Prof. M. L. Field, principal of one of the schools in Topeka, has been choss en conductor. Prof.

Field was principal in this city for two years 1899-91. Dr. W. G. Cheney, a dentist with more than a local reputation, late of McPherson, has located in town and is now ready for all work in his line.

He comes highly recommended and will no doubt build up a splendid praotice. For the present, he will have his office at the Stauffer House. Skinner, Ottawa. 536. One of the best the band ever accomplished, was to meet at the band room Tuesday, night and reorganise. The following officers were chosen to serve one year: Conductor, S. J.

Tapley, President, S. Ft. McConnell, Vice President. E. H.

Pearson, Secretary, Marv F. Getchell, Treasurer, J. R. Finley, Librarian, Dan Bogart. The new band will start with a membership of sixteen and will meet for tice every Tuesday evening.

Begin- ning in about two weeks, open-air concerts will be given in the band stand on Main street once a week. PETER GORBY. Peter Gorby has gone to his reward. A good old man; a man who always had a smile and a kind word for every body. lie professed Christianity, and surely lived up to it by his works, He was born in East Palestine, Ohio, July 3, 1823, almost seventy-eight years ago.

He joined the Methodist church at an early age. He was mars ried to Harriet Cordelia Oliver, 5, 1814, and five children were born to them of which two are dead; those who are still living are, Mrs Clark, Mrs Black and a son in Ohio. March 1846, he moved to Meigs county Ohio, and to Kansas in the fail of 1884 and has resided in this vicinity ever since. His wife and companion died in 1893 and was buried in the Caldwell cemevery south of Home wood. Saturday he complained of a chill and dled the day following about 11 o'clock, April 28.

The funeral was preached at the house, five miles north of town. Monday at noon by Rev. Horner and the body was placed side by side with that of his wife Monday afternoon. D.
