At his home three miles southeast of Lane, on Sunday morning, May 1st, 188V. J. W. Wills, forty-one years, eight months and twenty days. At the breaking out of the war, comrade Wills, though a mere boy, was the first to respond to this country's signal of distress and take up arms in defense of its honor.

He enlisted in company 36 Indiana, volunteers August 23d 1861, but owing to a severe spell of sickness, was discharged July 1 9th 1802. After a few months rest and recuperation, he recovered bis health sufficiently and reinlisted iu the cavalry service, where he served faithfully aud fearlessly to the close of the conflict. He was actively engaged in scouting service, under Mc Cook, and it was while engaged in oue of those perrilous expeditions that he received the wounds which ultimately caused his death. He was wounded nine times and carried four of the death dealing missiles in his body to his grave, two of which were lodged in his right lung. Who can reflect for a moment upon his twenty two years of intense pain and suffering without a shudder, and who can place an estimate upon the price of liberty and freedom, purchased with the lives of tlousands of such men.

After the war was over he enlisted in the 43d U. S. August 13th, 1867, was recommended for promotion and discharged June 10th Ho was a member of Lew Wallace post G. A. R.

at Scandia, Republic Kansas. He met death-with the same heroic courage which had sustained him through nuny other fierce conflicts, and passod away triumphantly, under the banna of the Supreme Commander of the Universe. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Iller, at Spring Grove Church. W.
