deadly poison, Merchant millers should take note of this fact, as the practice is not unerminon.

Thompson and his brother F. M. Thompson. It is certainly one of the most during and successful robberies we have ever been called on to publish, and it is sincerely to be hoped that no effort will be spared by ihe officers of the law lo ferret out the robbers. Saint Joseph Herald, 24th.

Denver City Kailroail. Ey a private telegram just received from Hon. B. F. Lo in, we learn that his amendment to the Saint Joseph and Denver City Railroad Bill has just passed ihe House by a handsome mnjoii.y.

This amendment, as we have before shown, makes ihe land graul direct to the company without the intervention of the Kansas Legislature. Wi hope our Senators will see that it is adopted in ihe Senate, as ihe delays lhal would naturally orow out of hostile interests iu Kansas might be fatal to tin objects of the grant. Northwest Missouri wants the bill as it has passed ihe House. SI. Joe Union.
