Eshleman "In my sixteen years' experience in the drug business I have never seen or sold or tried a medicine that gave as good satisfaction as Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrcea Remedy. Sold by Jacob Miller. Dh die morning of Feb. 20, 1895, I was sick with rheumatism, and lay in bed until May 21st when I got a bottle of Chamberlain's Pain Balm. A very remarkable case is reported frorii North Carolina. A man became convinced that the "devil was after' him-" The man was not crazy, but had a secret fear that he was not all right in a religious snse; so, one fine morning, iii an effort, ashS explained? to "escape the devil, he jumped out of his bed and ran under it screaming while he was being taken out. He resisted, and in an effort to get under the bed he got his head through the chair rbunds. In struggling, he broke his neck and died. A debating society is now discussing the question Did the devil finally get him? The American Mutual Live Stock Association, of Wathena, is now fully authorized by the Honorable Super-intendant of Insurance to write insurance on hogs, cattld, mules and horses, against loss fey death from disease, accident, lightning, tornado windstorm or cyclones: i It having been thoroughly investigated by him and found to be strictly a legal body, was bj him licensed5 for suCh purpose ori the 15th day of March, 1898.

It may seem a hardship for a company to be held up by the insurance commissioner until he satisfies himself as to its legal status but it is a benefit in the end, for the people of Kansas know that when our insurance Commissioner admits a company to do business in this state it is all right: Br We have not seen Lee Scofield for a long but we know hejs still or the following story would never liave be'e'n invented Speaking about smooth men in their -business, remarked a Kansas drummer, 'one of the sihoOthfest that has come "under my observation is a flour merchant at Edgar. lie let the story out that while he was stooping over his flour bin a $150 diamond ring had slipped off his finger into the flour, He appeared to be greatly exercised over the loss got a notice in the local paper, but finally announced with a sigh that hii would have to give it up that the ring was in the flour some where, that lie supposed it Would turn up in a sack of flour, but he had no idea what one. Well you ought to have seen the boom that guileless man had in the flour trade. For the next week he had to hireextra help to fill sacks out of that bin. One man who never bought a from him before came in and laid in a winter's supply.

And the smooth merchant whistled Softly as he filled the sack, acd winked the otheig? eye." described occurs, we are forced to for once put aside our modesty and seize the chance to crow over our less fortunate brothers and sisters. We are probably the only editor in this section of the country who has ever had the chance to refuse an invitation to put his feet under the table of our president, and it goes without saying that the invitation was cheerfully accepted. It has struck us that a short discription of the dinner together with some of the surroundings might bg of interest to some of our readers and also make some few a little envious of our superior social standing. Upon the occasion we" were not the only person of prominenc who was invited, but the company included Marcus A. Hanna, several of the cabinet and a e'w of the diploma tic Corps.

It was a congenial crowd and we could not help noticing that most of them felt entirely at home iri our presence. Ine dinner was one 01 magnificience. Livered waiters an ticipated your slightest wish. A con cealed band played the swfeetest of music. The dining room itself is not nearly so gorgeous an affair as many would suppose.

The walls are decorated only by a few choice paintings. The furniture is plain thotigh of mahogany. The china of pure white. The linen of fine quality. The dinner was a ten course affair, and included the choicest of viands, fruits, and vegetables to be found in the marketr The president is alight eater and does not touch liquor of any kind at meals but we could not help but notice that he seemed pleased and flattered by our prompt disposal of any of it which came our way.

We made what we have since found a very bad break of etiquette, when we, following our usual custom, drank out of the bottle, but none" of the company present appeared to notice it. This showed that they were well bred and true gentlemen. After dinner we adjourn1 to the private room of the president, with our feet upon the private desk and one of Mac's 25c cigars doing business we discussed his Cuban policy, his financial policy and the tariff qusstion We agreed heartily with his opinion on all of the points. In fact we were in such a frame of mind, from our too ready acceptance of the invitation to "have something," that we were ready to agree to any old thing with the single' exception of a prohibition clause.
