From this little book we learn that since the first settlement in 1855. the increase in population, as compared with neighboring states ig in tbe ratio ot S10 per cent; she has a school fund valued at she has nearly 3,000 miles of railroad lines and nearly 5,000 rnili a of telegraph she raised in 1884, of corn 169,000,000, and of wheat 48.000,000, bushels; and ber live stock are valued at over $78,000,000, and tbous ands of intelligent and enterprising people are flocking to and finding rich and cheap homes among a genial and progressive people, witb all the social advantages of our older communities. It would not be fair to omit some mem-tion, in this connection of the exhibits of various kinds in the interest of tbe housekeeper, for she has br no means been forgotten by the inventor. There DIRECTORS: wish only to see them well filled, and honestly administered, do not share the despair of tbe professional office seeker. The new administration has a great work before it and it has four years for its acs complishment.

It has as yet been ia office not four week. A number of important offices have been filled with men against whom even their enemies can say nothing. Some superfluities have been removed and more extensive removals are being planned: Tbe morale of the service in all Government offices is remark- ably improved. For the first time in his long official life the Government clerk realizes that bis success and his future depends not upon the backing of a Blaine, a Mahonejor other powerful dispenser of patronage, but upon bis own work and conduct. I do not think there will be any ostentation of simplicity and plainness in the social enviionment ot tbe new administration, but it is evident that there will be less of mere display, and parade of wealth than lias existed In Washington since the war.

The gossips had talked and written much about the pew taken in the some, what artisiocrat church on New York Avenue, that a large number of snobs have been betrayed into renting pews at this church. The President not wishing to make a side show of his religion, has rented a pew in a church in a less fashionable part of the city and nearly a mile from the White House. He has not yet attended church but his sisters occupied their pew last Sunday. H. D.

Within this town at break of day, A colonel, through the morning gray, Was rushing up and down the street, And in his band a written sheet "Postofflce." His legs not lone; but rather thick, And still his step was wonderous quick He grasped your hand so free, so mild, And ever on his features smiled "Postofflce," He labored bard tbe page to fill With "Tom." and "Jim" and "Jack" and "Jill," But on the top was written plain, "Petition," and the other name "Postofflce." By Boon 'twas signed by many score; Tben fondly did be look it o'er, And as he rushed from door to. door, He shouted loader than before "Postofflce." He walked long after set of sun, Nor tben bis labors half were done And as be wended home bis way, Nor scarce three steps but be would say "Postofflce." Although 'twas getting dreadful late, His dear wife met him at tbe gate, And as be kissed away a tear He hiccoughed blandly in her ear "Postofflce." But on the next succeeding day Tbe very devil was to pay As now petitions by the score Were "merely this asd nothing more" "Postofflce Say, Cleveland, say I what shall be done, When these petitions by the ton Are rolling into Washington, All headed each and every one "PoBtofflce." 5 DR.

derive greater benefit fCra personal study of this exhibition, than the agricultural class. Probably as much as two-thirds of the machinery exhibit including implements, are directly devoted to the various operations of the farm, saying nothing oi the many useful helps for the boose-keeper and her work. There are great blocks of space occupied wholly with plows, cultivators, planters, reapers.tbreebers and farm mills, shellcrs, grinders and feed preparatory all more or less useful in the multiform laborers of the tarm. There is a recently patented polatoe planter, which takes the entire tuber, cuts tt into tollable sizes and plants eight acres per day, dropping and covering the "seeds, without any other aid than a horse and bis driver, and lis Inventor claims tbat it will more than repay its cost in one season's saving ot time and labor; and of corn and wheat machinery there is so much and such variety as would seem to almost make the labor of the husbandman a luxury instead of drudgery. In tbe patent office exhibit, taken in comparison with the more modern devices exhibited outside, nno can see the wonderful strides tbat have been made, not only in the Improved farm, but in all other classes of machinery.

There is seen the original model cf the reaping machine, quaint and odd In construction and appearance, but which finally revoN ntinnized wheat culture, and wltbont which it would seem impossible now to supply the world with bread. Here also all of course, cannot be made happy and Prohibition is its perpetual thought and it is considered wise and politic in tbe theme.
