Omaha Herald. They have the largest assortment of Building Material in the west, which they are selling Cheaper than the Cheapest. We aro sorry to learn that Billy Templetcn, sou of Nat. Tcmploton, wlio will bo remembered ns an old citizen of Republic county, met with a serious aceideut iu Montana while out hunting.

It seems that ho went on the mountains to hunt wild sheep. After ho had killed and dressed four he started down, when ho stepped cn a rock which gave way percipitating him several hundred feet down the side of the mountainj almost entirely takiug the skin from his body and breaking one leg just above the ankle. In this condition he was forced to crawi nearly four miles before he reached help. This must have been a trying ordeal to go through. It is a great wonder it did not kill him outright.

It is reported that his leg will have to be amputated to save his life, and then there is great dauger. The old soldiers foot race Wednesday was about as exciting as any fleature of the re-union. The first race, open to all old soldiers over 60, was run by B. Bcsse, N. G.

Martin, W. II. Perry, John Scofield aud C. Craine. The race was close at the start, but before the first two hundred yards was covered, Martin and one other, were some way ahead.

The race between these two to the finish was close but Martin, of Co. 3. Iowa, came under the wire a few lengths ahead and was declared the winner. The second race, open to all old soldiers between 50 and 60, was run by J. C.

Vance, W. Tempton, W. II. Thompson, .1. E.

McPherson and H. Hurlbert. This race was full as exciting as the first and like the first all but two droped far behind on the first quarter. The race was won by J. C.

Blaine's health will prevent him from resuming his official dutiesat Washington. Mr. Blaiue has been a big man, but it seems he has broken down meutaly and phisically. Belgium has a population of G.020, 0-13; Kansas has a population of 1,427, 09G, yet she is so large that seven countries the size of Belgium could be laid down within her border, and she would have 400,000 square rui'es of unoccupied territory. An exchange asks, "what is the difference between gold and paper money?" Simply this paper money is the fiat of our government and consequently rsaj money, while gold is simply property the same as other property, and fluctuates according to the supply and demand.

The Clay Center Critic says: "What is the difference between a Baptist sermon in a Baptist Church and a Baptist sermon out on the street corner? Just about the same difference there is between the republican and People's tickets. One lot have the offices and the other lot want them. Moral: Vote the democratic ticket." Weary and seeking rest, I know no choice 'twixt mother's arms And Mauma's ebon breast. What cared I that her skin was rough. And dusky brown of hue? For me this truth was quite enough The heart was warm and true. I grew a man, she old and gray. And missed me from her side; But many a day, and oft, thoy say.

Whitemarsh Seabrook in Youth's Companion. He Rents Kings. Apropos of the increase in the price of diamonds a man from New York a scheme calculated to help the impecunious young exquisite who wants to get engaged, but who lacks the necessary funds to purchase a suitable diamond pledge of his affection. This scheme is nothing more nor less than to loan engagement rings for so much per month. "It's just this," said Mr.

Solomon that is his name "a young man can't afford to buy a diamond ring. Very well, he doesn't need to do so. He conies to me. I take his note and lend him a splendid diamond ring at a reasonable rental. He gives it to his fiancee.

The marriage takes place in the course of time, and in a few months afterward the young man owns up and takes back the ring, upon which he has been paying rent, and gives it tc me. Risk? Oh, none at all. I have his note. The humiliation that would come from exposure should I seek the assistance of the law precludes the possibility of his defaulting. I have uot lost a ring yet, nor a dollar of rental.

The business has been a paying one." Chicago Post. In the county, AT BOTTOM PRICES. Coal in Ton Lots and over delivered free. WE INVITE EVERYBODY TO CALL AND EXAMINE OUR STOCK AND GET PRICES BEFORE BUYING; FOSTER LUMBER CO. BELLEVILLE.

KANSAS. The Republican papers are copying with gleeful commeuts au article from the Eldorado Republican reciting the sins of omission of the last legislature and charging them upon the Alliance people. This is unfair as the Alliance had control of only one body, the Republicans being in an overwhelming majority in the senate. Neither party is responsible wholly for faults of the last legislature. The Re-pudlican senate and Allirncc house got into a quarrel and would agree on nothing but the Republicans cannot refuse to take their share of the responsibility.

Standard. The Largest Stock and Lowest Prices on SOKAFIDE PUISES. The public have frequently been swindled by bogus offers of big prizes, premiums, made by publications and parties whose lack of responsibility was not found out until too late to prevent the swindle, even though the swindlers have sometimes been dealt with by the law before they could escape. We are glad to say, however, that when responsible and long established papers like the grand old Prairie Farmer, of Chicago, make prize offers they will invariable be carried out to the letter. Iu the issue of Oct 3, Tfit Prairie Farmer presents a most generous offer of $1,000 or more as prizes to all sending in subscriptions during October, November, December and January.

The prizes range dowm from 150, $75 50, 15, in gold, and are open to all competitors, and every one competing can get a valuable prize even forseudiDg only five subscriptions. The enterprise shown by our old and respected contemporary is commendable, and any one wanting a first-class, original agricultural home paper should send to The Prairie Farmer, Chicago, for a free sample copy and read their most liberal 1,000 prize offers. We will gladly publish the names of aDy in this vicinity who may win any of the prizes. A HARDWARE, "The overthrow of the present horrible system of tariff taxation is absolutely essential to the liberties of the people. Taxation of the laboring masses for the enrichment of protected and privileged few is a re-instatement of slavery in this country, more odious and abominable thsn African bondage when it existed.

This issue is to be fought out to the bitter end, and I have faith that sooner or later the people will triumph over the ruins of the plutocracy. There are other issues also which must take their place in the National Democratic Senator Voorhees. Dr. E. Klein, the bacteriologist oi London, states that he inoculated twe cows upon the shoulders with the diphtheritic virus. The inoculation was followed by the occurrence of vesicles and pustules upon their udders, and microbes were found in their milk. Two calves were inoculated with the matter taken from the vesicles and pustules, and similar eruptions were produced in them, followed by broncho-pneumonia and fatty kidneys such as occurred in the cows.

Two cats fed with the milk from the cows sickened with feline diphtheria, and this was followed by an epidemic among the cats kept foi experimental purposes in the laboratory. Fourteen sickened with it, some ol them dying. )r. J. Lewis Smith in Babyhood.
